It gained popularity on its own merits; it wasn't playing what's popular just to make money. It was a good fucking album. And that's what the scene lacks from time to time. Remember the direction of radio-punk before AI came out? Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne. Those bands died when AI was released.

They play a mix between melodic punk and a sort of arena rock sound now. It's not bad, it was just a decision they made. I grew up during 90s skate punk and third wave ska explosion and shit, and I listen to Green Day as well as Descendents. Fuck it. Yeah, GreenDay and Blink 182 probably did get some influence from the Weasels. If they grew up in the 80s and called themselves punk, it would be hard NOT to be influenced by SW or the Queers, especially if you grew up on the West Coast. So what?
SW and the Queers were favorites of mine growing up, along with Black Flag and Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys, etc. I'm not particularly fans of Green Day or Blink, compared to other main stream bands they are at least tolerable in small doses.

I don't see why people even try to create some schism based on which era of punk you grew up in or attribute your musical growth to. I grew up during 90s skate punk and third wave ska explosion and shit, and I listen to Green Day as well as Descendents. Fuck it. I'm not the type to decide I don't like American Idiot because it's popular. It's still a great album and the way it flows is really nice. I'm a faggot, so whatever.

Yeah, GreenDay and Blink 182 probably did get some influence from the Weasels. If they grew up in the 80s and called themselves punk, it would be hard NOT to be influenced by SW or the Queers, especially if you grew up on the West Coast. So what?
SW and the Queers were favorites of mine growing up, along with Black Flag and Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys, etc. I'm not particularly fans of Green Day or Blink, compared to other main stream bands they are at least tolerable in small doses.

It's actually explained on 'Kill the Musicians' and in interviews, he wrote it to appease a gay fan who was mad about the Sloppy Seconds song "I don't want to be a homosexual!", because he felt it was anti-gay. (Ben and me don't see anything wrong with it though)

Ok blink's main influences were bad religion, NOFX, the cure, and screaching weasel. Dude, blink will always be punk because where they came from. There's always a hint of punk in it. AND NOT EXCITING!? they sang about transvestites and fucking dogs, and getting blowjobs. People don't know blink very well obviously. I still think they have a hint of punk now, just not as much. They got older, thats all. But yea i love blink and screeching weasel. Both great bands =]
