My eyes get teary watching Clarence's solo. I am so happy and feel blessed I actually got to see him live once in my life. His death made me realize that you need to do all those things you want to do asap. Things change.
i love the dynamics of this song, great harmonica, great guitar solo, great sax solo, great lyrics, one of the greatest songs of all time, in my opinion
am struck by the pure joy of the video, the great sax break, where Springsteen and the Big Man are united, a moment of brotherhood and love. Beautiful and moving.
In the summer of 1985, my friends and I lined up for tickets, for what we thought would be a couple of nights. 7 nights later, we had our front row seats, for a stadium show before 60,000 people. I was singing my heart out, along with Bruce. At the end of Promised Land, Bruce looks me straight in the eyes and tosses his harmonica right into my hands. It was a glorious night. RIP Big Man... it will never be the same.
Thanks for the magic, Clarence. Wish I could say how much you and Bruce meant to me all these years, but in a real way you have become part of my life. We're pulling for you, my friend. God Bless.
Never has a more pure friendship between a Black and White man existed. Racism means jack shit when you see these two gentlemen share what they do on stage.
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!
Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!
Man, when Bruce is watching Clarence playing it just hit me how much these guys must love each other, they aren't just "good friends" they are a family. Its a relationship that few will ever experience and being 18 its one i definiltey haven't. It's just unreal to think they have been doing this for more than double the time i have been on this planet. Incredible.
Thanks for this video! This is one of my favorite Boss songs, the music and lyrics just combining together for perfection. The performance capture here is Bruce at his best. Aces all around.
This song examines how business deals are going away from the old-school "hand shake" deal because no one's word is good anymore. Bruce believes that land can be promised in a deal, however, current business trends do not suggest such.
IMO it was downhill for Bruce artistically speaking after this LP, but what an achievement. You have to be good to call a song The Promised Land and get away with it. I reckon it's the equal of Chuck Berry's which I always thought summed up everything there was to say about rock & roll. This live performance is outstanding.
@Gatsby999888 I should have realised that on YouTube nobody is ever allowed to say anything other than the artist they are commenting on is the saviour of the human race or some such bollocks. You say I can't form a sentence? It sems to me that you can't read one.
I remember the first time I heard this song I was in 10th grade and it changed my life. I remember where I was when I heard it. At that point I knew this life had hope and with dreams anything was possible. Now 32 years later, life has had its ups and downs but this song always gets me through it....every single time!!
Not too many bands or performers could've taken on Bruce at this point.I'm into all sorts of music and for the last 20 years I reckon I've seen some cracking performers.Bruce's performances and many of his songs are just so much deeper and he's proven recently he can still pen a damn good song.
Hey johnnymarlboro! Ok, you're blinded by your own ideology but leave Bruce alone. He's been for regular people all his life. If it doesn't haunt you that POOR AMERICANS ARE DIEING so that DICK CHENEY and his pals at Halliburton make extra money is your problem (and those who are doing the dieing). Bruce has spent his whole life trying open the eyes of America's blue collar folks (and keep them open). In contrast the GOP sends them through a meat-grinder for rich peoples' gains
i dont doubt that halliburton has abused its standing in the government. I dont doubt americans are being sacrificed needlessly for stupid wars. what i do object to, is your NOT seeing bruce's talk of blue collar welfare and his vapid disregard FOR IT. Even if you hate Walmart, (a godsend for us making less than 40$K a year) they released the Boss's greatest hits. However Bruce battled against Walmart selling his hits for a good and decent price. You politics are tragic and wrong mr. dkriz.

you're all too young to appreciate the sincerity of this music. bruce is a big government type guy, wanting more taxes, less freedom etc. however, his music speaks to the little man. you have to be older to truly appreciate this music. you have to have bad economy, unemployed, be of at least drinking age, depressed, jaded...w/e. then you'll know the sincerity of these lyrics and music. just know that bruce doenst believe a word of what he says. even though he may be a god of music.
@johnnymarlboro Jeez, you must be a talented psychic to know Springsteen's heart and mind so thoroughly. It would actually be quite impossible to write so many absolutely brilliant songs about the human condition if he didn't have deep insight into it. And, btw, he deserves every dime he's ever made for bringing joy, and a voice, to millions.
I was about your age when i started to realise that bruce springsteen is the best of the best! You cant find anyone like him these days! A living legend! Im 16 btw:)
He makes me wish I was born 30 years earlier. I've been listening to him for as long as I can remember, and he and Clarence Clemons are a big part of why I became a musician. Go Bruce and the E Street Band!!
I love Bruce Springsteen. How much? I still love him when he goes from ridiculous guitar solo into a saxophone solo. That is how much I love the Boss.

This is my favorite song of all time... It is a shame that bruce doesnt write stuff like this anymore...from the darness album also my favorte. I am crushed that he is ridding on his reputation... I have bought all his albums since the 1970's and except for born to run, greetings, and a few others I am disapointed.
wow they played it must faster back in their younger years. I cant tell if I like their current slower performance or this souped up up-tempo version... both so good!
I don't think this is sped up, the intro is slowed down a lot, but the piano might seemed rushed in this version but I don't think the vocals are...both are great though
threebboyz: I've been to Bruce shows since '78. The tempos today are definitely slowed down. Promised Land, Prove it all Night, etc.use to blow the roof off the building....today, they're still great songs, they just don't have the same Earth shattering effect. I equate it to say, Mickey Mantle hitting homers in his prime that went WAY OUTTA HERE, when he got older, he still hit them, they just didn't go as far.......I'll be at 2 of the 4 shows for the Spectrums last hurrah in October.
lol....very true. Don't feel bad, some ppl never see the light....lol....I'm 48, and first saw him in '78 in Philly at age17, and I've made damn sure my kids knew who he was growin up. Now my son is 19, and my daughter is 16.They both have an appreciation for how great he was / is. That was their first concert they saw in '03. I'm taking them to one of the shows in October...it really doesn't get any better than Bruce live......depressing thing is that E St. is nearing the end of a great career.
I hope they can play until Bruce is about 70. After that I look forward to him playing with a Martin guitar, maybe piano, with Patti backing up the vocals.
yeah this is it,this is what i was looking for,the best version of this song, what this band did on the '78 tour is phenomenal,i'm not talking about the four hour shows but how good they sound.
It's ok if you don't like him. But, to those of use that do, his juice is as great as ever before. Your critiscism runs off his back like water off a duck's.
He does not write political songs. He never did. His occasional comment songs are really love songs and about things past.
PS: When he speaks politically, he makes reasoned arguments. Not half cocked comments like YOU and most politicians.
See a show. He is older now. His sense of political responsibility is admiral. Also, the rockcorporation nonsense is just that. What would you expect? Should he still be playing JUST the Jersey shore bars? He worked hard making beautiful music that now the whole world can watch him do LIVE.
Get off your high horse and join the real world. Bruce did it a long time ago.
You ever see him back in '78 when he had "THE JUICE"? If so, I'll give you props only for seeing him then, not for your comments. Why? Because he's NEVER lost the juice! If you don't believe me, see him on this tour (if you can afford it)!
In fact, if he can use a bit of juice to reach out to people today to make this country (I assume it's your's too) a better place; then don't belittle the man for either his wealth or his politics, he's earned both the money & the right to speak out...
I saw him from 78 to 84 and then gave up once he went mainstream. I listened 2 him 4 his music not because he wants 2 make the country a better place or his politics - thats bullshit he thinks he has a right to say because his pockets r full - if he really cared about that stuff he wouldve been yapping about it back in 72 when he started. He hasn't had a decent song since 87's Tunnel of Love/Brilliant Disguise - although the Wrestler was a hint of his past brilliance
No, its a fixed system run by criminals, different degrees of criminals, and the head criminals, the bankers who are the puppet master of our whore politicians would never let a man of the people, ralph nader, ron paul, or cynthina mckinney in the race, i would never expect that, its a fixed corrupt system that is so sick and decaying the whole shit is falling apart now ....for a new bright tomorrow if Bruce, former man of the peeps, had any vision he'd be writing songs about that
Outside of the Wrestler, Sts of Philly, he hasn't had anything since 87's tunnel of love...sadly Bruce NEEDS to be out there even if its shilling crap

The double harmonica intro sets a great opening tone to this insightful ballad.
I Done my best to live the right way, I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I want to explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart

It's ok if you don't like him. But, to those of use that do, his juice is as great as ever before. Your critiscism runs off his back like water off a duck's.
He does not write political songs. He never did. His occasional comment songs are really love songs and about things past.
PS: When he speaks politically, he makes reasoned arguments. Not half cocked comments like YOU and most politicians.

This was when Bruce had THE JUICE!
Not the rich politic spewing full of himself rockcorporation he unfortunately is now.
2JOHNNYT 2 years ago

He hasn't had a decent song since 87's Tunnel of Love/Brilliant Disguise - although the Wrestler was a hint of his past brilliance

you must have been pissed when ron paul didn't get the party nomination

No, its a fixed system run by criminals, different degrees of criminals, and the head criminals, the bankers who are the puppet master of our whore politicians would never let a man of the people, ralph nader, ron paul, or cynthina mckinney in the race, i would never expect that, its a fixed corrupt system that is so sick and decaying the whole shit is falling apart now ....for a new bright tomorrow if Bruce, former man of the peeps, had any vision he'd be writing songs about that

Swallow your BIG MAC, fold your KMART clothes, dust your WALMART furniture, then climb into your IKEA bed, watch some NBC and then go to sleep your brain dead sheep.
