  • OK. So what happened at 3:49?! Did he push the Vargo Decagon? The video was spliced or something. Did anyone see that?!

  • Regarding the Trangia style stove, whilst I don't use these often as I find them slow, they are efficient and longer lasting. I prefer the Tatonka Stainless Steel version of the Trangia stove, I didn't believe this myself but the first time I tested the stove at full capacity in my shed (so ideal conditions) it lasted for 1 hour and 17mins!!! I've never seen a meths stove go on so long.

All the best and thank you for the video,

    Ashley Cawley.

  • Some of those stoves are meant to have a pot on them. Of course they will burn faster without a pot.

  • Good old Trangia :)

  • Looking forward to your pot cozy video...

  • So if the stoves weren't used as they were designed and the fuel volume was not the same in all stoves.... what did this video show us???

  • the stoves with the open reservoirs are intended to have a pot on top of them. the pot "snuffs" out the flame in the center leaving only the jets on the sides. the titanium stoves have a small center hole which prevents the reservoir from burning openly. fair testing is using the stoves the way they were intended to be used.

thanx for the post. I'm more impressed with meth stoves. they work best in cold weather which is important to me.

  • Yes I will be doing an updated video shortly regarding some of these burners. The confusing one is the Evernew, which is a side burner and a top burner allowing the pan to be placed on top and also supported above.

  • I'm not sure this was an accurate test of efficiencty. Some of these stoves, particularly the side burners, require a pot on them to close of the main hole and reach peak efficiency.

  • as BrokenAeroVT points out, the white box stove does last MUCH longer with a pot on top than with an open flame (i know, i've used it for a fire to make s'mores). under real world cooking conditions, the difference in burn time between my white box stove and my trangia are not as different as seen in this all-things-equal test. the heat output of the white box is a bit higher, in my experience ("fierce" as TheOutdoorsStation says). they're both awesome stoves, though. never tried a vargo.

  • Hell yeah!, 21 minutes and look at the flame on that gorgeous little beast!!.........I would not swap you my Trangie for allllll the stoves in the world!! The hotter it gets the better it gets. (Remember the tortoise and the hare story boys n girls. Well your nanna didnt tell you it for nothin` ya know).

  • Thank you for such a splendid demo!

From your test,I've determined to acquire the triad.

    Thanks

  • Outstanding comparison. Thanks! 5/5

  • The whitebox stoves will bloom in under 20 seconds if you use a priming pan as instructed. Their burn time will differ with a pot on them preventing the throat area from burning.

  • Correct. In fact they will all prime if you do this, however the purpose of the video was to compare like with like, hence the same conditions were used for each stove.

  • Please please please, send Honey Stoves to Backpacklight USA. I am desperate for a honey stove. Thank you.

  • Watches & Time? This Brit isn't - don't even own one. Had the vids playing in the background while I did something else. Why did I follow that link here?? 'Lets just sit & wait' - Nooooo!

Did watch the end - the Trangia slill burning away after the Vargo has gone out but we don't see for how long? Then it's listed at 20+ mins, same as the Vargo?

  • funny how the brits are always concerned with watches and time!!!

granted its a test but still.

  • @StefanoPelinga How else would you measure fuel burn times? Please tell me.

  • another good video. an idea comes to mind. about the use of the solder mat could this not be made into a little bag and used for the honey stove thus providing a base plate when using it as a wood burning stove. at the moment i use an A10 tin lid. but now will make up a small bag out of a couple of solder mats.......
