It's important to hear what's coming through the mix - not just what's coming out of your instrument. The headphones let him hear what the microphones are picking up.

Thanks for your comment, now i got it. It just confused me a little bit ´cause i´m not used to see jazzmusicians wearing headphones.

Usually the ones who wear headphones are the drummers - especially the ones who play fast rock music or difficult pop/funk/hip hop/r´n´b-stuff - ´cause they use a click track, which is often used in songs that are not as open to improvisation as jazz is.
