@krysala No, it would NOT have counted as a "drop kick attempt" because this was not a drop kick attempt. It was simply illegally kicking a loose ball.
That shouldn't have been illegal. You can drop kick/kick the ball if its on the ground however if you do so it becomes a field goal attempt. I don't know what the result of this was but the play should stand as the return man caught the ball before it bounced (you can return field goal attempts). If he had stayed away and let the ball land the Saints would get the ball at the line of scrimmage.
THe flag should have been for illegally booting the ball. The punter basically fumbled the snap. He had to pick it up and kick the ball from a normal stance.
that was sweet! but a dropkick is a field goal attempt is it not? and you can return a field goal that stays in play. is this considered a fumble and purposefully moved downfield?
@hinkie07 When I saw it originally I thought it was a drop kick field goal too. But aparently you need to have control of the ball when you drop it for it to be called that. He got a 5 yard illegal kick penalty that was declined by the saints, ironically enough because it was an illegal kick they don't get the benefit of tacking it onto the end of the run like on a traditional kick.
So instead of backing Dallas up and having them punt again, they took it at their 16 and ended up throwing an INT 3 plays later, putting Dallas back at the NO 38.
(11:08) (Punt formation) 1-M.McBriar FUMBLES (Aborted) at NO 48, touched at NO 43, RECOVERED by NO-22-T.Porter at NO 14. 22-T.Porter to NO 16 for 2 yards (50-S.Lee). Penalty on DAL-1-M.McBriar, Illegal Kick, declined.

That's NOT a "drop kick;" that's a muffed punt attempt. (Yes, a "muff" is actual NFL terminology.)
It is illegal to kick the ball--even a live ball--on the ground in the NFL (though, not in the CFL). Nice to see the ref's were on their game with that, throwing a penalty.
@mwidunn you realize your allowed to kick a field goal by dropping the ball to the ground and kicking it while its on the ground or while its bouncing back up right? Doug Flutie did it a few years ago for the Patriots.
@fcscouto Yes. That's called a "drop kick." The kicker has possession of the ball direct from scrimmage and he kicks it IMMEDIATELY as it touches the ground. That wasn't what happened here: The Punter muffed the Punt and, then, tried to kick a loose ball on the ground.
If your point is: "Hey, that's inconsistent!" Well, ... I agree. I think, the NFL can't get its head around about HOW to categorize a kicked loose ball. Is it a Punt or not? So, the rules just say you can't do it.
@fcscouto Because the ball has been put into play directly from scrimmage. What the Punter did is called a "muff." (Not technicaly a fumble because he didn't have total possession and wasn't trying to advance the ball.) He muffed the punt and, then, tried to kick the ball as it was bouncing around on the field of play. That's a 10 yd. penalty: "Deliberately kicking a loose ball." Please, see the NFL's rulebook on-line. (Sorry, YouTube won't let me past the link.)
@SmoothGummi 1) The NFL uses 7 man crews, not 6. 2) The referee (white hat) is the one who threw the flag on the kicker just like they said (they said "the referee". They did not say "A referee). The referee is responsible for the kicker on punts and it his call in this situation.
@SmoothGummi 1) The NFL uses 7 man crews, not 6. 2) The referee (white hat) is the one who threw the flag on the kicker just like they said (they said "the referee". They did not say "A referee). The referee is responsible for the kicker on punts and it his call in this situation.
@SmoothGummi Woah ive been watching football for a while now and ive NEVER noticed that. I noticed the different positions but i always considered them all refs.
why would this be illegal if you can drop kick to try for a field goal and you can return a field goal, therefore the opposing player catching the ball without it touching the ground would be legal. The only reason there should be a flag thrown would be if the gunners split out would be down filed. But that's not the case because the opposing team received the ball where he kicked it off the ground. This call does not make any sense.
@traviswd4d i agree with that 100% ... @zurkazirka NFL can do drop-kick field goals, Doug-Flutie made one when he was on the Patriots, the thing is nobody tries them, it was last tried in the NFL 64 years before him.
Don't think this is an illegal play. He had possession, the ball bounced off the ground and was kicked behind the line of scrimmage. This should have been ruled a failed drop-kicked field goal attempt with the ball going over on downs at the spot where the ball was kicked.
Drop kicks are still allowed in the NFL. Doug Flutie did it in his last game about 5 years ago. However, this is a fumble followed by an illegal kick of a loose ball. The saints declined the penalty and took a turn over on downs.
@PanthervsRams2004 yes because if it was a fake punt and he fumbled the snap he is still allowed to pick it up and throw it. so yea you could throw it if you muffed the snap on a punt.
