Hi all. I bought this comp in 2009 for like 200$. Just ordered an AMD TL-60@2ghz and 4gb of 800mhz ram, all for about 55$. Will let you know how the install and performance turns out.

Got the cpu installed. Dont see a huge performance boost, but it does seem faster at times. Benchmarks went up minimally. Hoping the ram comes in today and hoping that helps a lot more. Also, used mx-2 paste and hwinfo has it in the 60ºC range, not sure what the tf-20 was running at. All seems well tho. Video helped a lot on dissembling the lap. Had a few screws left over, lol. Thanks again.

Did my upgrade a year or so ago better now. Still brilliant dual core performance upgrade. Currently am using TK-42 cpu in mine and MX-2 thermal grease. I've been wanting to put more memory and a ssd but all my money goes to my gaming pc which is running 2 ssd's in raid 0 this laptop is my wife's but eventually I want to add memory and a 60gb ssd they seem to be coming down in price but my special hobbie is my gaming pc : ) thanx for posting that update.

really good all-round. ssd is in general the best improvement and 2 gb+ ram. though not to understate certain facts,SLC ssd is a sure point. but in budget wise, the type of controller used for cheaper MLC nand chips may provide the appropriate performance. to that controllers from Indilinx and Sandforce have shown very good performance margins. pcper.com/content/SSD-Decoder-­­­popup

If your processor starts than remains inactive and won't boot and the screen is also inactive. Beware- your notebook is not broken. After grieving for hours i looked up online for a fix...Here it is..You got to unplug ac adapter and take out the battery..then hold the power button for 30 seconds . Hoop it up to your power source and turn it on. This worked for me. Hope this helps anyone out that is in a similar situation.

the wireless card removal can be done with only removing the back 2 screws, it will spring up like the memory modules and can be slotted out alot easyer. Just an observation from my own upgrade. :)

I just upgraded with a chip I got from ebay - I was careful to replace everything in reverse that was taken apart. the laptop started up fine, then after a few minutes the display went white then black and now it won't start up? Did I get a bad processor or did I do something wrong?

2) Are any other modifications needed to ensure that cpu chip works smoothly?

3) Will windows 7 need re-installation after upgrading the cpu?

4) Will all programs remain intact after changing cpu (eg microsoft office etc)

@snoozylacetti Yes the chip will work properly, no other mods needed and all programs will remain the same. You will boot up your pc like normal win7 will updated the drivers to support the new cpu and that's it. Use the RICE GRAIN METHOD FOR APPLYING THERMAL PASTE ONLY MISTAKE I MADE ON VIDEO SEARCH IT ON YOU TUBE "HOW TO APPLY THERMAL PASTE".

Also why did emachines use the tf-20 chip in the e627 when they could have used TMDTL56HAX5ct AMD CPU 1.8Ghz Athlon 64 X2 with far better processing power??!

Dont suppose you have a guide on the E525 upgrade. I bought one low cost but im finding the celeron 900 2.2GHz a little slow... it likes to sit at 100% cpu usage alot lol. I have no idea what kind of CPU I would need either.

@olejnikster Thanks for the reply. I was actually able to upgrade the celeron to a Dual core pentium cpu T4300 2.1GHz and its a massive improvement over the celeron. I want to upgrade it again although its probably not worth it with it very poor graphics card holding it back.

the hinge cover clips are MUCH easier to remove from the inside part. I.e. open the lid and push the inside in the middle with your thumb and it takes much less effort to get it to pop loose.

So far everything is working great...got really lucky and everything booted the first time and has been running ok for about 15 min now. If I have any problems I will repost. Dual Core...bout time. That's exactly what I put in my son's 5617 or whatever Acer, same basic machine. It works well and doesn't tend to overheat. Mu eMD620 has an e4850 and I have to underclock it to 1.8 to keep it cool enough. His tl-52 (or whichever has dual 1.8 cores) just works, much simpler.

SterlokStalker: whats fragile is the actual piece of plastic pushing the ribbon cable in place it's thin so you have to be careful not to break it but taking it out and putting it back in place is not.

I have some questions. Do you really need to remove all those wires from the lcd sreen located on the plastic above keyboard as well as the wireless card, dvd drive, memory, hard drive? Or are those optional in ase you want more room for your screw driver to be able to get to the cpu and have the mtoher board all the way out?

Yes that's the only way to access the cpu there is no other way to access it.

Not sure about you particular model type of laptop to say for sure you can upgrade it, you might have to do some research on the web to see if it's possible. Also as far as battery life I can get about 3 hrs and 57 minutes on a full battery but I put the laptop on power saving mode and dim the screen while surfing the net but can't really say for sure on reg mode, hope this helps.

windows 7 is a great os but you can use any os system you want ubuntu, xp, vista not sure about mac x or snow leopard though but i pretty sure you can. Someone correct me if I'm wrong????

4 gigs max so-dimm ddr2 667 and it will take any sata hard drive currently the one installed can't remember make but it spins around 5400 rpm but you can upgrade that to the 7200 ones no problem.

unfortunately the K8 processor doesnt really improve much from increased clock speed... yeah sucks... i went for the TL-56 90nm in my acer 5532. its TDP is 33w but it is faster than the 65nm TL-56 and a little better than the 65nm TL-58 believe it or not.
