I have known graduate students of African descent who wanted to devote their careers to understanding and reducing racism. I had a colleague whose uncle died of alcoholism; he devoted his career to alcoholism research. Growing up in the South I saw shocking things, but still I can't feel genuine empathy because I didn't grow up a target of racism. You may not agree, but search on.. Michelle Obama is proud, but I am ashamed...to see my take on her and racism.
