hey i'm gonna buy a flemish giant teusday and my question is can i let him play in my backyard without him walking away sorry fot the bad english is speak it better than i typ it :P:P greetings from holland :)
@pullmol17 I wouldn't let him play in such an open space until he's more trained. You'll want some kind of barrier / fence, even if he's a baby. Sequoia could come when I called her, but it took a few weeks just for her to get used to me. Moving to a new home is kind of traumatic for animals, so do everything in small steps.
Start by giving him a tiny play place outside then make it bigger and bigger.
Doesn't she chew your furnature if you let her run free all over the apartment for the entire day? Or do you put her in an enclosure at night? I've thought about a flemish giant for a while and I know they really are too big to house in a cage and it just seems wrong but I've had a really big holland lop before and she grew to a size where it just seemed wrong to keep her caged and she seemed to keep nibbling on the furniture. Do you just give her chews and she stays away from it or...?
@fantabulousK She passed away, but when I had her the only furniture she chewed was a table leg. In one apartment she liked the baseboard around 1 wall's corner, but I got a lemon spray or something to hinder her destruction (it wasn't that bad, but had noticeable bite marks). She had other things to chew (an open phone book, wooden toys)
She was litter trained, but when i wasn't home, or at night, I kept her contained in a wire-free, baby gated room. When I was home and awake she was free.
@MrDanielj123 You'll have to find a breeder (not just a pet store). Google "Flemish Giant Breeder California." Should be anywhere from $75-150. Sometimes it's cheaper if you want a pet and more if you want a show rabbit. :)
Wonderful little clip of your bunny! I think if you added more of those nifty rythmic timing clips using other pieces of footage, this would make it better :D! Love it! So cute!!
heya =D i have a giant chinchilla mix =) im planning to get myself a baby FG (female) as well but not anytime soon, hee.. im studying abroad in malaysia, so id prolly get one a few months before i grad. i seriously thought my TuTu was an epically stubborn and a failure but it turns out i was wrong. he became a funtastic pet! xx
Just contact the breeder. You can run an Internet search for breeders in your area. Sometimes they are sold at county fairs and the like, but it's better to go to the farm and see the conditions they were raised under. Depending on where you live, you can get a Flemish Giant from champion blood lines for as little as $75.
Thank you for a wonderful video. We just lost our beautiful Flemish female last night, and this helps remind me of how lovely she was before she became ill.
@katalyst94 She's a Flemish Giant and she cost me $75. The breeder I used ranged from $75-100. Because I wanted a pet, not a show rabbit, she was cheaper.
Omg if I could afford to feed that big adorable ball of fluff I would get a Flemish giant in a heart beat! but I can't so I'll just settle for my two dwarfs :) gorgeous rabbit with her puffy chest, So cute!
A male will spray to mark territory, you can't train him out of that, neutering him would be the best bet to get him to use a litterbox...I've had 9 rabbits, none use the litterbox 100%. It depends on the rabbit, you can get some good ones to use it about 90%. Using 2 litterboxes where you notice he goes regularly is a good way to start, eliminate the one he doesn't use. It can take quite a while to get them adjusted. People have to remember they are not like cats.
@cari911 Technically, it's called a Dewlap. and it is where the milk is formed. Then when (If) the rabbit has babies, the millk formed in the dewlap goes to the nipples and the babies can drink from them. But, yes, the large dewlap only appears on females (I know this because my grandma is a Flemish Giant Breeder) :-)
Rabbits are so awesome. I've alwaysed loved the big breeds and want a flemish giant very badly. Heck. They can beat up a cat if they wanted. Probably eat your dog too.
Sequoia is a beautiful flemish giant. I have a Califorian mix male and a Netherland dwarf amle. My next rabbit is going to be a Giant Flemish. Is Sequoia litter box trained by chance? I have both of mine trained and it makes a world of a difference in keeping them inside the house during the cold winter months here in MI. Keep making more videos of you baby. I really enjoyed viewing this video of yours. Thanks and many Thanks to your Sequoia as well :o)

This is a really great video, it has been put together lovely, its very imaginative. As for your big Bun hes absolutly gorgeous, lovely big ears!! *^__^*
I also have a Flemish Giant (Stanley) but he is steel grey, we used to have him in a hutch, but for the last 5 months we brought him into the house over the winter and he has since been a house rabbit. I would never put him back outside now! He follows me around sits on the sofa with me for cuddles. Litter training them is time consuming and he often has a little accident, but it's so worth it.
Yes! You really have to watch him, we have a big dog cage that he goes in at night and when we are at work in the day. But as soon as we are at home he bounds around the house. He has chewed through a lamp lead and an ipod charger too! We get him wooden toys to chew on, but they do like to chew the furniture. You just have to keep a watchful eye on them.
Was it hard to litter box train her? I just got a 3 week old baby Flemish Giant and was just wondering how long you think it would take to train him--and also could you maybe give me some tips on how to train mine? I'll put some videos of him up, soon. He is so sweet. I just got him yesterday and within hours he was being a little nuzler!!! Aww.
She's more like a cat than a dog. She is litter trained. Sometimes she wants to be social and hang out, or sit by me and get pet. Other times she wants to go lie down behind the futon out of sight for a couple hours. She can do a couple tricks, though.
She is adorable! I've been thinking about getting a Flemish Giant. Does Sequoia usually live in a cage or just roam around your house? I probably wouldn't be able to get a cage...
She has a cage (which is actually a large dog crate), and her litter box is in her cage, which is in the kitchen. The kitchen is babygated off and she can roam around the kitchen freely. When I'm home she can roam around the whole apartment. But I put her in the kitchen at night (she actually comes when I call, so it's not hard to get her back in there). Even when she is allowed around the apartment, I think she likes having a space that is hers.
That is pretty much the same set-up we have. Sometime you let Stanley roam around the house and he prefers to go and chill out in his little home watching the world go by!
Wow! I have a Holland Lop and gave her free reign over the house, and she chewed everything. How about Sequoia? Loved the vid, great editting, what software do you use?
Downy, my Holland Lop likes to chew on chair legs, moldings and the corners of walls. Nothing deters her. But my girlfriend makes her toys with toilet paper tubes that she folds over and hides a treat inside. That keeps her occupied a bit :)
Something you can do that'll make it so you can let your bunny have free reign over your house, and not worry about her distroying your chair legs is to wrap them in bubble wrap, and if wires are a worry you can case them in aquarium tubing to make them safter. :).
hey thank you for the tip i will post a video soon :)

Do all female bunnies have a dewlap, or just certain breeds? I had a female Polish rabbit when I was a kid, and I don't remember her having one...
Honeydew7396 1 year ago
@Honeydew7396 Males & females get them. Especially after neutering. It can be a sign of over feeding, but not always.
