This is Heifetz's arrangement of a Grigoras Dinicu composition..and Menuhin, while injecting some of his style, played it with all due respect to Heifetz and Dinicu..and Menuhin got all the respect in return..
still lacks the feeling the composer [Dinicu] ment; Dinicu's performances here on youtube are less valuble, being filmed mainly in restaurants or at events;
heifetz brings it to brahms & chopin, thus losing the idea of this totally different dance
For whom this may concern,Menuhin is under-rated in his contributions to the world of violin.
He was a brilliant explorer of history, philosophy and culture, and an ambassador to the East. His book Violin is a great contribution to our world. I suggest anyone who has anything bad to say about Lord Menuhin first devotes his/her life to this instrument with an open mind, practices yoga daily and writes many a book before getting on his/her high horse and saying who's 'better'. Keep an open mind.
you can tell he's been working with a romanian teacher(enescu)...because the style in which he plays is very appropriate and close to the traditional manner of playing romanian folklore on the violin
Menuhin through Enescu, Oistrakh through Boulanger, Heifetz, through Dinicu, and Perlman´s grandparents being born in Romania. All of them spoke Romanian, and had romanian and jewish soul. What can you do? Romanians just do stuff better.
@SteauaBucuresti Perhaps they do...but let's not discount that this is the 20th century, and tradition lives on in different ways now. We'll see in 100 years where the best violinist are coming from. Ysaye wasn't Romanian, nor Paganini or Vivaldi... La revaderra!
"hora staccato" was played for many years as intro to john b. gambling's early morning radio show. he had a small orchestra to play it and referred to it as the smallest symphony orchestra in the world.
this is the best version interpreted by a foreigner that I've ever heard on youtube (and I'm at about the 50th different interpretation so far...), but no one plays this better than a Romanian (Grigoras Dinicu himself or Liviu Prunaru)
I think that a most sensible comment by "rawautube". If only that principle was applied to all,, we would see much less of the tedious partisan bigotry. Many thanks for posting.
Although the greats all have something to offer I still think it is ok to say one is better than another for certain pieces. That doesn't mean one has to shut out the others.
I hate it when I hear the old arguement of who is better;Heifetz,Menuhin,Perlman,Oistrakh...They all have some thing that the others don't have so I really pitty those that only listen to one of them.
Another marvel from Menuhin's youth--age 14. Never heard it played better.
It's true that that Dinicu gives it more of a gypsy flavor and audaciousness. But for superlative technique combined with musicianship, give me this recording anytime.
@cjh37878 I love Menuhin he is a virtuoso of the violin. But Heifetz's playing this piece … THE PERFECTION OF PERFECTION, period! Let the public decide: In youtube; Jascha Heifetz plays Hora Staccato
I'm 99% sure that little boy in the picture is Nigel Kennedy.

I prefer Heifetz's because it's more whimsical, but Menuhin still kicks my ass...
