I've never seen any memorial like this. Old crash debris just laying around where it fell nearly fifty years before, and open to the public to poke around? I have to say it's pretty great as long as people refrain from picking everything apart.
The vertical stab is sitting on the other side of Elephant mt. Maine native now in the USAF, 15 years. Found a parachute canopy on one visit, also this is the tail section. Cockpit area is torn apart, you have to really look to find it.
ya they are pretty quiet. but more towards late friday night and saturday was when more and more people started comming. when we usually go in february for school vacation, the trails are loaded!
and you know what really sucks? i was talking to my dad and uncle up at the condo and they were saying that people are taking stuff from the site to sell at a scrap yard because scrap prices are so high....... soon their is not going to be a B-52 site anymore either from ***holes taking it all or from officials taking it away so they dont loose anything else:(
i ride in the Moosehead lake region, Greenvile, Rockwood, Shirley, North East Carry, Pittston farms, Forks. i have a condo in Squaw village in greenville,. its quiet their...
haha nice try, ya a 14 year old on a 2004 yamaha venture 600 with my 8 year old brother on the back tears up the trails in maine? Too bad the only ones that rip up the trails are the drunks on the F7's.... i bet you dont know a sled if it hit you in the face anyways. so what makes you think that i fuck up YOUR trails? and if you think IM one of those speed demons that does 95 mph+ guess again. and i acctually dont mind paying the $88 dollars because the registeration goes into my good hands.
Im just saying in general Massachusetts people have no respect for the trails. And I never rip up the trails on my F7. AND i wasnt saying rip up exactly. Last year i followed a group of massholes that went 15 on a wide flat trail. Flatlanders stick out in northern Maine just sayin
dude trust me, my family loves it up their so much. and just so you know we are the ones that stop on the side of the trail to pick up that branch that everyone ignores. and if you find a groud of "massholes" doing 15, stop critisizing, they probable have a little kid on his first ride or are teaching someone how to ride. so just pass them and get on with your life, were not bad people we are just trying to have fun!
I know you are brotha sorry about my criticism, i appreciate people like you. Anybody from new england is pretty chill. You get towards NY thats a new story. But if people are going 15 they should pull over, just sayin.
i deeply appreciate yout appolegy. well i just got home about 15 min ago from Maine! let me tell you the trails were awesome! and just so you know their was a crash where someone on a Polaris fusion 900 was going way to fast and blew a corner and went into a 10 foot ditch..... everyone was passing him laughing, not me, my crew and i stoped andhelped him right out of that ditch and made sure he was ok to still ride.
There was another mishap that had a similar failure (the vertical fin broke off). The other mishap the crew was at higher altitude and miraculously were able to fly the aircraft back for a safe landing.
There is a video of of it flying and landing safely with no vertical stabilizer called:
B-52 with no tail
Boeing has an article of the B-52 that landed with no tail safely, Google:
Even with No Tail, B-52 'Finest I Ever Flew,' Says Pilot
Thanks for posting this video. It's amazing that there was any survivors as low as they encountered their problems. I'm not sure which model of B-52 this is. Typically they only have four seats that eject upwards; two seats eject downwards. If there is any additional crew they have to bail out manually. The ejection seats were the old-fashioned type that did not have rockets so they didn't work very well at low altitude. The downward ejection seats were essentially a Hail Mary at low altitude.
people will take anything because of the common belief of "i want to have proof i was there" and "i want to have something to remember it by" and "this will be worth something some day". a lot of people are inconsiderate and will take things and that results in things being ruined for others.
I've done crash recovery on AF aircraft and they had us get every tiny screw and bolt and those were planes not as sensitive to technology as the B-52's were in the 60's. I also can't believe they left it laying where it crashed.
Not true...use google before you run your mouth otherwise your just a another cook on the internet.....and your speculation is at the expense of others who have lost loved ones... even ifit was 30+ years ago...
Thanks for posting this, I research aircraft wrecks in our mountains here in England, and have been over to a few Massachusetts wrecks, but never got as far as Maine, hopefully next time I can pay a visit to this site and pay my respects.Took a tour of Westover AFB where this aircraft came from on our visit last year, just saw C5s though no B52s, Thanks again!
actually what looked to you like the cockpit is the rearward-facing gunner's station on the tail-end of the jet, the vertical stab joins the fuselage directly above this area, the gunner would have been the first to know that something was wrong. after diposing of the huge 4-barrel 50 cals into the slipstream, he would have bailed out the rear in the jet in the hole he just created. I'll have to visit this place sometime. I crewed on a B-52 during the late 80's.
If you read the slate monument you would see that one of the survivors died exactly 30 years later. To the day. I went there last year and thought that was .... strange.
i think it was because it was in such a remote area they had to snowshoe in to rescue the survivors. the engines the injection seat and other items are at the Moosehead Rider's Clubhouse. it is now a memorial to remember those who lost their lives there.
OMG im from georgetown mass and i go snowmobiling up their all the time. ive been to the sigh many of times. i have also been to the Moosehead Rider's Clubhouse and seen the ejection seat and the motors. it is so amazing

Sad.
Bet the pilot felt terrible that he could eject when others could not.
Did he leave the crash landing to the co-pilot?

Why would all this still be there?..I thought the NTSB collect's all this for investigations? Why would they leave all this in the wild?
