Even though some bands manage to pull it off well, not having a bassist can affect your sound greatly. He adds about 90% of the low end to the sound. That bass you hear is not coming from the guitars but the guitars and and the bass. It's pretty easy to here where the bassist comes in when there's a tapping part or lot's of leads going on.
