I got a 2001, I bought it 20K miles (2002), Car was in a rental fleet . It was a year old. looked like knew and drove like a champ. I've put close to 140K on it. Engine is wonderful for the mileage. Mengia is right about the engine in many ways. Bullet proof, but darn you also need to fix the stupid little stuff. You get up in miles be prepared to use your hands. Toyota owners, hold on but are not willing to do the work.
@cody111495 one of the best/most reliable V6 engines out there.. These cars deliver significant power and are fun to drive. They have earned the name four-door-sports-car and at the same time giving that luxury ambiance (if you get leather seats).. considering the age of the car.. if you are looking for a 4th gen or 5th gen maxima i would highly recomend an auto-transmission for durability and reliability.. mine has 265000km and still feels brandnew!
yo, my max is very slugish,it's like i step on the gas and it takes a while to build up, and by around55-60mph,rpm at 3500 and it stalls, like i'm not steppin on the gas,but then it works again, also there is a rotten egg smell from exhaust when revin, wat u guys think, i changed my plugs and pour some gas cleaner in the tank, wat u guys suggest?
I replaced both... one of the rear 02 censors (after cat) was replaced at Nissan, who then told me it was the MAF causing acceleration problems too. So, I bought the MAF on e-bay and had it installed - both made a difference, so I would replace the O2 censor first and see how it goes. Good luck Dude...
Buy the MAF on ebay - I bought mine for $130 Canadian... the dealer was quoting me $600 for the part, plus labour to install and re-program. Along with a new O2 sensor, it drives like a brand new car!!
I have A 2001 Maxima and I have that "Check Engine Soon" light on. I got the diagnostics done on it and found that it was the O2 sensor that was faulty. I am experiencing lack of power upon acceleration. It's difficult to even get to 30 mph. Do you think this is just an O2 sensor problem or is it the MAF mass airflow sensor. Please Help. Thanx
my mom had this problem in her 2000 nissan maxima, me and my dad brought it over to our nissan dealer and they fixed the problem, but i know what you mean... this problem is such a bitch my mom couldnt even get the car over 25 mph, i had trouble shifting and it was stubborn when it tried to pick up speed... like i said she could barely get the car over 25 mph... sooo in the long run it was something that had to do with the engine and the bill was like $2500, but its worth it alot, trust me!!
the element that actually registers the air is sensitive and some cleaners leave a residue. your best bet is to order a new one off the internet... i got mine for like 107.00 with shipping brand new and its nismo. it only took like 20 minutes to put in.
There are several cleaners out there that work and dont leave residue, including CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner, sold at most Autozones or other autoparts stores.
This guy doesnt have a clue to what he's talkin about.
Why spend 107 bucks when you can atleast spend $5 bucks on a can of CRC and try to see if that works first...
Do you know how a MAF works? The resistance of the conductor (element you refer to) changes as the temperature changes, causing more or less current to flow through the wire. It is cooled by intake air. More airflow, more cooling, higher current, higher voltage output to pcm. Understand?
Much better. BTW thanks for the vid cuz I think I've been having some MAF probs lately. The video helps so that I can see where it should be at. I plan on cleaning my air filter and then maybe the MAF to see if it fixes anything.

@tumbacholas
What kind of gearing is that? 10mph from another gear is unlikely. It's more likely 2nd takes you to ~65.

@hjjfffaa you are thinking of the 5 speed

Sounds like its your master airflow sensor. its located on your transmission. my aunt had the same problem with her 00 max.. hope this help

my mom had the same problem, its your mas air flow sensor... and some other thing, in the long run it costed us $2500 buckd to get it fixed

if your Check engine is on, you need a scantool. Then it's easier to make a good diagnosis with a DTC 'P' code

When you put in your MAF, did you take it to the dealership to have the computer reprogrammed? I have heard mixed opinions on this.
