I am at work, and I am secretly on youtube, and instead of caring about the risk of being fired, I am secretly having chills while listening to this. A masterpiece!
@davidpintol Have you taken the trouble to listen to the 2nd part (from 2:55)? That is Mantilla De Feria. Ever considered that somebody else might play De Lucia's compositions?
sounds terrible. he should practice more or listen to Vicente Amigo, Paco de Lucia, Nino Miguel, Rafael Riqueni, Enrique de Melchor, and a long, long etcetera... this guy would be on the bottom of any list of flamenco players from Spain, if at all.
@purebk just warning you guys over there who think this man is top of the top, he is not. And he must have some psychological problem in his head because he hasnt aproved his guitar playing in 40 years. So dont get fooled and pay big time money for this guy to perform in your city or take lessons from him... its a waste of time and money. Just come to Spain, you can start anywhere, there are fine guitar players in Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao, but then come to Andalucia, end of story.
@mtkaala You bet I will. I am very busy right now preparing performances but some time along January or February, I will post something specially for you. And Pena-envy... well, calling my criticizing like that is giving too much credit to Pena and envy would mean I would like to be in his shoes and I definetly would not, rather not! Watch for instance Vicente Amigo, brilliant technique in all aspects. Pena must have feelings, and do not doubt that, I only observe totally obsolete technique.
thaTS just a beautiful performance , what a soundm and the musicallity especially , dynamic contrast on the tremlo in alegrias and mantilla , that was just great , godh i have to put that piece to memory,, pure brilliance is paco pena
Y2H, Paco is among the greatest guitarists but yes you can compare him to other guitarists. Paco de Lucia is better in some aspects but not in others. You can call him the king of fast scales but that does not mean that his tone is the best or that his expressiveness is the best. Have you ever heard him playing a slow piece and making it sound really expressive? With a suit profund tone? There are guitarists that are better than him from that perspective.
I just could agree more with Jeffgothro. Paco Pena must be the best of the "traditional" flamenco players if I may call it that. Closely followed by Juan Serrrano and Juan Martin. Of course there are Paco de Lucia, Nino de Puro, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito etc who are all amazing players who are at the very top of flamenco playing in their style. I just wish that one day any of the above guys would come to New Zealand for a concert.
Thank you paco, Ive watched this at least 40 times now, it still brings tears to my eyes you and your woman friend are unreal, her looks are unmached by any woman and so is your playing, I look forward and cant wait to purchace you CD's, thanks!
I'm crying right now, and that aint easy to make do....that woman he's with is a goddesss, and the playing is off the hook, just unreal amazing, i never heard anything like this, he is doing stuff that shouldnt be possible. Seriously, its making cry, thats how beautiful it is.
Paco Pena is obviously one of the very best, and there's great value in keeping alive the traditional roots of flamenco. But if everybody would only play traditional falsetas, flamenco would not be the living music that it is. At some point in the past these traditional falsetas were new and innovative.
Typical Paco: absolutely a compas and - increasingly rare - the real thing. The alegrias is entirely traditional falsetas, which you will recognise if you have listened to the flamenco greats. As for Mantilla de Feria, a little quiz: who is it by and how do you tune the guitar to play it? Failure to answer the second question correctly has resulted in some of the most excruciating flamenco moments I have ever experienced.
PLEASE DONT READ THIS! In 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough" and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after.
