That shouldn't have been illegal. You can drop kick/kick the ball if its on the ground however if you do so it becomes a field goal attempt. I don't know what the result of this was but the play should stand as the return man caught the ball before it bounced (you can return field goal attempts). If he had stayed away and let the ball land the Saints would get the ball at the line of scrimmage.

That's NOT a "drop kick;" that's a muffed punt attempt. (Yes, a "muff" is actual NFL terminology.)

It is illegal to kick the ball--even a live ball--on the ground in the NFL (though, not in the CFL). Nice to see the ref's were on their game with that, throwing a penalty.

If your point is: "Hey, that's inconsistent!" Well, ... I agree. I think, the NFL can't get its head around about HOW to categorize a kicked loose ball. Is it a Punt or not? So, the rules just say you can't do it.

why would this be illegal if you can drop kick to try for a field goal and you can return a field goal, therefore the opposing player catching the ball without it touching the ground would be legal. The only reason there should be a flag thrown would be if the gunners split out would be down filed. But that's not the case because the opposing team received the ball where he kicked it off the ground. This call does not make any sense.

Don't think this is an illegal play. He had possession, the ball bounced off the ground and was kicked behind the line of scrimmage. This should have been ruled a failed drop-kicked field goal attempt with the ball going over on downs at the spot where the ball was kicked.

Drop kicks are still allowed in the NFL. Doug Flutie did it in his last game about 5 years ago. However, this is a fumble followed by an illegal kick of a loose ball. The saints declined the penalty and took a turn over on downs.
