The storyline of the movie is based on recollections of those that dealt with the central character.  The character's driving need to live a simplistic life bereft of materialistic benefits was central to the story. Watch the move, read the lyrics, and compare. Then watch MTV, Bravo, E! etc and compare the analysis.
