  • I find that manufactured flint and steels are much more efficient.

  • vikings... no. but a very good video.

  • Mind ur own biz,I was talkin to Jeff,I been watching his vids for over 2yrs,all of them weather I like them or not.I'm sure he don't mind a neg comment or 2 instead of people kissing his ass all the time.I talked to Jeff before telling him how nice the g36 was.now that's one of his main carry guns.mind ur own biz.

  • Jew-twine xd

  • can't wait to see the friction fire video.

    I always liked common sense.

there is a lot of common sense here. I don't get it why so many people disliked it. it was not offensive or annoying. it was long but hey, that's why people tune into cutlerylover.

@G36Jeff if you didn't like it why'd ya watch it?

  • Also when buying lighters for survival... for gods sake buy Bics. The lighter that is shown in this video will probably brake before the fuel runs out.

  • Jeff man I like the videos but dang man u rant and rant and rant about everything.u constantly get off topic and just babble.dude focus.like this video.25min of babble... U start off talking about fire then u pick up a tin of Montana and start talking about mints.dude shut up already

  • @G36Jeff Go masturbate with a cactus.

  • @G36Jeff man its your choice to watch the videos or not, I watch these videos For Jeff's off topic talks :P

  • A VERY HOT SUBJECT!!

  • The term "sparkling water" just doesn't make sense anymore.

  • @zingzangzap my zippo still worked after I dropped it in water

  • I am quite the same as you Jeff i find fire interesting.

  • im sorry cutlerylover i must disagree strike anywhere matches are very common at least they are here in ca.. and extremelly cheap

  • On the fire department we use fuses or road flares the work in any weather condition and burn hotter the anything else you can get them in different burn times.

  • Pressure is raised, not dropped. Dropping pressure leads a system towards a vacuum, higher pressure means more force & energy is spread over a smaller area, increasing the temperature within the chamber of the piston.

  • i have never seen or had altoids in my life

  • So true :) good vid might bring some people back down to reality

  • i don't know if you realized jeff, but a fire piston is the exact same mechanism that you find in a diesel engine! pretty cool.

  • red fire bird matches are vary good strike anywhere matchesand easy to find in alberta

  • @HotDawgStand1WHOOOO Alberta me to WHOOOOO

  • @theedwardgo north or south or centeral

  • @HotDawgStand1 central. by Edmonton

  • @theedwardgo sweet by red deer

  • well jeff lighters are good except when wet you need to dry them and like you said can run out of fuel

  • Very sobering video. This is one reason people like you so much cutlerylover. You tell it like it is w/o a "I got a big gun and a big knife. I can do it all" attitude. You are real and the best advice I can give people is to practice with your equipment before you head into the woods and or have to use your weapon in an emergency. This might save your life.

  • why no zippo

  • How important is it that the striker is carbon steel and not stainless steel?

  • Are there really that many comments discussing the fire piston as the end all be all of fire making?

  • fire isn't only about cooking food or for lighting, it keeps predators and insects away it it also helps a lot with morale, darkness in the middle of a forest while beeing completly alone, far away from civilization kinda fucks with your mind.

  • The ONLY fire starter that I rely on to save my life: a lighter. But a lighter is no good soaking wet. So put it in a ziplock bag.

  • @iksnyzrog ur a dumbass, what if it runs out of fuel or breaks

  • @Jay5355 then i'll use one of my other three lighters... pretty simple really

  • What happens when the lighter runs out and you lose your firesteel?

  • @VeronicasMidget Many lighters can still make sparks when they have run out. Just choose the right one.

  • very good info and i completely agree. all my fire kits include bic lighters with firesteel backups.

  • i use flint and steel all the time . . . to grief my friends houses

  • you have no idea what are you talking about

  • I keep an empty lighter so I can my a spark with it and then light something with it

  • @azazaz206 why don't you keep a full lighter so if it works then you have a flame and if it doesn't then you have a spark??

  • You remind me of my dad, haha nice videos man.

  • sure... baggie of "drier lint"

  • @mriceman0619 pass it this way

  • all you need is a "body" and a "plunger"

  • gotta get me some jew twine...;D

  • you used to use those baggies for five sacks?

  • first 45 sec was the best

  • English flint is the best.

  • Bueller? Bueller? Low light picture never changes. Tried to stay awake. zzzzzzzzzzz

  • Talk about your opion on maryjawana

  • @cutlerylover quartz strikes sparks too

  • i used to go camping but then i took an arrow threw the knee thes bastered zoo loos

  • lightning is static electrical, not pressure related. and the fire piston is an increase in pressure, not a drop. it is basically using the diesel principal

  • @traxxaslover123 very true. noticed the same thing.

  • Comment removed

  • pressure rises in the chamber

  • har har the baggies are drug baggies har har har.

  • Having been a smoker (former) for 10 years, and growing up in rural Washington state, being outside and being wet and long way from vehicles or houses, having a lighter can make fire making fast and simple. Bic brand lighters can't be beat. The adjustable lighters tend to leak fluid over time and are prone to breaking in backpacks. The Bic lighters, even if they seem out of fluid, can be warmed in the hand or pocket for a few more lights.

  • haha, it looked like one of the bags had little pot leaves on it. wait a sec, it is a drug bag! only take the essentials, fire and weed!

  • So what your saying is the stranded hikers will be saved by the smoker they all gave shit to. lol

  • The firepiston doesnt work the same way as lightning does. Lightning is just the static electricity created by the friction between clouds that shoots to the eart. The firepiston just puts air under pressure and so increasing the pressure and so the energy. The energy is then rapidly released in the form of heat.

  • I like the reality check, people need that, including me. Thanks for the post Jeff.

  • The correct word for yourself, as someone interested in fire but not to the point of obsession, is pyrophile.

  • i just would really try surviving just for curiosity and fun ,it just looks cool and entertaining as a hobby o just to try it once

  • You have really SPARKED my interest, Jeff... ;D

  • @DackIsBack I C WHUT U DID THARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • By the way, in my "kit" I have lighter, matches, firesteel. Have to have multiple options, it only makes sense when you can plan things...

  • Agreed, fire making is something that you have to keep up on like anything that requires skill. Do people really watch those shows and think cause they watched them they can do it? Wow, some people...lmao

  • What i found out when playing with a bic lighter, is that if you take that flint inside and grab it with pliers, it works just like that Firesteel thingy, get a knife and strike against it. It will create a lot of sparks

  • Jew Twine...

  • jew twine haha!!!! jeff you just made my morning

  • Big Blue through to the SuperBowl!!!! Giants baby!!!!

  • I know what to do i was in boy scouts!

  • Comment removed

  • when i saw a survival video I knew that fire piston would come out lol jeff loves his fire piston

  • all you need to make a fire.... flint, a striker, and dryer lint

  • J-E-W jew... a jew

    bless you

  • Very interesting and informative.

  • It's the Jeff necessity (sing, sing, sing), Jeff necessity (sing, sing, sing),Jeff necessity (sing, sing, sing).

  • Jeff. I would really love some bow drill fire demonstration.

  • best option: flamethrower

  • Jeff, what you said about DAVE CANTERBURY (that he would also carry a lighter and use that before trying to light a fire with a ferro-rod) is true.

For example in this video: watch?v=HlpdmhGCgT0

Dave shows his altoids-fire-kit (Minutes 12 to 15) and says there, that he always uses his lighter first!

  • So your a pothead too? I heard your an alcoholic from another channel on youtube.

  • you can use the flint to strike the ferrocerium rod... a sharp piece of broken glass will work, too ;).

  • I think being a jack of all trades is BETTER than being a master of one... Because the MORE you learn about ONE thing the LESS you learn about everything else...

  • Why would you put a lighter and a fire steel in some one else's pocket?

  • I prefer lasers to start fires. >=)

  • The first 7 mind im staring at that mesh think.wtf is that...? It hurts my eyes

  • way to burst our bubbles, lol

  • Ads jeff? C'mon now

  • what about those magnesium sticks?

  • Lightning is caused similarly to how static electricity is. instead of your slippers and your grandpa, its between the atmosphere and the earth not a drop in pressure lol

  • those baggies look like the ones i use for weed thats a 20 boyy

  • @671chiburi Just imagine that in a perfect world, those baggies were used for something before they were used for your weed.

  • That English Flint looks really nice.

  • Bullshit VRs are welcome.

  • survival in the northern US is quite easy. berries and mushrooms are good enough already. I did for 2 weeks by myself and it was not as hard as everyone says

  • brunette goddess

  • Ooii

  • Another thought validating Jeff's idea is, the woodsman and mountain men from the olden days who lived in the wild would go to trading posts to get supplies. Food supplies, seeds, black powder. They didn't survive entirely by themselves. The first settlers needed more food and the native indians shared their food with them. Indians had communities and cultivated fields of corn and berries and such. They discovered maple syrup, root beer, pop corn.

  • watch swibo6 hes a guy on youtube who actually knows how to survive in the wild.

  • I keep a bear grylls survival guide in my wallet thats always with me, the guide came with my bear grylls scout knife not saying im relying on it i fell in a frozen river up to my knees and couldnt start a fire for crap, keeping a lighter with me all the time now

  • @cutlerylover you're more of a knife-o-maniac or a blade-o-phile than a pyromaniac....

  • In the wild, there is not much sugar and not much fat. So it is hard to get the calories for energy. In reality it is very difficult to last long in the wild, especially in winter. And if you get a migraine headache or the flu and you are living in the wild, you will really have a tough time. We pretty much take aspirin and a warm dry bed and comforter for granted. In a sense we are surviving in the wild right now, but our forefathers invented electricity and houses and stuff to better survive.

  • One other item to consider carrying is a small bottle of zippo lighter fluid. Put a few drops on your birds nest and it makes it a lot easier to light. Having a peanut lighter is a good idea since the seal doesn't let the lighter fluid evaporate and they are so tiny. I agree with Jeff, keep many bic style lighters in your kits.

  • I don't think it takes all skill to survive I think it's mostly t a mental mind set and the will to survive and the people who have that will thrive

  • ginger altoids are the best...

  • it's really friggin hard to start a fire with a firesteel (for me anyway)

  • I would survive about 20 minutes XD Jeff you could survive at least 5 days probably a week.

  • I've been on trial survival runs a number of times, the key is for the first couple of times to be somewhere that is fairly close to civilization, because in all likelihood the first time will not go as well as you think, but the only way to know for sure if you can make it is to try

  • Have you done a video with what you'd have in a bug out bag.

  • starts @ 6:50.

  • It's actually a huge increase in pressure, and that's not quite how lightning works..

  • @kingmigget Lightning is static electricity. As rain falls through the air, it scrubs electrons from the air sort of like rubbing a balloon on your head and eventually the electron build up is to high to hold so it is released as a lightning bolt. You can't have lightning without rain. That is how I understand it.

  • @Dasdfjkl that's entirely inaccurate..

  • @kingmigget What is your explanation?

  • @Dasdfjkl You can have lightning without rain. And you're saying that if I rub a balloon on my head long enough there will be lightning.... :)

  • Great video. Also the first 3 methods require two hands to make fire. A lighter only needs one good hand. If you're injured in one arm or hand it may be difficult to make fire with the first 3 methods. I would also choose a windproof lighter for survival purposes. One lighter will last a long time.

  • I live in the woods and I always carry a Bic, several Bic when out on the trail. I'm far more likely to be caught out in the woods with a Bic than my little suvival tin. Bic's are lighter in weight than most of the other fire starting tools when weight is important. Bics just do not have the glamour that these other methods have.

  • Jeff, you said you couldn't survive for more than 2 or 3 days? you can do that without food water or shelter in most places, except for like the desert/snowplains...?

  • when it comes to fires, i cheat my ass off with a 6lb fire log. :)

  • I have an interest in fire too, I have a 4 year degree in fire science.

  • im a pyro and i LOVE THIS!

  • :20 -:40 it is like that

  • yeah thats real good, ask for jew twine to make fire.... 0 . 0

  • I "bushcraft" on weekends a mile walk from home. Safe and still lets me build some skills. I feel like id last a day or two. :P Added stress and stuff. Id be pretty screwed.

  • @NJMevec2 try lasting a weekend!

  • where do you get those little bags from?

  • @outdoorsman310 theres a nice gentleman who stands on my corner who has them

  • @cutlerylover haha wow

  • @cutlerylover lol

  • 720p loads the fastest =.= da eff...

  • sorry to correct you, but the small pieces of iron are oxidizing which heats the small pieces of iron causing them to glow making the sparks you see. this is also how hand warmers work!

  • @topguntin well yes with all fire you need oxogyn

  • @cutlerylover oxygen * :)

  • Jeff ! Can u please talk about weed ! Your thoughts will be very intersting to listen to !

  • and you used to have a bag of WEEEEEED

  • Fire pistons only work at low altitudes as well. None of the tribes where I am in Canada used it for said reason.

  • @BOB10011001 interesting

  • good info...do a video of making a fire with these..

  • Jeff your a good man to admit to all that

  • Jeff a good example of "bushcraft" opposed to "survival" would be the way cody lundene lives

  • i like listening to you when im doin my homework.. haha :DD

  • Starts @ 6:30

  • @CopingWithTheTimes god's work

  • @CopingWithTheTimes no it doesn't. it starts at the 00:00. like every other video

  • great video jeff, appreciate it--very informative =)

  • I hate that people claims that he does drugs

  • @linkinpark491 its because he did when he was a kid... and weed is not a drug, its a plant.

  • @gotnobrain22 no its a drug

  • @zunedog31 no your a fucking faggot if you really think that. you can't overdose, you can't get addicted. its way safer then alcohol. don't believe everything the government says.....

  • Oh, so Jeff is the the Pyro... somebody get him an axe.

  • friction fires are always fun to make!

  • I'v found that birch bark will start a fire very quickly even when wet! I found this out on my own little bush crafting experience last week. Just rip it up into little strips and make a birds nest and it will start with a few sparks. You should make a video using this to start a fire.

  • If you do drugs I won't watch you and I'll unsub

  • @Futuristics7 Dude he does not do drugs. He had a incounter with pot a long time ago. Watch some of his ealry videos

  • @linkinpark491 haha an "incounter with pot"?? way to tiptoe around that one. hahaha the kid smoked the herb :) nothing wrong with that. just chill and smoke one. One Love.

  • @Futuristics7 How is that related to anything?

  • Nothin like splitting twine for kindling(:

  • I would have to disagree , the fire piston is far more reliable. It works on the exact same principal as the diesal engine ie compression it will always give an ember, as long as you can maintain a good seal. The flint and steel is the more difficult to master. Although i undertand where your are coming from, I would agree lighters a usefull. Fire steel and fire pistons are the top 2 long term. I love your vids may they long continue.

  • @CBRsix do you own a fire piston? If not buy one and try to use it

  • @cutlerylover

    LOL GET OWNED

  • @cutlerylover i do have a fire piston and dont have trouble with it, why would i make a comment without having used one, ligthers are ok but they dont last fuel doesnt last forever, where as if you have solid bushcraft skills and know how to maintain a fire piston it will last a long time. Considering i follow your vids and enjoy them i have to say your reply reads as condisending , something i would not expect from you!.

  • @CBRsix sicnje your good at making fires with them video it and post it as a video response then make a fire using a lighter, there is no disputing the fact lighters are easier and faster to get fire

  • @cutlerylover im talking about survival long term, maybe i didnt make that clear. I dont dispute just pulling out a lighter to make fire is easy , but fire piston has the legs on lighter requiring liquid or gas fuels.

  • @CBRsix The problem with the fire piston is, it's mechanical integrity needs to be perfect. If you can't get that perfect compression, you're shit out of luck. The strikers do not have issues like the fire piston, as long as material is left they work.

  • @CBRsix will it still give me an ember if i jam a wet sock in it?

  • @Trigcure maybe you could jam one in your mouth if thats all you have to say.

  • I thus far have not been succesful with the fire bow, I have gotten to the point of smoke with rubbing 2 sticks together, but then it started raining and I called it a day. went inside and soaked my blistered hands. LOL so you are not alone with the fail on the fire bow Jeff. look forward to seeing more.

  • I agree 100%. I have in my EDC bag alone 3 lighters, a firesteel, 2 trioxane bars, and a lighter on my person. I only occasionally smoke cigars though. oh yeah and I have a WD40 pen for other things but it would al
