His steering input is so aggressive but he's so quick! For me, best driver of all time. McRae- Senna in my opinion. Different disciplines I know but still.
dump valve, bleed valve, blow off valve, they are all the same. used in the section of piping between the turbo and the throttle body to relieve pressure at a certain psi so to not damage anything from the pressure of the turbine.R.I.P. McRae... greatest rally driver ever.
I have to watch the parts where he tells you exaclty what he does, like the hairpin for example, about 5 or 6 times to take it all in, because he does it so bloody quickly and smoothly.
It's always so sad to see him still alive and well and then be reminded that he's no longer with us. I truly miss him so much. For me he was the best and my favourite rally driver of all-time. Miss you Colin! He's now racing on the roads of heaven. R.I.P
its the anti-lag and an external waste gate, dump valves and blow off valves are only used on boy racer cars! the anti-lag is when you retard the engine leaving the exhaust valves open allowing fuel to pass through and to be ignited to keep the turbo boost! this system is only used aggressively in rallying. the reason you can change gear with out the clutch is there is an sequential gearbox that does not use synchro's they use dog's which means you dont have to use the clutch
@Wast3m anti-lag system, involves igniting fuel in the exhaust off throttle to spool up the turbo ready for when the driver applies the throttle - instant power
@Wast3m It's Blow Out Valve - releases air pressure from the turbo system, to not to blow the turbo, because if pressure is high and you won't release it the turbo can spin backwards and cause it's destruction
@Wast3m Can't tell you what it is I'm afraid, sounds like something external picked up by the microphone as it is clearly an old recording system being used. But then again, I could be wrong. It is not, however, the turbocharger. The only noises commonly assosiated with that are the whine of additional air being sucked in and subsequently spinning the internal turbine, or a hiss as excessive pressure is dumped at the point of gear changing (made commercially famous in the Fast and Furious).
@Wast3m Dump valve from the turbocharger. When you quickly let off the throttle, after heavy throttle, the throttle body (butterfly valve) closes against full boost. This happens because the inertia in the turbines keeps them spinning, producing boost, but when you don't need it. If you don't get rid of it, (with a dump valve), this can cause damage to the throttle body, turbocharger, and engine, going back into throttle with a lean mixture causing detonation.
@Wast3m thats the bov (blow off valve) which releases the boost from the turbo allowing it to spool up to full boost instead of waiting for the rpms to drop. it will activate every time you let off the gas
@Wast3m its the waste gate from the turbo when he is feathering the throttle to control the cars grip through the corner. i just love how colin is driving at 60-80mph off road having a calm chat whilst driving . brilliant...
@Wast3m That is the sound of the wastegate air intake between engine and turbocharger. Too much pressure from turbocharger is wasted not to break the engine.
@Wast3m yeah the "chirping noise was either the bov letting off the unused built up pressure in the engine as he was fluttering the throttle, or it's him hitting the rev limiter in whatever gear he was in which case the bov is letting off pressure as well in the engine, because it's reached it's maximum limit and has to let it out, rev limiters are a must in turbo charged cars and there's a certain part you can buy to make it chirp like that..i forget the name though
@Wast3m PawelPilarczyk is right, it's got to do with the turbocharger. If the air is compressed by the charger and suddenly the driver chooses to close the throttle (get off the gas pedal) the pressure in front of the throttle becomes very high and would slow down the turbo charger (spinning) or even damage it. Thus they installed a blow off valve (BOV) to release the pressure when not needed.
@Wast3m It's actually the sound of the turbo exhaust valve when the pressure exceeds required for this valve releases and makes that sound, the Impreza subarus were masters of this unique sound
