  • i swear softypapa, but i love your videos. when i was in the navy, i wished i received the freedom for exploring more, but i could not. and, now, how i yearn to i day visit japan and really take advantage of all its beauty. i had always had a connection to japan, even as a child.

  • @metube555 Thank you for your nice comments. They mean more to me than I can express easily with words and are one of the catalyst which makes me get up and out the door. I hope that you do have the chance to realize your dream of exploring in Japan. And if you ever find yourself in the area of Shizuoka then please let me know as it would be my sincere pleasure to take you along on an outing in the mountains. -Kurt :-)

  • さった峠は一里塚を左折し海岸に出て、波の合間を利用して、波打ち際の岩の間や浅瀬を通る道である。まさに親知らず子知らず(親不知、小不知)の難所であった。

  • That is Satta touge (さった峠、薩埵峠).

  • Wonderful. Your videos always put me in a different place.

  • Hello Cole, Glad you could come along! -Kurt :-)

  • thanks you for sharing some history of this city

  • Do you know what that "point" is called in Japanese? Does your wife? Her parents? Anyone? I'm very interested in finding out. That was a great piece of Japan trivia! Awesome history lesson. Thanks!!

  • I think that's 親不知, the same name as the one on Japan Sea.

  • Thanks.

But I hightly doubt it. I don't think the point is called Oyashirazu. I have to think the word "wasure" has to be in there somewhere (according to the translation.)

Still awaiting answer from the Man.

  • Hello TiramisuHappy, I'm sorry for my delay in response. I'm afraid that nobody in my family knows the answer and I only remember the English translation. I encountered this bit of history in a book or article about the old Tokaido highway and I'm afraid the the title or other source info has completely escaped my memory. All I'm left with is the story which impressed and moved me. I'm very sorry that I can't provide this info. If I find some local who knows I will certainly post. -Kurt :-)

  • What a bummer!

Next time you tell us a story as profound, emotional and significant as this one, we'd expect you to be able to back it up with additional info! ; D

I s'ppose I'm on my own then? Great.

  • TiramisuHappy: "Do you know what that "point" is called in ...."

    Possibly "minashigo" followed by misaki?

  • Is there actually such a place in or near Shimizu city in Shizuoka? Can you verify it? Or are you simply guessing? Because "Minashigo Misaki" sounds very plausible. Fits right in with the description of the place he was giving us. For those of you who don't know the meaning of the word "minashigo," it means "orphan."

  • TiramisuHappy: "Is there actually such a place in or near Shimizu ..."

    I was totally guessing. ^_^;

  • Interesting, man!

    Good job!

  • Fascinating! Thank you.

  • Interesting.

    Thanks for sharing.
