Can someone tell me what's the difference in the law between between a kid riding a bicycle down a hill and riding a skateboard down a hill? Is it because the bicycle preceded the invention of the car and the skateboard came after the car? Surly skateboarder riders and bicycle riders deserve the same rights to use the road as each other?

I live and skate downhill in portland, OR and we legally have all the same rights as a bicycle...one of the few places in the world where it's legal to downhill skate.

@gcratepayer well the thing is that you don`t have brakes in longboard. but pepole that think like this don`t realize that almost every longboarder is wise enough to use a spotter in corners where they have risks to crash with a car or bicycle etc, and almost every DH longboarder uses a helmet. as instead many young kids riding bicycles (atleast in finland where i live) don`t give a shit about traffic rules, don`t use a helmet and drive like a freakin` lunatics.

@0aapo downhill skateboarding is much less of a problem than people who dont understand it think. more deaths occur from playing football than DH. skilled riders almost never have to worry what kind of road theyre skating on. before corners, you can predrift to slow down, and in the middle of that predrift you can slide to a stop if there's anything in your way. you should always practice on safe streets with minimal traffic if you're a beginner but after a while everything comes naturally

@gcratepayer I agree totally , funny how the Council holds a big Holiday program and then typical of any level of politics changes tack.

Kinda funny when under the Law a Skateboard is considered a wheel recreational toy and it user a Pedestrian, which opens up a whole can of worms because as a Pedestrian you are NOT subject to any speed restriction and may procede any where that is public access. I do hope common sense will prevail.
