Absolutely everywhere that I've found how-to's on bench pressing, from this and 100 other videos to actual professional sports text books, they ALL say to arch your lower back, yet then why do all of the gym kiddies say that's cheating and that you're not supposed to do it? It boggles my mind.
Im.currently.weight.165 and my max bench is 275, my goal is 315 is it possible to do that without gaining any weights? And how do I bench more? Please reply thanks a bunch
@zzhomeboy1 you will end up gaining some weight, but its muscle mass. since you want to be stronger, you do have to gain more muscle, and the more muscle you gain, the more weight you gain.
@zzhomeboy1 you won't gain weight, because judging by your bodyweight to strength ratio your already near your genetic plateau so no, don't expect to gain weight, unless you eat like a fatass...
How much weight do you use there? I'm starting out and I'm wondering how much to use. Alsp I just got a new Marcy bench and the part that holds the barbell is getting really marked up :( The Marcy barbell has hard grip all that way along and scrapes into it, taking all the paint off. The bar I feel is very thin too and the grip is really far apart. I might send it back. It's also a 6ft bar and I'm now thinking of sending it back maybe, for a 5ft bar. Any info would be great, thanks :)
the point in training the chest is to isolate it ..so when ur training it... it gets maxim growth , not to tuck in your shoulders and make , ur triceps and shoulders do all the work. ....also why would use this technique to left more weights? ur just gonna cause a stupid injury.
@getbigordietrying1 You have ZERO idea how functional anatomy works. Tucking your elows protects your AC joint and brings the bar down in as straight of a line as possible. Guess every powerlifter in the world is wrong. "But you need to isolate bro". No not really. Especially in the traditional bodybuilding bench press, everything but your chest gets worked. If you really feel the needs to isolate do some flyes instead.
wow i def need someone to help me benching. when i have my elbows the way he has them my shoulders end up hurting, but when my arms are out ( like my body in a T shape) my shoulders dont hurt. Any suggestions?....
I tuck my elbows in..the main reason is because you do more exercises and movements in sports with your elbows tucked in...Football-Pushing? Basketball-Passing?
You dont want to go super slow when benching even though it does do your chest good. you will mess up your joints because they are not ment to move that slow, you will demolish your joints in the long run.
Where do I grip the barbell ? I am currently gripping in the edge of the Line (marked) because my arms are short, but I do not know if I am working my Tricep or Pect.
Im 21 and getting back to working out to get back in shape. Now its been 4 1/2 yrs since i bench press because i moved to a new place when i was 16 and didnt know where to go or anyone to work out with. But my question is how much should i start off with to warm up and work out with and how often should i do it till i get use to it and move up a little more. Plz someone help me out with some tips or info leave me a message in my inbox. Thnkz
Basic agreement is to do as much weight as you can to achieve 3 sets of 8-16 reps.
If you can't do at least 8 reps, you have too much weight, if you can do 16 reps, you're not using enough.
Personally, I thought it was really helpful to bench a small amount of weight (30-50lbs) for a few days as a stretch/getting my body used to the motion of benching before I put up a real weight.
@Akoustikus yeah thats what I was think like start off small and work my way up. But it feels enbarrassing to have lil weights while everyone else got like 45 on both lol and everyone lookin at u but got to start somewhere to get back into it. But thanks for the info :)
I love my home gym for denying muscleheads entrance if their head is too big to fit in the door. If your gym is like most others, this is not the case.
To maintain some dignity, put up small weights, take your reps suuuuuper slow. You won't show any struggle, because the weight is so small, and keep a focused look on your face, people will assume you know exactly what you're doing.
@Akoustikus sho nuff thats why i keep my sun glasses on the whole time i work out b/c i dont have time for BS with ppl. other that push ups and sit ups what else is good to do @ home?
The best resources I've found are Scooby1961's video uploads. He's 50, in great shape, and all of his videos are done from the "at-home" perspective. He is a bit weird, slightly annoying, and doesn't have a perfect point of view, his videos are best taken alongside videos from other trainers, such as jimmysmithtraining etc.
There is so much you can do with a set of dumbells, the gym isn't a necessity to get a full workout. =]
There is one thing here that I didn't see here. When powerlifters get the bar out, they pull the bar out to use their lats a lot more, not press it out. Which would you recommend most?
so is this right, you tuck your elbows in? My mate said to do it then I looked in a magazine and the bloke had his elbows wide...it definitely feels like I've had a better work out with elbows in...
Hi Jimmy! I am confused about some thing I often read in articles that when you work out you should start out with light weights to warm up the muscles and do atleast 2 warm up sets. but when I read their workout schedule they ask to do 3 sets of 8-12 reps and suggest to reach the failure in last couple reps. My question is the warm up sets are part of those three sets or they should be done in addition to those? Also do we have to get to failure on every set?
@furqanrauf Thanks for the question. No you don't have to get to failure on each set. You actually want to be a rep or 2 shy of failure. As far as they warm-ups. they are lighter sets of about 15-20 and do not count. Don't be stuck with the 8-12 reps thought.
@jimmysmithtraining i heard from scooby i think when u bench ur elbows shouldnt go past ur body thats why he benches on the ground, is this true? he is ripped and has good technique on everything else he does but i just want to double check
@1234canadian1234 -I'm ripped too, have you seen my recent pics. For real, being ripped or huge mean NOTHING in terms of training knowledge. Your elbows shouldn't be super out wide like you see in bodybuilding magazines. They should be tucked like powerlifters.
@jimmysmithtraining poo u dont understand, so when ur bench pressing and u push they barbell up and down i hear ur elbows should not go down past ur body thats why some people do bench presses on the floor
No I think the question canadian was asking is how far to bring the bar down. When some people bring it to their chest, their elbow dip past the bench and put unnecessary strain on the shoulder joint. He was asking your input on whether to bring the bar down to your chest or to 90 degrees (elbows not past bench.)
@maxusbh Hes on steroids lol jk at 14 thats alot is that with a bench shirt because my friend just turned 16 and he maxed 405 w/ a shirt he decided not to bench anymore wait so he doesn't get to large of muscles
I have one question and I keep gettiing loads of different answers. When I bench, am I supposed to touch my chest (and go more than parallel), or not touch by chest but go parallel?
@saxiv that's different from person to person .. if you're not feeling any pain in your shoulders, you can of course touch the chest with the bar, you've got to try it out, what works best for you ;)
You appear to be confusing the bodybuilder bench press and the powerlifter bench press. Powerlifters really don't care too much about their chest development because they feel (at least louie simmons feels) that the chest is a rather weak muscle and that alot of strength actually comes from the long head of the tricep and the delt. Adopting this form and worrying about chest development is a bit wonky to me.Wouldnt using bodybuilder form and shoulder pre\rehab be a bit more productive?
That was my first time benching, i used a seated machine press before that and repped 240 and maxed 300.
the flat bench was a kick to my ego a bit but it just gives me another goal to work at. I am not in it to see how much I can lift I just want to increase my strength safely and build lean muscle.
15 years old, yes that 205lb that was 1 month ago, I got 225, 4 45's and the bar, yes it is possible i can do it, my squat went down though Im trying to get a better form to get stronger im doing 135, im 5'9, weight 144.
age only has a little to do with it most of it is in how much you weight, how often you lift, and how athletic you are. and to prove this when i was 16 i was 135 lbs bodyweight benching 195 lbs or about 88kg
if u bench 205 what do u need on both sides u shud know that ur talkin the bar is 45 then 45 on boths sides then 30 on sides then ur talkin 5 on both sides bullshitttt.. and u squat more than u bench atleast i am 1 year older i am a rb i bench 175 and squat 245.......
@send2rahul I said 4 45's like two in each side + the bar is 225, 45+45+45+45+45=225, and My squat was 150 I know it's lower than my bench but if you read the other comment I'm recovering from a broken ankle and that comment was a month ago, I got 235 on bench, and I got 200 on squat still lower than my bench but I will get there, I weight 150 now gained 6 pounds this month
back should bee tight and chest hold up would make it alot better to workout the chest part and ofc befor you lift it! shoulder and feet position was fine.
dont lie, Im 16, I weight 68kg, 1.84m tall, and taking around 50-55kg. True I don't go 3-4 days a week, but 1-2, and it's impossible what you're saying
i c on thing wrong...you didnt touch your chest more than once...try a chinese bench...you set it on your chest for 3 seconds....as with the chinese squat you hold it rock bottom for 3 seconds!!!
later i need to post a video of me a chinese guy benching 300llbs at age 15. I don't know why you guys think it's so tough to understand that at a young age it is still possible to be strong.
Sure powerlifting is fun even if your not trying to gain much mass, but 28 isnt that young anymore in this sport. Thats 12 potential heavy training years, hardly a prodigy.
this is a good video. i always put my elbows out, and on purpose. but i didn't know your supposed to tuck them in. same with the heels thing. i hope that i will be able to bench 200 by the end of summer, i can only do 175 now.
He said you shouldnt have your feet down, because that takes the work off your pecs and arms, you should have your feet up on the bench, and press it MUCH slower than that.
Well your trainner is an idiot and doesnt know anything about the bench press. this guy knows what hes talking about. there are alot more things he could include in this but im asumming for the sake of time he didnt go into them. but also breaking down the bench into parts such as board benching and rack lock outs along with the use of adding bands and reverse bands and also chains. all will increase your bench in ways you never thought possible.
i cant do the thing with the legs touching the ground im too short but i do the other things n i bench 215 can i get more if i use my legs??? are there smaller benches???
Hell no thats bull lol i've been workin out for a while and I cant even bench as much as some of these people are saying that these 15 and 16 year olds do...i mean maybe its true but I think Its on roids cuz got damn...15 and you bench that much...come on
8th grade - 160 - bench 210 (i got that like a month ago) 310 squat, 320 deadlift (i dont deadlift, i was just fooling around that day i easily could have gotten like 340-50) and a 170 clean (i havnt cleaned since christmas)

Hi, close or narrow grips will certainly work your arms and didnt isolate the chest perfectly!
The perfect position is 90 degree angle elbows..

I love my home gym for denying muscleheads entrance if their head is too big to fit in the door. If your gym is like most others, this is not the case.
To maintain some dignity, put up small weights, take your reps suuuuuper slow. You won't show any struggle, because the weight is so small, and keep a focused look on your face, people will assume you know exactly what you're doing.

send2rahul 2 years ago
@send2rahul I said 4 45's like two in each side + the bar is 225, 45+45+45+45+45=225, and My squat was 150 I know it's lower than my bench but if you read the other comment I'm recovering from a broken ankle and that comment was a month ago, I got 235 on bench, and I got 200 on squat still lower than my bench but I will get there, I weight 150 now gained 6 pounds this month

i c on thing wrong...you didnt touch your chest more than once...try a chinese bench...you set it on your chest for 3 seconds....as with the chinese squat you hold it rock bottom for 3 seconds!!!
2066241 2 years ago
later i need to post a video of me a chinese guy benching 300llbs at age 15. I don't know why you guys think it's so tough to understand that at a young age it is still possible to be strong.

Sure powerlifting is fun even if your not trying to gain much mass, but 28 isnt that young anymore in this sport. Thats 12 potential heavy training years, hardly a prodigy.

this is a good video. i always put my elbows out, and on purpose. but i didn't know your supposed to tuck them in. same with the heels thing. i hope that i will be able to bench 200 by the end of summer, i can only do 175 now.
zerosbiggestfan 2 years ago
My trainer told me the complete opposite of this.
He said you shouldnt have your feet down, because that takes the work off your pecs and arms, you should have your feet up on the bench, and press it MUCH slower than that.
CarrickIsAMaestro 2 years ago
Well your trainner is an idiot and doesnt know anything about the bench press. this guy knows what hes talking about. there are alot more things he could include in this but im asumming for the sake of time he didnt go into them. but also breaking down the bench into parts such as board benching and rack lock outs along with the use of adding bands and reverse bands and also chains. all will increase your bench in ways you never thought possible.
