It's called a style-parody, in which he isn't making a parody of any particular song, per-say, but rather the sound of that particular band. Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral are two of the defining albums of Nine Inch Nails, which is why you can hear similarities to Terrible Lie and Closer. Anyways, this song proves Al is musical genius, especially since not too many others have emulated Trent Reznor that well, or the other bands he has style-parodied.
