This song Ms Phylis sang from her hear! She was torn apart looking for true love. All of her Music told a story that she had experienced. She expressed her self thru her music! She was a great singer! She was loved by a lot of people, if only she realized it, we would still be blessed with her live singing!
The song is o.k. It says much. But I don't care if she sang about toilet paper, I'd still listen. However, 2:40 in this video. Nobody on earth could pull that off. NOBODY.
1 of the greatest to ever hit a note. A rare jewel she'll always be remembered. Anthony Bean Theatre - ABT in New Orleans did a great reenactment of her life a couple of years ago..
the night she died my husband was afraid to tell me. he knew she was my hero. she did her own thing with all the talent which came so deep within her. never getting the applause in which she so much deserved. i dont think there will ever be another singer who sang so much heart break and meant it. a true inspiration to all singers who will not give in to the marketing deal. one of lifes best singers of all time. God bless her and her true heart.
Upon hearing about the loss of Vesta Williams I immediately felt like hearing Phyllis sing. They were both so talented and deserved much more recognition
i hope they do a movie about Phyllis life story,They should get Keke Wyatt to play her because they have a sriking resemblence, and they both have beautiful voices.
Personally I would love to see Ms Hyman's Biography made into a movie. However, I don't think they should get a current singer to play the lead. They need a real actress with beauty and grace to play the lead. For the vocals they should use Ms Hyman's Voice only. NO ONE and I do mean NO ONE can do her voice justice. But that is just my opinion.
@kendra3136 I know exactly what you mean. I moved from Seattle to be with my mate and this has been the most miserable 4 months of my life. So i have decide to move on.
i LOVE THIS WOMAN! I WAS ONLY 14 WHEN SHE LEFT US AND I WAS CRUSHED...i CRIED FOR THAT WHOLE DAY.....SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN..I PRAY YOU HAVE FOUND PEACE QUEEN
Omg Phyliss, every time I hear this song it gives me chills for real. Her voice is so powerful and touching the way she expresses her self. Mann she loved for real and so deep.
The only thing left of her is her beautiful voice. She was physically attractive but she looks so sad. I hate it. She looks like life beat her witta aluminum bat. I wish I coulda helped her. Such a sad story that coulda been so great.
I identify this song with a love i once knew and that's a shame he can't come back no more he look bad know that's a shame he wanted a drug addict and he got just what he deserved drugs he didn't want to be with me.
Such a shame this talented and beautiful lady cried out and it seems as if noone heard her pleas for help. We are a much sadder society for losing this talent at such an early age. God bless you Phyllis, RIP and i am so glad I have discovered her music.
she was so talented , but she had some serious issues, i watched a show on her called UNSONG , Clive Davies didnt know how to market her, he wanted her to sound more Pop, but when whitney got signed she was dropped from the record label, which already had , Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, and Whitney houston, they told her to find some other record label..RIP Phyliss

I had been thinking about Phyllis lately and that's why I am on youtube now. Looking at all the comments, I that she is still missed a lot by her fans. When heard on the radio many years ago that she had died, I was completely devastated. She is what we call a "Once in a blue moon singer." So far, to my knowledge, I have not heard anyone sing like Phyllis Hyman. IMO, the closest would probably be Mesa Leak of Incognito. Other than that, I don't know. LOL to all my Phyllis Hyman Fans.
OMG that tear at 1:53....i'm done..Gosh this video is sooo her life..and sooo sad..she was one of the best and It breaks my heart that she died of a broken heart (affiliated with her illness) so sad smh..i miss her so much she was gorgeous and talented..I will look for her in heaven to sing with :)!
@ thegangstabitch88 she did not kill herself over Clive. She was just a victim of the chronic disease Bi-polar Depression. In her last days on this earth she didnt even realize who she was anymore more or less thinking about Clive Davis. BiPolar Depression is a very misunderstood Disease. And so many people are So ill informed that people are walking around with it and dont even realize it.
@ brownboykd So true of what you've stated. But there was another issue in which Ms. Phyllis dealt with which was the 'source' of her depression...she is a beautiful person besides...
I grew up listening to Phyllis via my mom. Its weird hearing the songs now because I actually understand the meaning and how she felt because i've lived through some of this craziness!! R.I.P. Phyllis I love u!!

Phyllis Hyman had a voice that would put you in another time and place. I saw her in concert in Richmond, VA and it was a wonderful event. Miss her talent alot. RIP
Phyllis was soooooo deep and spiritual. A lot of people have a habit of calling her "sick" as if she wasn't right in the head... she was tuned in at a higher frequency and had a lot of knowledge and deep understanding of things beyond "normal" people's comprehension. She was misunderstood which pained her greatly, She was a loving person who needed some 1 who could love her unconditionally and understand her feelings. I know that she is in a much happier place feeling much love. Luv Phyllis!
I love the music of Phyllis Hyman. This is an awesome song and she performs it unbelievably. She signifies a true singer. One who can make any song truly theirs. Not many artist ,especially of today ,can make that claim. Those of us who appreciate Phyllis' music are blessed that she happened our way musically.

Yes when I looked back at my childhood in the inner city it helps me now that I know these things because I used to always wonder why certain kids had certain types of behavoir. We can only imagine how many Children in the inner cities may have had some type of disorder of some sorts ,only to go by undiagnosed .We still need healing!
@landy321961 she talked about her life in all her songs dear. she needed help that only God and a phychiatrist could give her. she is gone but never forgotten. i miss her as well. LOVE YOU Phyllis.
this is one of them nights when you get a bottle of merlot, and a bubble bath, with candles lit, and mopping around the house over a hard breakup... i've witness my mama before she got married!lol
Oh how I can very much relate to this song in so many ways. Phyllis really put her heart into this song just as she does in all of her songs. Phyllis you really hit home in a personal kind of a way and I love it. God bless you Phyllis. irvinbean123
Brother this is a beautiful video, the comments are a bit sad, especially coming from our people. In today's world kids are raised in dysfunctional families were drugs and alcohol are abused. It's hard to believe that some even suffer physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hand's of their parents. With little if any spiritual teaching's it's sad to see that some of these children are hurting so much that they would take their own life. Man do we need God more that ever. God's Love to all.
There's alot of focus on phyllis and men, or lack of a man. but most are forgeting her stuggle with being bipolar or manic depressive illness, the disease of emotional highs and lows, We forget this is a Stong illness and wont just go away,Many cover it up with drugs, alcohol, food, many lovers,no lovers
Actress jennifer lewis talks about her battle with this disease meds has helped her.
Depression is serious in the african american community We need to talk about it
@brownboykb U're absolutely right! With all of the struggles, disappointments & setbacks we've endured, as blacks, it should b no surprise that many blacks suffer from depression & other forms of mental illness. I look forward to the day when we can b honest about our feelings.
Sometimes we speak thing within in our lives not knowing it, she sung how/what she felt. She was a very emotional singer, but weak N her soul. She put too much trust in man & often got hurt behind relationships, if only she had put that same trust N God, this woman would still B singing & moving upon D hearts of many. My heart goes out to her family, they are the ones left with hurtful memories you and I never will know. Fame never surpasses happiness, it only mask it...
I'm glad you picked your name as it's phrased, you judgemental SOB! One of Jesus' disciples committed suicide, you friggin pharisee...so check your stees before you go judging an artist who is more of a real person than your fake ass!
I don't know about anybody else, but I can hear the pain in her voice, the sense of hopelessness. I hate so badly that she killed herself. I thank God for my relationship with him. Nothing is ever completely hopeless if you have Jesus on your side.
Thank you for posting this video I had been looking for it for so long. Another icon lost to tragedy. She was so beautiful, young and so underrated. Her vocals were phenomenal.
KeKe Wyatt sort of favors her in looks not in voacals although she is a great sanger as well. Just never know what someone is going through. Her eyes in her later career just look so sad but she always sung with compassion. You literally could feel what she was sanging about.
kuntroversy's right...seeing her cry is hard to watch...I felt my throat tighten bc it's so real...she didn't just sing lyrics, she gave you the very lining of her heart...
It was New Year's Day of 2004 when I heard "This Too Shall Pass" for the first time. When my 'godmom' informed me who Phyllis was and that she killed herself, I was SO SAD. I was so shocked. I wish I could have known her, and I would write a whole album to encourage her to keep on keeping on!
thank you so much for posting this video! it's one of my favorites, even though it's sad--like the majority of Ms. Hyman's songs. I'm always moved by this video because you can actually see her cry (1:57) and I have no doubt that those tears were real. She's long gone but I hope that wherever she is she has some sense of peace and happiness. (btw, you have awesome taste in music)
From 1991-92... Phyllis enjoyed HUGE success... with this track, Don't wanna change the world, and when you get right down to it. and, she does go deep into relationship drama here in the video.
It's true, I believe that was actually the peak of her career, and she didn't even get to ride it out. "Don't Wanna Change the World" could've broken her into a whole new generation and she could've extended into hip-hop and house music from there. What a shame... Speaking of shameful things, I always hated how heavily they edited this song for video and radio play.
This song Ms Phylis sang from her hear! She was torn apart looking for true love. All of her Music told a story that she had experienced. She expressed her self thru her music! She was a great singer! She was loved by a lot of people, if only she realized it, we would still be blessed with her live singing!

Depression is serious in the african american community We need to talk about it
thanks

@brownboykb U're absolutely right! With all of the struggles, disappointments & setbacks we've endured, as blacks, it should b no surprise that many blacks suffer from depression & other forms of mental illness. I look forward to the day when we can b honest about our feelings.

@brownboykb thanks for that comment. I deal with those issues a lot on my page. stop by sometimes.
I'm glad to know that you love Phyllis as do I.

MEN RUN WOMEN TO WOMEN SOMETIMES, SAD.

RIP Phyliss! You are missed much.

you guys really need to read her biography. it'll go deeper into her life and how she felt she wasn't as successful as she should have been

kuntroversy's right...seeing her cry is hard to watch...I felt my throat tighten bc it's so real...she didn't just sing lyrics, she gave you the very lining of her heart...

BMWman79 4 years ago
It's true, I believe that was actually the peak of her career, and she didn't even get to ride it out. "Don't Wanna Change the World" could've broken her into a whole new generation and she could've extended into hip-hop and house music from there. What a shame... Speaking of shameful things, I always hated how heavily they edited this song for video and radio play.
