1885年美國喬治亞州的約翰·彭伯頓藥劑師John Stith Pemberton原先發明的飲料配方，稱為Pemberton­'s French Wine Coca，當時的配方含有古柯鹼和酒精。當喬治亞州的亞特蘭大和­富爾敦縣（Fulton County）發出禁酒令，因此潘伯頓發明可口可樂，無酒精版的­Pemberton's French Wine Coca。

1886年，可口可樂在亞特蘭大的藥房首賣,第一份可口可樂售價­為五分美元。可口可樂原作為藥物出售。開張的第壹年，可口可樂公­司僅售出了400瓶可口可樂。

1887年，潘伯頓將一部分股權賣給艾薩凱德勒（Asa Candler），其後，艾薩凱德勒成立Coca Cola Corporation。
