I'm not a fan of Nascar, but they're doing 200 mph. At that speed, anything can happen. They also follow very closely to each other, called drafting, so that they catch less air and are more aerodynamic and will eventually gain more speed. My dad watches Nascar, but I find it kinda boring. Even if they were doing all kinds of crazy turns, racing is going to have its accidents.
Shane Hmeil was probably high at the time, but hes been clean for a long time now heedfully he makes a recovery from his USAC/Sprint car crash and walks again.
This was NOT the biggest crash in NASCAR history, the biggest one happened back in 1960 at Daytona Coming out of turn four 37 of 68 cars got into a massive wreck where at least six cars get on their roofs. Amazingly, evryone walked away from it.

@RickOFtheJames Like you, I too grew up on Nascar. Loved it when I was a kid. But I broadened my horizons because Nascar simply no longer interested me. Going in circles for an ungodly amount of laps was just no longer going to cut it. Then I discovered F1. It gives you everything Nascar does and so much MORE. I'm an American so I know how F1 isn't the most popular thing here but once the U.S. Grand prix opens in Texas I'm sure people will become more familiar with it.

F1 is vastly superior to Nascar in every "whicha way." Do not complain about the rate of lead changes in F1. A leader in an F1 race clearly was the most prepared and has a great team behind him. Not to mention his driving skill and prowess to achieve and maintain the lead. The leader in a F1 race is leader for a reason, not by luck like you often see in Nascar. F1>Nascar.

I like all forms of auto racing and will watch whatever is on, there are different skill sets that come with different racing disciplines, and it's ok to like F1 and NASCAR and Indy Car and Motocross and Baja etc..

@RickOFtheJames Like you, I too grew up on Nascar. Loved it when I was a kid. But I broadened my horizons because Nascar simply no longer interested me. Going in circles for an ungodly amount of laps was just no longer going to cut it. Then I discovered F1. It gives you everything Nascar does and so much MORE. I'm an American so I know how F1 isn't the most popular thing here but once the U.S. Grand prix opens in Texas I'm sure people will become more familiar with it.

Come on guys let's be real. Everyone watches nascar for the wrecks. Not for watching them go in circles for 4 hours.
F1 is vastly superior to Nascar in every "whicha way." Do not complain about the rate of lead changes in F1. A leader in an F1 race clearly was the most prepared and has a great team behind him. Not to mention his driving skill and prowess to achieve and maintain the lead. The leader in a F1 race is leader for a reason, not by luck like you often see in Nascar. F1>Nascar.

@Kingofforever Each to their own. I grew up on NASCAR so that's what I watch, if I grew up somewhere where F1 was popular I'd watch that. I like all forms of auto racing and will watch whatever is on, there are different skill sets that come with different racing disciplines, and it's ok to like F1 and NASCAR and Indy Car and Motocross and Baja etc..

its not so much for the interest in the race, just the overall environment. you really have to appreciate power in cars over speed or cornering ability. if you haven't been to a nascar race you wouldn't understand.

If F1 is better than nascar... Then why when I search "nascar drivers in F1" on google... It only shows listings for F1 drivers switching to nascar?? I could be wrong... But why drive a VW Beetle when you could be driving a Ferarri???? Just something to think on.

I am a bit biased here, however, it seems to me that Nascar is more about technical superiority than driving prowess. Obviously there are some driving tactics involved, but very limited.
