technically, I think they're both extremely well, but Jennifer Koh stands out more because she's really focused into the music and plays for real(in my opinion of course)
Jennifer Koh's Tchaikovsky is truly outstanding. Saw her perform it two years ago, and you could tell that there was no hint of boredom with the piece...she still has the same passion now as she had during the competition. Outstanding musician!
I think the Russian girl was way better especially tone-wise and overall musicality. Notice how Jennifer's sound is reduced to chicken scratch towards the end.
Jennifer Koh is great here and I heard her this year and she sounds even more amazing now. She has passion and technique and understands the soul of the music she plays. I wish I could play like her!!!!
The outcome of this competition was a draw that year. Jennifer and Anastasia shared the second prize. Perhaps neither performance was quite deserving of a Gold Medal to the judges.
It was too fast for Jennifer Koh. She was trying to outdo Suwanai (obviously everyone heard her great version on the PBS documentary that was aired in the US in 1990, I was only about 9 or 10 years old and I heard that myself and was amazed). Trying too hard to win, and sounded like that instead of playing music. She obviously had Suwanai's version in her mind, and was trying too hard to beat that.
You cant hear the notes that Jennifer Koh plays at the beginning of this part. she played way to fast for her skill level here. Anastasia would have won if this performance was the decider.
My orchestra played the Sibelius concerto with Jennifer Koh today! It was insanely good. Her sense of phrasing is near the level of the famous soloists who are twice her age.
Jennifer Koh deserved to win Gold medal. If she was Japanese, I'm sure they would have handed her the gold medal without a problem. Mayuko's playing wasn't as exciting as Jennifer's. Notice how this japanese coverage of the competition only mentions Jennifer as American and not Korean-American.
I disagree. The judges were chosen from different countries so they had to make an unbiased decision. Jennifer's playing, although full of energy, actually sounds quite sloppy. And why put Mayuko in the equation? She was in the 2007 competition.
just saying, Mayuko's playing isn't as good as Jennifer's but she got the Gold medal no prob... Mayuko's a fine vioinist, but in my humble opinion, I much more prefer Jennifer's.
Mayuko is just OK. Too much teacher manipulation I think in the violin competition this year. It does not make sense they gave first prize to Mayuko in the violin but withheld first prize from Miroslav Kultishev in the piano competition. I was very impressed with Kultishev's videos here, and he is a great musician. In 1998, the teacher manipulation happened in the piano division when Kempf ended up getting third prize instead of a tie for first with Matsuyev.
Oh, I´m sorry... I confuse the date... A. Suwanai wons in 1990... So I don´t know now how win this one... Anyway, she (A. Suwanai) has a better tecnique, my opinion...
That´s why they both don´t win... The winner of this competition was A. Suwanai.
The second girl was to rush and use the whole forearm (in fact, A. Suwanai don´t)for the last part... And the first one, if I´m no wronge, I think she was not well stand... She was going to fall down if she moves more... (look her foot at 1:20) and sorry for my bad english...
Very difficult piece- I know from firsthand experience! But definitely well-worth the experience and she played very well. I wasn't as big a fan of the second violinist because she seemed to rush through the ending... but that's just my opinion as a fellow violinist who's played this. Thanks for posting the video!
i dont get it.. every time i see people play the last movement, they use their whole forearm for the semiquaver passages... why? they only need their wrist for a clean sautille. Wow if their gonna use regular forearm strokes at like 100mph on nervous energy alone, its no wonder if they end up feeling faint after that!
you could be right but mind that violinists need to have a sound as strong as the orchestra's one in those passages: they have to be heard by the audience and the only way to do that is to use their whole forearm
Is it just me or did the first girl skip a measure or a couple beats at the beginning? And is her bow a bit too tight? Or is that me too? Wow...crazy hair! I think I like the Asian girl's style better. Oh...but out of tune at the end...sad panda...
Yeah ive been playing the violin 4 like 5 years or 6 years now and let me tell you sumthin....THATS REALLY HARD!! especially the asians part. BUT the other chicks part was ALSO very hard because it has many shifts in positions and she plays in tune as well XD
I competed in that competition as well. I learned how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb on the violin a week before. I thought it would be enough but I was so wrong. I'm glad they didn't show the footage of me trying to play and the awkard silence that ensued.
Thank you-jonnyviolinist12-for the info. While watching,I keep wondering:Wow, they are so good alreay, I couldn't imagine how good that would be for the first prize. Philosophically,I'm an atheist, now I believe God exists necessarily.
Playing is great... but you guys are right.. those dresses... disgusting. Clearly the Asian girl is getting so involved in the music that it starts to change her tone production. The Russian girl has the piece down but she's so overconfident...
LOL, I thought that asian chick was just going to drop dead after that last note the way she was playing with so much intensity. And I do agree with the rest of you guys, those outfits look like they came outta a nightmare I had.
maybe the costume was fashionable back then. mshakhz, actually I went to a concert in which the soloist showed her middle finger many many times, to compensate for the weird stretches.
david oistrakh is better (obviously lol), but these girls are both quite stunning in their technique. their musicality/phrasing is somewhat lacking though
Everything was either forte or fortissimo. In the 16th note passages they played eveyrthing the same volume. Just little subtleties that oistrakh included but they did not. one of the girls was somewhat weaker in the upper range than the lower range. Just little things that make a big difference
Neither of them won the competition. Chebotareva from Russia and Koh form the USA both won the 2nd prize, and nobody was awarded the 1st prize in this year (1994).
The asian one... her playing is great and all but lol her hair is just atrocious... the way it shakes when she plays LOL and her dress is ridiculous... Black and... some kind of dark froggy green maybe??
Just letting you know, the guy thats talking is talking in Japanese...and Jennifer was WAY better! You could tell the orchestra was more active and hyper when she played!
Koh doesn't need to slow down. As for not being able to appreciate it when it's faster, tell that to Heifetz! He took everything considerably faster than normal tempo, and he's absolutely incredible and is as close to violin perfection as you can get.
meh I never really liked the original version of the 3rd movement...it always initially sounds like the player messed up and repeated the same passage another 3 times lol
Technically she's not that great, but her musical interpretation truly stands out among younger players if you listen to the archive clips. I think it more than makes up for her technique.
O...and that last part, that is the most frightful part...ooooo she pushed it to the extreme! raising the tempo like that! WOAH! I'm still in total awe after seeing it a second time. Although, the first messed up and I think that's what caused her to tie for 2nd. It was in the higher position on the E-string.
Freaking BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP I am in total awe. I want to say the F word so bad...that was amazing. I was totally enthralled, the passion, intensity in their playing...o my god, it was so beautiful! *standing ovation!* I want to hear the one who received first.
Fucking retarded that they rarely give out 1st. I think its cus they are cheap with the prize fund rather then anything else
