  • That was three minutes of my life well spent. Actually, I might make that six minutes.

  • It's amazing how little known this song was. It demonstrates his technical virtuosity, vocal range and depth and meaning of his lyrics. But like any really well-written song, it will stand the test of time. 36 years since Turnstiles was released. Thanks for posting this DundeeBhoy 2007.

  • wish this song was played more....love it on songs in the attic, but really, it should be on the essential billy joel too

  • love the slide at from like 1:15 to 1:18

  • Leave the kid alone good for you 13 year old.

  • k its great you like Billy Joel's music, but why do we need to know your age..

  • @rockandroll9876 True that, nobody cares. People just need to understand that good music is timeless!

  • Billy joel plays summer highland fallls, like a man, on so mutch cocane.

  • @Jugivadi LOL what is that, a haiku?

  • The lyrics on this song are ridiculously good. There's a reason why most singers stick to one and two-syllable words-- getting words like "inhumanity" to line up metrically is damned nearly impossible.

The thing that separates Billy Joel from the average pop idol is how well-crafted his stuff is. He's like the desk in grandma's attic-- yeah, he's aged a little, but he's sure as hell better than whatever crap you just picked up at Ikea.

  • @DarklordZagarna I so agree...and to have it be cohesive and relevant is an even bigger feat.

My favorite Billy Joel moment, was seeing him Live at Carnegie Hall ('Turnstiles' tour), and him dedicating the show to his Piano Teacher, who said he'd never make Carnegie Hall...

  • @hocuspocusfocusable I love it that Billy shoved it up his piano teacher's pompous and jealous butt and played Carnegie Hall.

  • i absolutly adore this song!!!!

  • im not yet born but i already love this song.

  • im only 4 nd i love this stuff!!

  • @Mcataruz Why are you in YouTube?

  • it is a proven fact that this is Billy's best song :-) and quite possibly the greatest song ever written.

  • 'Turnstiles' was extremely overlooked at the time. Billy was finding his voice on this one, and alot of people started to take notice of him when he did The Stranger. But Turnstiles in my opinion trumps The Stranger. For one thing, it's got Miama 2017 on it. Summer Highland Falls, Angry Young Man. James. its an amazing album

  • SADNESS or euphoria. When i first heard the song, a bell rang in my head. If you know what manic depressed is this song will give you ammo. Great song from my point of view. Dangerous as well, look at solutions don't get lost focussing at the problems.

  • @ABC2TV so true. The feelings are all too real for me, this song has been a life line for many years, though I'm only 24, the sadness that grips my soul can be quite cruel. But its either sadness or euphoria, and I choose the latter. Time to go jog, with this song playing in my ears!

  • Best Billy Joel song on his best album!!!!!

  • this song is beautiful.. 8 dislikes? wtf?

  • One of my All Time Favorite Albums, and one of my Favorite Songs........Billy Joel Transitioned from California back to New York on this Album........Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway) is also on this album, and Say Goodbye to Hollywood.....!

  • Although we choose between reality and madness it's either sadness or euphoria.....Poetry...my heart is bursting.

    Smooch smooch billy

  • Reminds me of all my summers growing up. It's either sadness or euphoria. Right on!

  • @MCHOPE100

All Billy Joel songs are amazing! Just because this song didnt sell as much as his more famous songs, doesn't mean it isn't top class. Billy Joel is a Legend.

  • This is one of the worst Billy Joel songs I have ever heard. I think many of his other songs like Piano Man, Entertainer, Ballat Of Billy The Kid, Keeping The Faith, Scenes From An Italian restaurant and many of his other songs are far better than Summer Highland Falls. Music is music and Summer Highland Falls does not fit Billy Joel. "Don't Ask Me Why".

  • @MCHOPE100 pretty sure its better than anything you could ever write

  • @MCHOPE100 It's one of hiw own personal favorites that he's written. It's also an all time fan and critical favorite. It's a perfect little song.

  • i can listen to this song over and over and over a million times.....

  • i remember listening to this so much back in the 80s that i burned out the cassette

  • my Mother was born & raised in Highland Falls....this song always brings her back close to me...miss you so very much Mother! <3

  • @sp0ttedp0ny330 me too :) and my whole family. not proud of it though...

  • Why are great songs always too short? :(

  • this and downester alexa hit a soft spot, this is amazing musical talent. nothing fabricised, alterd, of tuned, simple talent.

  • One of his greatest albums. To me at that time, he was a white Stevie WOnder. He had his own wortd view of music unlike anyone else during the 70's and 80's which made the music timeless. Turnstiles was a great album which sneaked upon you. The more you listened to it, the more it permeated and became part of you.

  • im not a fan of this music at all but this song is just f'in magical. great song.

  • Okay..who could dislike this? I just don't understand how that's possible. :]

  • I definately adore this song, I listen to it almost every day. [:

  • 8 people are going to get cancer.

  • @batorre dude, thats fucking terrable and not funny at all

  • @delly659 Your spelling & grammar are "terrable", but incredibly funny. Go figure.

  • @batorre ohhhhh your cool i spelled something wrong, have fun with wishing people cancer?

  • @delly659 damn, batorre got owned. XD

  • @Mrsignerman44 hahah :p

  • Definitely one of my favourite Billy Joel songs. <3

  • I have songs in the attic this isn't from there, anyone know what album this live version is from?

  • This song is one of the primary reasons I started playing piano. It is one of my favorites to now play.

  • This is one of the most perfect songs ever ever ever.....shame elton and joel will never ever be seen on this earth again, the likes of will never happen, and for that, i suppose, is a good thing. This So it Goes, Vienna just totally stellar perfection. Like, euphoric !

  • @ElecticGuruofHotness im not trying to sound like a smart as*s but you know there still alive right?

  • Joel said this song is among his favorites along with So It Goes, Vienna, and Lullabye.

  • He also performed this live at his 2000: The Millenium Concert and it's a bit better quality(in my opinion). And btw...its EUPHORIA

  • It's like he tried to fit as many big words into a song as possible, haha. Great song.

  • One of the best singer songwriters that ever was. Thanks for posting.

  • this is one of billy's best ! too bad it never made it to the airwaves so "everyone" could enjoy it !

  • GREAT FREAK'N SONG wish he would have stuck to this rather than doing that doop stuff. This song soothed my soul at a time when it was shreded to pieces. Thanks Billy...YOUR THE BEST!!!!

  • I used to live in highland falls.. shit hole.. Nice song tho.

  • @sammyada Well if it truly is a shit hole, then the song makes more sense to me. Thx for the info ... and no, that's not sarcasm. It makes me appreciate the song more.

  • Comment removed

  • @sammyada haha yep, sure is

  • cool =]

  • I love this song. Turnstiles was my favorite album growing up, and I this is one of my favorites. (:

  • Although this was released on Turnstiles, a live version was re-released on "Song in the Attic." SITA is all live versions. My favorite album for that reason.

  • @yendor42 Songs in the Attic is a frickin epic awesome live album. Miami 2017 on that album was the best I've ever heard that song.

  • the Super Seventies!

  • Turnstiles 1976

  • What the heck of Honesty? this is the masterpiece!!!!!!!

  • Yup, chock full of memories of my youth in Levittown...

  • This song is when I fell in love with him - live in 1977 at a college campus. ($2 tickets!) One of the best concerts I've EVER been to. I went out and bought all his albums the next day, and I've never done that before or since. I've never heard anybody play piano like him before or since either.

    Gorgeous.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Truly brilliant. I saw him in concert when I was thirteen, at the Westchester Premier Theatre in Yonkers, NY. Then at the Rockland Community College Field House at 15...1977?

  • @furmountain21 You are so freak'n lucky!!!! Man, I wish!

  • Hey check out my cover of this song!

  • I love it.

  • in my top 5 of best songs ever. just an overall incredibly written, composed and performed song.

  • What a line.. (for me one of the all time greats ever)...

"For all our mutual experience, our seperate conclusions are the same"

  • It just doesn't get much better than this, does it?

Billy is an artist, genius, poet and singer all in one...the biggest 'enterntainer' I have ever had the pleasure to listen & dream too/with.

Thank you for the great stories & lines Billy, your da man!!!!

  • My favorite Billy Joel song of all time... I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own... What a picture he portrays with his words...

  • the truest performing singer so far

  • Silverfish, I said the same thing in my era, loved The Dead,Neil and Billy Joel ...was sad about the state of music...Than came Nirvana,A&C and Pearl Jam.....have faith....we are due!

  • i was so sad he didnt play this when i saw him last year =[, still was a amazing concert.

  • LOVE THIS SONG

  • I like this version better then the recorded one, it's a lot faster and just, in my opinion, better sounding. What has happened to music nowadays. If only I was born earlier.

  • i know..im only 13 and billy is my fav...gosh..rap..pop....its all crap next to this

  • @Beatlerock4

Technically, Billy Joel is pop. Not the pop like nowadays, but it's still pop.

  • @Beatlerock4 holy moly about time i found another person who is my age and likes billy joel

  • @Beatlerock4 Thank You! Billy Joel, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and so on are the artists that should be more of an infulence on modern music. The rap and hip hop crap sucks. I mean you imagine singing rap at 90 years old or do you imagine singing this song to your kids and grandkids. Something that has an emotional pull and attatchment. Personaly this song brings tears to my eyes and gives me goosebumps.

  • @Beatlerock4 i'm 15 and i fully agree. music is garbage now. what happened to the great acts like paul mccartney. ac/dc. aerosmith. kansas. etc. they arent going to be around much longer and after that... there's shit

    haha

  • @Beatlerock4 I absolutely agree with you. I am also 13 and whenever I make a comment about Billy Joel they give me a look or ask who he is. Or if I say I don't listen to most new music they look at me like "what is wrong with you, freak?" He has so much talent and artist of today just can't sing. It's all autotuned and I hate it. This world needs some real music

  • It's either sadness or euphoria.

  • isn't it always?

  • did you know Roxanne? what a great great girl...and this song, ah, the memories.

  • Wow. What a great version of a great song!

  • I only own Turnstiles on LP, I put it on at least once a month just to hear this song. It's so much fun to play on piano. I can't figure out the precise rhythm, but I manage!! Billy Joel's a genius, you listen to this classical album and you really see it firmly.

  • One of his best

  • This has always been one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. His best work was before hit struck it big, pre-1977.

  • billy just has that edge to his voice, his piano and songs are magnificent, but its his voice thats takes him above the rest

  • such an underrated song

  • absolutely brilliant, what a great song writer!!

  • I live in Highland falls, and can not for the life of me figure out when and where he lived here, other than early 70s in a Cragston Neighborhood. I also can not figure out what tragic thing happened that made him write the song, and i've even checked old newspapers. So if anyone knows... please comment!!

  • I think the tragedy was a personal one for Billy,.. returning back home to N.Y after an L.A songwriting contract with a major record label, and on the down slope of a marriage, and all that goes with that combination of circimstance!

  • Roxanne Donnery's house - the big, white one on Old State Road. It was the last place BJ and his wife stayed before their divorce. It was a summer rental for him. Summer - Highland Falls. Sad.

  • @MrMrspeach its not on old state road, its on kings road in cragston.

  • amazing that his pitch is perfect, even live. truly one of the best musicians of all time

  • with a Turnstiles he peaked his head through a little with the Stranger he broke through and never made a bad album since I don't think except the classical one

  • このピアノは神!

  • He played this live for us in Syracuse a few years ago. I was ecstatic.

  • Billy's classical training comes out here. Prime of his career.

  • agreed

  • absolutely love this song.

  • The piano is perfect !!!!!!

  • ;3

    music soothes the savage beast

I should play this song when I'm angry

  • Will always be one of my favorite songs of all time...something about it.

  • elton couldnt possibly have done it better,..

  • this song and vienna are my favorite. my mom raised me on billy joel's song and I am in love with his remarkable talent! makes me completel weak just listening to his voice and lyrics... and that piano!

  • Is it sadness or euphoria?

  • When I saw him live a few years ago he asked the crowd if we wanted him to play this or Vienna. This won.. one of my favorite musical moments/songs!

  • @consideritspoofed I was born and raised in the Hudson Valley in New Windsor, Newburgh and Cornwall, as a teen delivered "The Evening News" newspaper in Highland Falls...BJ's music was pretty much a staple of life growing up...grateful for it

  • love it

  • Billy can totally sing it when he feels he has to knock one out of the park! He is still the man!

    Joey Fulco

  • -really great song. prbly one of his best along with "angry young man" and "Rootbeer Rag"

  • @snicks34 Nice to see someone else out there that loves "Root Beer Rag"!

  • Shame he can't sing it like this anymore, what a great song.

  • I don't know, I think his voice sounds even better now it's mellowed a little. But hey, that's just me.

  • It's not the same as the one from Turnstiles, but it's very similar.

This is my favorite song of his (maybe my favorite song, period) and it makes me cry for a bunch of reasons. :[

    :]

  • If I am ever put on the spot for my favorite track this is it. says it all

  • @supersamerzThey say that these are not the best of times, but they're the only times i've ever known..... It's either sadness or euforia ! One of the best song ever written!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @supersamerz its either sadness or euphoria

  • @supersamerz the bass is sooooo much better on this version than Turnstiles too!! makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

  • It's the musings of a young man summering in New York......use your imagination

  • Or maybe it's the musings of a young man who has lived in Highland Falls all his life and is reflecting....

  • don't really get the title and how it fits into the song, but it is really alsome anyway love billy joel

  • he used to live in Highland Falls it was written after something tragic happend in the town

  • @sarbearlovesyou after a divorce he went through?

  • Songs in the Attic is really great!!!!!!!

  • A million thanks for postings this gem of a tune. Perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies..." Billy forever!

  • best song of his

  • Nothin' like a little Liberty.

  • Can someone explain to me why Billy Joel is not given the credit he deserves? It's difficult to write a great melody, and he's consistently written them for 4 decades. And his musical ideas are complex. (See Scenes from an Italian Restaurant).

  • Well he wrote then for just over 20 years. :-)

  • it's like an audio orgasm in yer ears !!

  • This is a great song. I love anything Billy Joel plays but my favorite song is And So it Goes.

  • Turnstiles........IMHO his greatest work

  • Agreed.

  • Turnstiles is a vastly underrated album. Summer, Highland Falls, New York State of Mind, I've Loved These Days, Miami 2017... just great stuff.

  • i am doin a dance to this song and i love it soo much!

But does anyone care to explain what it means to me please? =]

  • this an awesome song it has gotten me though so many trials in my life

  • Ahh I wish I could play it that fast. This is my favorite song ever.

  • Never heard this version before. Where's it from?

  • C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University, New York. May 6, 1977. Hope this helps.

  • wow

  • I think it's from 'Songs in the Attic'

  • this is not the same as the version on songs in the attic. It's good as hell, but not the one from the album

  • It's probably his version from 'Turnstiles'

  • Comment removed

  • @spamforbobby songs in the attic album

  • This and I've Loved These Days are always on my Ipod and I listen to them nearly every time I walk my dog.

    Beautiful, like a Doors song.

  • this is my favorite version

  • This is very similar to the version on Songs In the Attic, which is my all-time favorite song of his.

  • luv that song and album

  • This song is amazing...it is so full of truth...hits me every time...when my beloved left me it was the only song that made me realize how human I really was. I still do not know how much is reality or madness, sadness or euphoria...but I still pray at the Cathedral we built...and where my dream still lives...

  • Very Impressive, He sounds the same live as in the studio recording.

  • That's because Billy Joel actually has excellent abilities. And is God.

  • Haha!

    The hell he is!

  • Er, I'm pretty sure he is

  • Mmm, I wouldn't say the lyrics are "on par with poetry," but they're darn good. To be nitpicky, I would say the hook "it's either sadness or euphoria" is a little vague after the detail and flow of each verse.

You have to understand, though, this is a tiny criticism. Billy Joel has long been, BY FAR, my favorite "popular" artist (as opposed to "classical" artists like, say, Mahler), and I think this is one of his strongest albums. For a while, years ago, this was my favorite song on it.

  • I have long felt the stigma and shame that comes from being a Billy Joel fanatic. It's only since I've been recognised by my social circle as a versatile musician and multi-instrumeltalist that I can walk into a clowded room and say "Billy Joel is a god to me" and people actually listen. Then I play them this song...
