These are great little planes! I've only had the opportunity to fly one a few times but you get the feeling that if the wind was right you could land it on the roof of your house.
Luckily the wind direction wasn't 90° to the left or right. Man, that would be such a MAJOR annoyance. But from the looks of it it would not made much difference for these guys :)
The first plane taking off is basically a super cub. The one landing is a experimental Maule with a m5 body and m7 wings with extended flaps. 180 hp with 90" prop I think.
What the HELL kinda plane is that???? I once saw a
cherokee 140 land vertically at Minot, but there was a 50 mph wind blowing straight down the runway, he used max flaps. Had to dump the flaps, stick full forward and open throttle to taxi back.
how many horsepowers do they have...or what is the trick to takeoff with like "walking-speed"..so impressive! CAN YOU TELL ME, what is needed for this? monster headwind and noting eaten for a month to get max. low weight?? :) would realy interesting me! Greeets
@MoAferika Hes taking off and landing into a heavy headwind. These planes generate a lot of lift even at slow airspeed, so if you are flying into a wind that is blowing at 40mph and your plane can take off at 40-60, you dont need a lot of groundspeed/distance to take off or land.
Redneck Flyin'!! Way cool!!!

That's the first plane I ever saw with a set of Super Swamper tires on it! =)
So what kind of plane is it anyway? No one has said so yet.

if this was a normal aircraft landing wanting more speed would they compensate by using a higher airspeed to make up for the slow groundspeed

teach these aircraft carrier pilots how to land like that and the navy could have tugs and not aircraft carriers lol

Valdez May-Day fly in. This was the 2009 event, correct? The winds that year were immaculate for the short takeoff and landing contest.

Aren't some bush pilots really talented? It seems like they can touch down and stop on a dime!

well two different airplanes, but still nice flying by both pilots, whatever the headwind speed was, which didn't seem like much.

I still think that it is not a STOL competition unless they compete at gross weight. Never have seen a bush pilot earning money while flying empty.
TailwheelForrest 1 year ago
lots of engine..hp to weight ratio of some of these highly modified bush planes is ridiculous
