With due respect to Obama, a lot of campaign promises he made were impractical. Perhaps he believed he would close Guantanamo, end the Iraq war in 16 months, end the Patriot Act, end wiretapping, promote peace, etc., but that was all based on his experiences as a candidate, not president.
There's no shame in admitting you were wrong, as he more or less has. Even if you want to get cynical on him, remember that politicians go back on their word every day. He's no better or worse than the rest.

Of course Obama's not gonna stand up to "them". He realized about a week into his term, & made clear from the X-Mas day diaper bomber that in order to keep radical Islam in check, the Bush-Cheney method is the only way to go.
