Used to watch this and other Merrie Melodies before school every morning and on Saturdays during the 1960's. I want to see the one where the Spider sings Would You Like To Take a Walk to Little Miss Muffet.
Honest to goodness, I remember this cartoon episode! Strange though, I recall the ending with the iceman saying,. "She makes the mess...she makes the nest ...well anyway, she makes good pies!" That phrase stuck in my head for years on end and I had the occasion of using it in reference to an "ex" who happened to be a good cook - but also other issues - recalling this exact cartoon.
It must've been 'cool' to have ice delivered to you every week. XD I wonder if an icebox costs less in the long run when compared to an electric fridge?
"I only have ICE for you' would have in context been funnier! Bing Crosby is spoofed [imitation unknown], as is Katharine Hepburn [ voiced by Elvia Allman of oldtime radio lore], & radio comic "Joe Twerp" does the lead in this Cyrano like story [two 1990s blockbusters, "The Truth about Cats & Dogs", and part of "Dumb and Dumber", & a 1972 "Brady Bunch" episode, would use this "guy or girl snags their prospective love interest by proxy" plot device] - listen to our hick hero's voice
@SteveCarras "'I only have ICE for you' would have in context been funnier!"
Which is ironic, considering that this was the title used for the original release, as Martha Sigall recalled. "I Only Have EYES for you", however, could have been the working title for the cartoon.
For those not in the know, the voice of Katie Canary is performed by none other than the late great Margaret Hamilton. Perhaps they wished one with a beak for authenticity.
It was a "soundalike", 'Dean' ("borrowed", as I've said, from the soundtrack of "Let It Be Me"). In fact, Bing sued Schlesinger's studio because of the image they used of him in 1936's "Bingo Crosbyana" {a fly that attracts the ladies, ultimately revealed to be an utter coward in the face of danger}, but the suit was later dropped. Bing's image was "soft peddled" in future Warner cartoons, but they did make references to his race horses as Bob Hope did ["What, it came in last AGAIN??"]...
Prof. Mockingbird's "Hello, stranger!" greeting [4:04] is a reference to Sam Hearn's popular "Schlepperman" character (his famous cathcphrase), featured on Jack Benny's "JELL-O PROGRAM" at the time; Schlesinger's staff were avid radio listeners, and knew which personalities to "inject" into their stories...
Originally released in March 1937 (this is a 1945 reissue). Avery directed; Bob Clampett and Virgil Ross were originally credited as animators; Carl Stalling wrote and conducted the score. "Katie Canary" is supposed to be a satire on Katharine Hepburn ("Reahlly, it is"). The "radio crooners" on her wall are caricatures of Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee, with Eddie Cantor{?} on the left on top of the radio. "Bing" is supposedly on the radio [a reused vocal track from 1936's "Let It Be Me"]...
Yep. Those days are over. We're living in Hideous animation Hell. On the UPSIDE though, and don't quote me on this, I heard that Pixar is making an acquisition, and Disney will open the doors back to traditional animation again.
@1aundulxaldin I don't know when exactly a year ago this was written, but it's already happened quite some time before, in fact this acquisition was made in 2006. But more credit goes to the success Princess and the Frog for greenlighting a hand drawn movie roughly every two years (including Winnie the Pooh and a possible Mickey Mouse comeback). Disney is making a slow comeback in films, now we need to fix it's channel!
2 people failed in paying court to Katie Canary, because they sing out of tune.

ah, the old rubber hose days. as awesome as this is, though, Tex really revolutionized cartoons by kicking stuff like this in the balls.
