Im an american (ethnically korean however) and im from the states and i have drank my fair share of soju. but i have NEVER seen someone drink it over ice.
@Xaeldaren it is a bit harsh by itself but if you take a shot and chase it with food or soup (anju),as koreans traditionally do, its really good. you can also mix it with beer or any kind of juice and you can barely taste the liquor, especially after youre a few bottles deep :) also Cham soju, from the daegu area, is the best...very smooth. cham-ee-sul, from the seoul area (what he has in this vid) tastes harsher.
Thanks for answering that question, I always wonder if it was similar to Saki in taste. Hmm Vodka hmm I guess I will have to taste it for myself..lol. I am surprised that they don't carry it in the U.S. since I can find most liquors I guess they cater more to Korean Americans neighborhoods.
Soju is not to my tastes, the hangover is horrendous. I've been in Korea over three years. The way its drunk here makes it very easy to see why Korea rates nu 3 in the world for alcohol consumption.
Its also probably the reason for this next statistic,Korea has the highest work hours on average in the world but only rates about 60% for workplace productivity.
A large % of the workforce is hungover.
Its also a major contributer to the high rates in domestic violence/child abuse
have to note that $1 in the US is about 1200 won in Korea and it would cost more in the US because of the difference in a number of factors. But good video and well analyzed Steve

Actually, traditional SOJU is made with distilled rice but in governance of President Park Jeong Hee goverment force to make SOJU using sweet potato and tapioca .
So I'd like to recommend you to try a traditional KOREAN SOJU- named ANDONG SOJU- which is more strong in alcohol degree but lots of sophiscate aroma and taste.
And one bad thing is much more expensive than ordinary soju.
I hope you have chance to try ANDONG SOJU and compare both kinds of SOJU.And post your opinion of both SOJU.
forget about responsible drinking...how about some responsible [and more informed] posting...and if you want to buy this stuff and don't necessarily trust your government to protect your health at all times and in all situations, buy it if it was made in andong, the ingredients are listed in your language, [and you have never heard of sake, which is essentially the same deal in terms of how to go about it except even the worst stuff tastes decent and it's acttually fit for human consumption].
why is it that cheap liquor raises the red flag if it's at home but somehow you think the same correllations don't exist abroad? bizarre. the stuff smells like rubbing alcohol and hospital antiseptic...you'd think that'd tip some people off...And my god--fun? the drinking culture here--i.e. forcing people to drink too much too fast like frat boys for life--- is not only killing these guys off at 50-55, it's directly related to a serious alcoholism and domestic violence issues here.
people--soju is poison--not slow poison like everything else you drink--POISON poison. several brands have been banned for import in the US because of ethanol and fermeldyhyde content [note andong soju--the real stuff with natural ingredients and proper distillation, is not anything like it's rot-gut counterparts--that is actually something to toot about], and Korean men are completely off the charts in the stomach and colon cancer stats--
I'd lived in Dublin, Ireland at that time i bought it 7 euro at the store, and when i ordered it at korean restaurant, it's 14 euro!! anyhow met 'Soju' in Europe was quite impressive experience.
From distilled ethanol. Generic soju is made this way and it is by and large the most purchased form of Soju. However, you can buy real, traditional style Soju in specialty places and it's popular in the countryside. It's a fun alcohol. I've had great nights with it too. Many. However, I've always found that soju is a really cheap alcohol, that has a really fun drinking culture about it. Tastes bad, but fun. It's inexpensive, social, and everywhere. It's a paradoxical alcohol.
I lived in Korea eight years. I know soju, I also know mokkali, Chung hwa, poktan-ju, the white rice wine, the blackberry wine, etc. I guarantee you that though most of the stuff this guy said is completely right, the description of what soju actually is inaccurate, at some points quite inaccurate. No offense ching-gu.
Soju was originally made with rice, yet. Now it is usually made from distilled ethanol. Tastes like rubbing alcohol. It is transparent. It's alc is 22-24% depending on brand.
Just to enlighten everyone a bit more... Soju is not really drunk alone (i.e on ice)... it really does taste gross (check out qiranger's face at 2:40!) Koreans always have Soju with food... most often a soup is involved and you drink your soju and eat straight away to help get rid of the aftertaste... as you get more and more tipsy, it does become real nice and easy to drink (but watch out for the next day!!!)... somehow Soju in Kore tastes better than outside... hmmm maybe its the better food!
Various bars have bamboo and ginseng soju. My friends actually make it and give it to me when I request it. I would try any HOF, they usually have the bamboo soju. If you go to Itaewon or around any of the US bases there are usually Clubs that sell the soju bowls (it's just soju and fruit juice), if you don't mind getting harrassed by Philippino juicy girls.
Ho soju on the rock? I haven't tried that but after watching you doing it, I felt sudden urge to do it.
Thanks.
P.S. Did you tried mix soju with beer (to make bomb liquor)?

Soju shouldn't taste very smooth like Japanese sake or sochu BECAUSE you need to eat with hefty food while drinking this Korean alcohol.
The slightly sweet sugary taste in soju is also the reason eating a lot of food: enticing taste buds.

I hope you have chance to try ANDONG SOJU and compare both kinds of SOJU.And post your opinion of both SOJU.

forget about responsible drinking...how about some responsible [and more informed] posting...and if you want to buy this stuff and don't necessarily trust your government to protect your health at all times and in all situations, buy it if it was made in andong, the ingredients are listed in your language, [and you have never heard of sake, which is essentially the same deal in terms of how to go about it except even the worst stuff tastes decent and it's acttually fit for human consumption].

why is it that cheap liquor raises the red flag if it's at home but somehow you think the same correllations don't exist abroad? bizarre. the stuff smells like rubbing alcohol and hospital antiseptic...you'd think that'd tip some people off...And my god--fun? the drinking culture here--i.e. forcing people to drink too much too fast like frat boys for life--- is not only killing these guys off at 50-55, it's directly related to a serious alcoholism and domestic violence issues here.
jessejjmk 3 years ago
people--soju is poison--not slow poison like everything else you drink--POISON poison. several brands have been banned for import in the US because of ethanol and fermeldyhyde content [note andong soju--the real stuff with natural ingredients and proper distillation, is not anything like it's rot-gut counterparts--that is actually something to toot about], and Korean men are completely off the charts in the stomach and colon cancer stats--

About soju...

(It's just 25% fo alcoholic solution)

Various bars have bamboo and ginseng soju. My friends actually make it and give it to me when I request it. I would try any HOF, they usually have the bamboo soju. If you go to Itaewon or around any of the US bases there are usually Clubs that sell the soju bowls (it's just soju and fruit juice), if you don't mind getting harrassed by Philippino juicy girls.
