Many tks for your post.. I never tried to play cavaquinho, i'm a brazilian. I own one in 1976 - spruce and brazilian rosewood all solid. Never played it. This instrument have been closed at wardrobe for 34 years! Thinkig what to do with it , so today i'd tried Aquila Nylgut UKULELE strings and it performs very nice. BUT God.. my cavaquinho deserves a better future seeing you,,you shed a light on it,, really!
Thank you for watching. It was just an experiment. Actually these strings are for another type of instrumet : the timple. Timple and cavaquinho have some similarities, so I tried nylgut strings on cavaquinho to reach a more confortable plaiyng with arpeggios. It's possible to play with steel strings too, but IMHO the sound is inappropriate for this kind of pieces.
Some brazilians commenting here were confused because you play with nylon strings and without pluck... But I must say the result is really nice!

What gauges, and where would you suggest I buy to replicate this experiment. I would like to try it out.
Thanks for the info

I love the nylon string sound on the cavaco. - Are there different gauges for the timple strings?

Yes, there are.
Actually I found the gauges a little bit small for the cavaco. So the string tension is not optimal, and tends to let them too soft.

I agree the sound is "just right"
Are you speaking of the Canary Islands Timple ?
I do hope you do another video. Great stuff.

Very inventive.. excellent !
I am curious why you didn't "fingerpick" it with the steel strings.. though I do think the sound is great and nylgut appropriate for the piece.
I will assume you used "concert" uke strings ??
Hope you do another video
Thanks..
