Wow, that's impressive. You played that so smooth and effertless. I just downloaded that sam song on Youtube too. I just play by ear. I guess my ear wasn't too good because watching your video, I missed a few things. Oh well. I'll have to check out more of your music. In a couple of weeks I'll be seeing one of the greatest Beatles cover bands ever, called Rain. Check them out on Youtube.
Beautifully played and helps to demonstrate what a great bass player Paul McCartney is. His bass-line is a song in itself. It pushes the song along rhythmically and ties it together melodically and harmonically. The man has such a great musical imagination. At the time George complained that it was too busy but in later years stated that it made the song! Try playing it in the simplest way possible and the song sounds good but ordinary. The melody is so tied up with Paul's bass part!
Fabulous! I always considered this the best bass part of ANY song every done. I heard the George thought that it was too busy for the song. Great bass - poor opinion imho. What a track. Well done. You know your stuff.
Paul did not use the Hofner on Abbey Road, it was pretty much retired after the rooftop session in Let it Be. All the photos available from the Abbey Road sessions show him with the Rick bass and there was also a righty Fender Jazz Bass George played on a few tracks, like Golden Slumbers. There was also a LEFTY Jazz bass Paul is pictured with during the White album sesions, as well as the Fender VI bass they had around. Mutes make the Rick bass sound Hofner-like sometimes, Paul used the mutes.
I just put GHS flatwound on mine and its for a 34 to 35 inch scale but when I put them on the strings were too tight against the neck... Do u know what I would be doing wrong for this to happen?
@hofnerbass24 I don't know exactly. If you feel too tight, I think you may use light gauge strings. LaBella 760FX are extra light gauge (039 056 077 096).
@tinseth7 My Rickenbacker 4001 is odd enough because it is built of C64 body and V63 pickups. I bought it at about $1500. It is cheaper than original C64 or V63. Anyway I'm satisfied with it.
nice job, but I tried to play along..I'm tuned A440, you must be tuned a 1/4 or 1/2 step flat...It's easier to get those slinky swoop bass notes....what are you tuned to?I know it's not 440..also,.what year Rick is dat??I haven't seen the dot marker necks before..I use a '73 4001 and it has the triangle pearl fret markers..must be older than mine..keep rockin' !!
@putzengiler I don't remember what was the reference pitch. I might have tried to tune to the original track, or just out of tune... My Rick's body was made in 2009. It is a reissue of 1964 Rickenbacker 4001S.
I would tend to vote against the use of the Hofner. While it did come back into the fold for the Let It Be film, to everything that I have ever read, for recording he still relied on the Rick and on a Fender Jazz bass(4 string) on some White Album tracks.
@pr10s This song is from Abbey Road, and he used Hofner on this song, most of the Abbey Road Medley so far I know, the Rickenbacker was used in the medley also, but only 3 songs: Mean Mr. Mustard, The End, Her Majesty (there's only one bass note in Her Majesty, since it got cut off from Mean Mr. Mustard). He used the Rick on Here Comes the Sun and Come Together and some more song from part 1, I think. However, Fender Jazz (6-string) was played by George on Golden Slumbers and Carry That Weight.
Sorry, not trying to be an asshole. This is really good and it may seem like a small point but I think it's probably important, especially for people with shitty equipment.
This is the best of this ilk I've seen, kudos, but there's one thing that all these videos have in common, which is the reliance on the lower frets of the d and g strings. This sounds really good but in the mid and late sixties getting those sounds was all about heavy palm mute, and most importantly, playing D and G string octave notes high on the neck on the lower strings instead of using the lower frets of the higher strings. It's a really important detail/nuance that people seem to ignore.
@smithjedediah I agree with you. I mean using the higher frets of the lower strings leads to good sound. I'm gonna try and try to balance good sound with efficient movement.
Great job. You helped me with a few spots I was missing, and it's right on now. From what I know Paul played his Hofner on that song and most of Abbey Road. Anyway, I really like your C64, it's beautiful. I have the C64S, it's the one I wanted since I seem to be into Macca more with Wings. I have T & I flats on it (Macca had Maxims by Rickenbacker, but don't make em anymore) and had a high gain standard 4003 pickup put in it so it would have the Wings sound and look. Happy thumpin man!!!!
This is one of the greatest bass-lines ever. Most bassists do bass lines that, yes, you can admire the technicality, and yes, it sounds great, but there's "something" different about this. It tells its own story in a way. Sounds clichéd but I think it's true.
Excellent playing. Perhaps the best take on Something's bass I've seen. Your fingering shows an economy of motion that I think characterizes Paul's playing. Other's transcription of this piece require more movement up and down the neck and I suspect are not true to what Paul played originally. Only one thing - I was always told that Paul used the Hofner on this piece. However, your Rick sounds very true to the original. Have you tried it on your Hofner CT? If so, how did it sound?
I was also told that Paul used the Fender Jazz Bass on this song. I cannot judge which is correct though I've never tried with the Hofner and the Jazz Bass.
