So this track is on two albums? I've never heard this version (or the album Free Fallin) and am only familiar with the Unsung Heroes version. And the live versions, of course. This is a lot longer. Very good too.
ok here's the deal. Saw them in a very small club in Memphis, around 80,which they literally blew the top off of, but the kicker and no small one @ that Eric Johnson opened for them. Last time I'd seen anything remotely close was Hendrix in 70. Damn I'd trade a few tomorrows for a single yesterday!
@1952FMS I know what you mean. I saw the Steve Morse Band open for Rush, I also saw Malmsteen open for AC/DC. You just didn't want the open band to stop.
This stuff draws small crowds and spears/aguilera/rap/etc. sell out sports arenas. What friggin sick times. Yes, hey you reading this in 2090 -- some of us weren't idiots.
@GGov86 Closet crap lover? Pretentious -- LOL. Pretty much now like "racist" and "bigot", no longer meaning anything because it's been so over-used in place of a meaningful response. Maybe your next comment can include the F-word, "Nazi", "hater" or "meds."
Morse gets VERY Brian May at 3:20. It's almost a note-for-note, exact guitar tone duplicate of Queen's "Procession". This has to be on purpose, as a tribute. There's no other way it makes sense.
My first experience with the dregs was Unsung Hero's tour with newly added Mark O'Connor on Violin/guitars. I am a guitar player and I left there wanting to smash my guitar LOL But since they totally blew me away, it was an inspiration to become as good as I could be. Been following them for the last 30 years. Met Steve
My God, i just love this original version. The tones! The ecclesiastical first guitar beak, followed by a British-themed, segment, with bells and triangles, then the trading 8yhs. 16ths..32nds.. A genius piece of composition, and playing.
@randallcaster i TOTALLY agree! live . i dont know what the hell is up with the soundman!! it gets completely umbalanced and HORRID EQ--i have seen them --and Steve is rippin !! i am 125 feet away and he is in key (by his fingers) and face in fierce-- but i cant even hear him--and bootlegs as well Same shit!!! Hire ME!!!!!!!!
@randallcaster i Totally agree with your take on the album version dude-- i sent a post but deleted it because i said 125ft away from Steve-- meant 25 ft.-,and he was rippin through the whole gig!! but i could only tell becouse of his freting and picking -to my eye wereON-plus the emotions in his face. I barely heard him-- and these were the days of Monitors! what i played live with!!!! no soundchecks? What the hell i dunno, but its not only me--i have heard bootlegs--same!!! HIRE ME !!!
tem gente aqui escrevendo portugues de Portugal, ou brasileiros que esqueceram como se escreve corretamente o portugues brasileiro! Boas palavras, mas sem alguma coesão.
Took my son to see the Dregs in Indianapolis way back when. They came in 45 minutes to an hour late, something about not being able to find a parking place. The crowd was a bit pissed off at first, UNTIL the guys started playing. THE DREGS FLOORED EVERYONE. I was especially impressed by their trading 8's, then 4's and 2's. What a tight BAND.
Saw them twice in the early 80's in Dallas. I remember sitting near this woman who was obviously there just for the sake of her boyfriend. After a few songs, she turned to him and said "these guys are amazing." Quite true.
I saw the Dregs several times in the late 70's and early 80's in Birmingham, Alabama. The crowds ranged from about 250 to 500 so it was always good acoustics. The Dregs were very cool and they never dissapointed. The way you hear them on this record is they way they sounded live. They were all equally superior musicians. I've never heard a musical group any better than this line up. I remember them leaving the audiences in disbelief. The Dregs were KILLER!
I was too a big Dregs fan in the 70's. and sent Sent Steve a Christmas card telling him about avenue in GR MI, which would be perfect for them to play. He was gracious enough to send me one back, thanking me and showing up that spring. T was with them then, as this was after release of NOLDS. Opened with "I'm freaking out1"! What a special event for a die-hard serious guitarist fan! Anyway, rip T we all love you.
Met them in Atlanta. I just got out of the Navy in 85. It was a Bruce Springsteen concert. They came walking past to see it from upfront. So we told them to sit down with us. They did. Then a child came bye and kicked them out. They had no idea who they were. That was T. Lavits, Rod, and Steve.
first time seeing them was in high school, 77 or so, at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Prov., RI. Leaned on the stage and was so close I coulda touched Andy's tuning pegs, if he wasn't playing a Steinberger LOL. -
Absolutely blew me away and been a fan of Morse, Morgenstein and the Dregs ever since.
Epic section starting at 3:23. the progression at 3:35-3:45 is just so grand. love Morgenstein's use of percussion, and the high hat that sets up the next section of sweet arpeggios, scalar madness...
Yes, Muya, it was an excellent performance. Almost too good. The rhythm section (well, I guess that'd be the whole band actually) was so tight, it made one uncomfortable. I mean, it was so exact, precise, and well-rehearsed, it seemed impossible to have been played live so well. But it was.
The band would stay in Charleston when they first started out. I went to their graduation recital i Miami when they were at the music school. This was when they were also known as the Miami Rock Ensemble. BB King joined them on stage once. Rob M was the best drummer. T Lavitz came on the scene later, he played the sax.
i have seen them in chattanooga 3 times, the time you mentioed, once at the greater chattanooga music hall, and once at UTC. get this- we got back stage and smoked a joint with mark parish and andy west in my 65 mustang. got to meet steve adn twiggs
