It's sad that one book that can over shadow a person the way Mommie Dearest did. Content that can ever been proven real or fiction. It's amazing that Faye Dunaway plays Joan Crawford and that Bette Davis made no bones about her feeling toward Dunaway. She really never bitched about Crawford but Dunaway was a real Bitch to the cast and entire Crew on one movie that Bette Davis & Faye Dunaway co-starred together in. I agree with Bette on how a professional actress should behave.
@jpptown58 I think she was talking about Marlon Brando who rejected the Oscar in 1973 for "Godfather", and he gave a political speech instead of an acceptance speech
Whatever Joan's shortcomings may have been, she was the consummate professional--even toward the end of her film career when she was making schlock horror films. Joan was the best!
@artemiscarrington Yes. She had the practically be pushed on the stage, she was so petrified; and then, when she received such a rapturous reception, she broke down and cried. There are photos of this, too.
Years earlier Joan was a big supporter of the Academy Awards, but if she were alive today her opinion on the show would probably continue to decline as it is here.
Now it has evolved into a gratuitous 2 hour spectacle designed to get ratings and sell commercials in-between, with award categories for things people haven't even heard of just to drag it on and sell more spots..its really lost something special along the way, as Joan says the dignity and the beauty is gone, and it hasn't come back.
@GlanceofGlory - are you saying she might have had a bit to drink? Cause I sort of wondered about that towards the end of the interview! She might be just a LITTLE bit in her cups. Tho there's nothing wrong with that. :)
@MrRedFredSaid Well, like many of her peers, she did rock the bottle for a bit of "enthusiasm". She's got a good buzz going here, a little bit of liquid courage. I think if Joan were to write a list of favorite things it would be: Mass Adoration, Liquor, and Liquor-Laced Romps. Hey, having loads of trauma and OCD to manage kept this sister pent-up and high-strung, she needed a little alleviation
@GlanceofGlory - regardless, she did have a lot of class. At least they tried to keep their personal issues under wraps instead of writing tell-all books and expecting a round of applause on Oprah for putting all of their business in the streets, so to speak.
@MrRedFredSaid Well, actresses of Joan's caliber today don't even really write tell-all books when you think about it. Oscar winners like Kate Winslet or Kate Blanchett or Meryl Streep will never do anything like that. Nonetheless, her methods of gaining publicity are somewhat in sync with these times. Remember, she did write a whole book on how to be a lady and maintain a "yes" face, things like that, not to mention her Christmas specials and everything.
Franchot Tone Beat the Crap out of Joan Crawford, makeup artists has their work cut out for them! Poor Joan, no woman should ever be beaten by a so called man.
If I walked into my trailer from a hard day on the set and found my husband giving head to some stupid starlet I don't think I would ever give him a caption in my life either!
This is a fun interview, the host is very gracious, and I even like movie trivia. However I can't stand star worship, gushing, raving, fanaticism, clapping at every answer, unconditional awe. It's like religion in a way, I think it's in the same part of the brain, they both involve memorizing trivial details, like quotes in the Bible, rules of conduct (especially when they have a number), movie titles and years of birth.
The first thing you need when you want to start a cult is enumerative trivia, you don't even have to try to convince people that memorizing it is important, they will do it on their own, maybe because the only reward they ever got in their youth was for memorizing stuff in school. Marketing experts know this, you have to give a sense of reward to potential fans of xyz (Trekkers are the ultimate examples). Look up Michael McDonald and Larry Felner from MadTV.
I think the "unconditionals" of the world are its greatest threat, and they don't even know easy they are to manipulate by powers-that-be. When you can't have a rational discussion with someone, that's the end of everything.
She was so incredible to her fans--so many people don't know that (true fans do) but that damn book ruined her reputation...it's a damn shame! Great lady! Thanks so much for this awesome interview liftoffgirl!
all the mommie dearest haters need to listen to this.

This is the way a star should be treated. And Miss Joan Crawford deserves it.
