I think the words you are looking for a hue (color,) value (lightness) and chroma (intensity). The background colors are less saturated due to atmospheric attenuation so they have less value and less chroma, but they may be a darker hue than the foreground.
As an artist, the rule we follow is that things in the distance are less clear with less detail and the closer items are clearer and better defined. Lighter and darker are a matter of contrast. Close or far the contrast rule is simple...Dark against light and light against dark. Hope this helps with the words.
