If you pretend this is a beta, it might make you feel better. EYE seems like it could be this immensely epic game...after about 10 years of patches.
Also, the so-called "adaptive" and super awesome AI is bullshit. I'm hiding inside a building and somehow guys who are about 1000 yards away run straight to me en masse before I've even fired a single shot...on level 1. I guess if that's how you define "adaptive" uh...okay.
At the very least it can be said that the developers weren't afraid to experiment. It didn't all work out, but considering how good this game actually turned out despite some bizarre design choices, I have to say, it's still kind of an accomplishment. Ultimately, it can be very fun to play and that's what it all boils down to anyway.
This game tears me apart in some ways. I want this game to be as polished as Deus Ex or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and yet, I know if it were made by a bigger studio, it would lose some of it's charm in the process.
If I could somehow transfer this game's multiple sprawling maps, weapons, player character designs, and co-op play into Dues Ex: HR, I would. Hell, I've even fallen in love with EYE's strange leveling up system over HR. But it's a dream that will never come true.
@MrCuckingFrazy Haha, I posted this on the Steam forums yesterday because of the sale and gained roughly 2,500 views. You're definitely not the only one.
Only thing left unmentioned is how terrible multiplayer is, trying to play as a client is awful at the moment, hope it'll be fixed as I love so much about this game.
that's the kind of review I always wanted to hear regarding unique low-budget games :)
I think the devs didn't had enough people for all the roles, it's highly probable the writing was done by the art guy and only revised by the programmer (that's why they went for the cheap wall of text storytelling) and didn't really had a leader (someone must have pushed the werewolves thing and no one felt like axing it), and didn't had time for reworking the learning curve (QA being done by e-friends)
@lneh dude... "visceral" is not bullshit marketing lingo. You're confusing it with real buzz words like "real-time adaptive AI" or any number of other terms made by developers and publicists to sell games. Give the reviewer a break.
@lneh 'Visceral' is a very normal word that can be used to describe basically any experience. It's not bullshit marketing lingo, it's a perfectly correct way of describing things.
I agree it had many unpolished features, although personally I managed to adopt to this game's style farely well, but that's just me. I understand if it's harder for other people to get into.
@Ilumeo I speak a bit more fluidly and highly than I do in my videos. I mainly go monotone so I don't mess up too much when recording, but it's not too far from the voice that I normally use for speaking.
It's easy to knock indie games! How can you say "not being what it should have been"? That's code for "this would have been brilliant if it had $30 million spent on it!" Indie films aren't reviewed against blockbusters. Neither should this. It is the closest an indie game has come to matching an AAA game, and is totally amazing! This reviewer had many incorrect statements about this game, and it's just not good enough. You wouldn't see factual mistakes from a professional! (How does it feel?!)
@HardWarUK If you watch my other reviews, you'll find that I don't judge games based on budget--that's Gamespot's job--I judge games based on their quality. I laud Bastion for its combat and storytelling and I berate F.E.A.R. 2 for its deteriorating gameplay. I don't care about the budget so long as the developers put work into their product. Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the aforementioned Bastion are both excellent examples of low-budget titles shining immaculately.
@FunWithSexbad Great review sir. You outlined the strengths and weaknesses of this title in a clear and professional manner. Definitely subbing to your channel. I like your style especially compared to other YouTube game reviewers.
@HardWarUK It wasn't what it should have been, meaning its RPG mechanics were unrefined and very messy, making it far harder than desired to get into any class apart from the basic soldier. Had the developers put more work into balancing and explaining the mechanics properly, which is nowhere near as expensive as graphics, sound design, and optimization (all of which are just fine in E.Y.E.), I would have recommended it more. Not once did I compare it to big-budget blockbusters anyway.
@HardWarUK If I have made incorrect statements about the game, feel free to point them out. I accept criticism as much as I love giving it. But right now, you've been more incorrect than I have.
"You wouldn't see factual mistakes from a professional!"
Exactly. I am more professional than you.
You also seem to be ignoring all of the positive aspects I mentioned (and assume you agree with), such as the fucking awesome gameplay that the RPG mechanics are based around and the incredible style.
@HardWarUK I love E.Y.E. Yes, it is just an indie game. But had I not known about these flaws before purchase, it might've severely impacted my opinion on the game. It's an amazing game but that doesn't mean its shortcomings should be ignored.
So now a game that does realistic research, ie you take something and research it to see what it does, rather than all other games where you know what it i, but you have to research it! Name a single game where you TRULY do research on unknown items to see what they do when researched?!.
@HardWarUK If you're going to perform research on something called "UbiCosif Substance," they least that the game could give you is a history that describes its nomenclature. Assuming that science in the future is more advanced than it is now, I'm also going to assume that the chemists who discovered "UbiCosif Substance" didn't just pick a name for it out of a hat.
Also, keep in mind that realism is not necessarily good. After all, resurrectors aren't realistic, but they're awesome in E.Y.E.
And within the first minute he has two read triangle target quests, which he only needs to hit the USE key, but he tries to hack or destroy. So most if not all the negatives are because he didn't understand or use the tutorial or read the manual.
@FunWithSexbad You know I was just thinking about how much this review sounded like antisocialfatman. And then I read the description! Great review and I really want the game.

It didn't really help the game that it came out around the same time as Deus Ex: Human Revolution, either.

Try not to use bullshit marketing lingo like visceral.

@lneh Oh dear, that's a little frightening, considering the Dead Space 2 TV spots made half my brain cells commit suicide.
I'm too lazy to rewatch fifteen minutes of old footage to see what you're talking about. Example, perhaps?

@HardWarUK At 0:40 I run up to the console and press the use key. Nothing happens, so I hack the console and complete the objective.
At 1:00, the objective is to hack the Transcom. I therefore shoot at it for fun to see if it does anything, and then I hack the Transcom.
I follow the procedure that the game wants me to in both cases.
