Google the Wright Flyer. The elevators were initially on the nose to lift the aircraft. Once wings could achieve greater lift, they were eventually moved to the tail along with the vertical stabilizer.

why does that plane lookk backwards? ...... wouldn't that tail looking thing in the front of the plane kinda mess up the air being moved by the propeller?
