hey donthoneydont, agree wholeheartedly with you what an awesome version of one of my old favourites love it, get up & do the ole good rocknroll to this?????? cherrrrrr
Cooke's version and Page's version are so totally different from each other that to the compare the two is basically ridiculous. They might as well be two completely separate songs, considering the overall tone of each. Obviously, you can prefer one over the other, but no version is intrinsically better. I personally dig Sam's version because it makes me feel alive, Page's version because it makes me feel sad. They're both damn good songs.
@dchern well, one can say anything. i can say the cow jumps over the moon, or that the rich don't need to pay taxes, they're just for poor people...or i can say i'm going to quit drinking, that's why i'm going to have 12 more martinis, but none of that stuff is so... i love Sam Cooke, i literally cried when i was a teen and heard that he died. but there's no way this version is superior to Patti Page's
@mccurryburg Wow...you MUST smoke crack then...haha...kidding you. We all have our opinions, as strange as they may seem. To me, my humble opinion says, this version blows PP's version like so-called Muslim terrorists blow a meat market...
For a real kick(and laugh),first play Patti Page's version of this, then Sam's.Also, for a further musical cleansing, play any "traditional"version of "Carolina Moon",and then follow it with Thelonious Monk's high octane version ..One of the great contributions of Black American musicians was to give the American Songbook the shaking up that it needed!

Exactly this record I once owned. Sam Cooke, one of the classic feelingful and true hearted singers it appeared.
