ROFL what the hell?! You mean to tell me that the "real" Strider was making that hysterical "pap pap pap" all these years and we Americans got the silenced version? That's nuts.
This is one of my all-time favorite childhood games - and there's no doubt in my head that I would have thought Strider was retarded if he was making that noise all day. I thought Strider was a 'chill bro' - this is totally devastating.
Hey Toneman, I'm hoping you might be able to help me.
I've got WinX68K up and running, and I can play any game, except Capcom games! Final Fight, DaiMakaiMura and Strider start to load, but I quickly get returned to the command prompt. Ah, I found some info. It seems as though my bios roms are not the correct ones (even though they run all non-Capcom games). I just wish that I could find these roms (broken links). Oh well.
Fun times. The X68000 had AWESOME ports. See Gradius, Gradius II, ... Thunder Force II... Well, they're mostly Konami, except for that last one. But still.
Plus, it may or may not have the definitive version of oft remade Castlevania (Although that has a definitive itself on PS1)...
THIS GAME SHOULD GET TONS OF AWARDS FROM E3 !!! BEST GGRAPHICS BEST GAME BEST CINEMATICS BEST .. BEST... BEST OF THE BEST !!! oh yeah I'M NOT JOKING !!!
Yes, however, the CPS is more powerful than X68000 -max number of sprites-: X68K: 128 CPS: 256 -Background tile layers- X68K: 2 CPS: 3 -colors- X68K: 256 out of 65,536 CPS: 2048 out of 65,536 with that said, most early CPS games dont push the hardware all the way, so X68K can do CPS games near-perfectly.
I find it funny how Strider shouts everytime he uses his sword. Sometimes whenever I played the Genesis version I would tap the attack button to make it sound like he's singing a military marching song or a symphony of sorts.
Simply INCREDIBLE!!!!... I had no idea that the Sharp X68000 ever existed until today!! I was always a C64 and Amiga user and fan back in the day, but it seems that along with the Acorn Archimedes that the Amiga had a superior rival in the form of the X68000!!!
I remember when I learned of the X68000 in 2002, I was blown away. It played so many awesome arcade ports which put to shame the versions that were on the Megadrive, Amiga, SNES and TG16.
The Japanese had the coolest machines, like FM Towns and X68000.
Oh most definitely! If this port is anything to go by it would have wiped the floor back then and it did but only in Japan it seems which is a huge shame!
So here was me in 1990 thinking that my Amiga was the most powerful thing available for the time and not knowing that the X68000 existed which i find really strange because i constantly buying a magazine called ACE that covered "every" system and technological aspects of that time, so why that wasn't mentioned is beyond me?
I remember the FM Towns though, it was a very powerful CD based system with souped up versions of Dungeon Master, It Came From the Desert and i suppose a plethora of its own independent Japanese titles :)
Actually one of the magazines i was buying had a competition to win one, but since the Magazine was a British publication and we always seem to receive it a month later, i could not enter to try and win it :(
Contrary to what many of you think this is essentially the arcade version. It was first developed on a x68000 by capcom as these were the machines they developed their cps 1 games! its a carbon coppy of the arcade (the arcade may be partially smoother due to extra video ram). The pc engine version is sloppy by comparison and graphics arent as sharp even the genesis/megadrive version is superior in both graphics, speed and animation.. The music is amazing on the pc engine version.
@y2k4ever1 I remember Klax well but wasnt aware that it was developed on amiga hardware. Lets face it the x68k blows the amiga out of the water (i am a huge amiga fan though, but not of amiga strider = YUK). You know if i was aware of the x68ks existence as a kid, i would have bought one just for Street Fighter 2, it too is amazing!
@deenowski True, and that makes me wonder, when i looked this computer up, it said it was a part of the generation that the NES and Sega Master System were in, and i look at this and this looks as good as a damn arcade cabinet, i think there might have been a mistake on their part this looks great, especially the port of gradius 2, perfect, i would try to buy one of these marvelous machines myself if it weren't for the fact their so expensive, well cheers! :D
This game has the best design, the graphics are still beautiful today. This Eastern future which is a mix of communism and Orthodox Christianity, the full moon, the onion domes... Just so weird.
I still remember that frustrating feeling of the jump, you're in the air so long with no control you never know if you're going to land on something bad.

Genesis/MegaDrive version was 8 megabits. arcade was 43 megabits

the X68000 was very close in graphics performance to CPS. Also since the X68000 discs could hold much more than 8 megabits of ROM, they could have all the original arcade sprites, backgrounds, artwork, sound, etc. with very little downgrade (almost none). only a little flicker
LOL. the Genesis version was a piece of shit compared to the Arcade CPS original, the extremely close X68000, PS1 version and PS2/Xbox versions in Capcom Classics Collection vol 2 (and PSP CCCR)
For the time, the Genesis port was amazing considering the differences in hardware (unless CPS had the Motorola CPU also). I'm sure very few people back then were disapointed with the port.

1.) SuperGrafx strider was never released.
2.) X68000 is more powerful than SuperGrafx
X68000 color palette: 65,536
SuperGrafx color palette: 512
SuperGrafx Strider was going to be 8 or 10 megabits.
X68000 Strider ROM was as large as the arcade, 43 megabits.
Compare Ghouls 'n Ghosts released on SuperGrafx to the X68000 version.

the Megadrive/Genesis Strider was not a port (a term that's massively overused) It was a conversion. Yes, there's a difference.
port means all the original art / graphics/ music / gamecode, etc is used.
conversion means the game is redrawn, reprogrammed, remade, etc. to fit within the limitations of a different (usually weaker) system.
Strider was ported to X68000, PS1, PSP, PS2, Xbox
AirRaidX 4 years ago
um, the x68k port was a conversion as well.
