On the siskel and ebert website, there is a full video of a 1994 special that Siskel and Ebert did called Why Gump, Why Now where there try to explain how Forrest Gump became the big hit it did, and this was before it walked away with the Oscar, check it out.
this movie is for everyone. philosophers, historians, critics, everyday schmoes; even the KIDS love it! I first saw this when i was in fourth grade, and now i am a film critic in training
Here are my problems with this movie: People came out, saying how "Inspirational" it was. I'm sorry, how is a movie, about a strongly autistic person, inspiring? He didn't even know where he was half the time, I mean, he didn't care at all that he was in a friggin WAR. AND, how overrated this movie is. I mean, I liked this, but guys, it's not that great, I'm sorry, but it's not. And now people are thumbing me down for having a differing opinion. How accepting you all are! :)
@Jman92854 It just presents a quirky man with a low IQ, who triumphs over everything that pessimists are too negative to even attempt. He's dumb enough not to care what other people think, and constantly puts himself out there without risk of embarassment. It is inspirational because it inspires a positive outlook on optimism... I think thats like the definition of inspirational.
"I'm not a smart man." Runner up for movie understatement of all time. And it was fake on top of that b/c most retard or autistic sufferers don't really 'know' that they are not 'smart' I mean thats part of it, obvoiusly they think they are 'normal' &or like any1 else!! i mean the only way they could know is if some one TOLD them they are 'dumb' or lack intellect and any1 who has seen THIS movie KNOWS that, THATs not the case, his MOM KEEPS him thinking he is normal, o
@CubbieBear1980 hes smart enough to know hes not smart... is that some sort of absurd concept to you... perhaps someone that doesnt realize that hitting shift_7 for an ampersand takes more effort than typing out 'a-n-d' wouldnt understand.
the moral of the story is to not think too hard and you'll come out alright because the American system is just so damn-well put together to benefit the common man or woman
ive always wondered, jenny died of aids, after she married forrest, so she either cheated on him or always had aids & in that case she would have given it to forrest and forrest jr.
@DXFan1269 Cheating on Forrest would not be out of character for Jenny... considering she is such an unreliable person throughout the movie. Of course, you can also get HIV by sharing needles.
If I was stranded on a desert island and had to choose only one movie to watch, Forrest Gump would be it. It sends me on a whirlwind of emotions and leaves me with an honest moral: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. It's so profound and beautiful.
Wait, the scenes with Nixon and Kennedy were used with special effects? All this time I thought those were actors not the presidents! Wow this special effects truly were amazing
Simply the most magical movie I've ever seen. I remember seeing it in the theaters when I was 11 and the first time I thought to my self "that was a great film" First time I realized what a Director did, what makes an amazing performance as an actor and realized film could be a work of art in story telling.
@milascave2 and one flew over the cuckoos nest was mostly in the indians point of view, the book that is, and i loved the movie more, somethings just work better differently
@KissesLoveKawaii and is an autistic savant who aces an advanced physics class. And at the end he leaves home and starts a one man street band in New Orleans.
also a beautiful overview of American History, great soundtrack and is not a happy go lucky film, it´s actually immensely sad for anyone not paying attention to all the deaths. really funny too and so many great lines. That´s my rant defending this film, though, Pulp Fiction still maybe was better cause of its originality and impact. though it was just a stacked year
those films aren´t way better. All are amazing, but this film is sheer genius. Deals with so many different issues: single parenthood, race and women´s rights, war, child abuse, drug abuse. It has strong religious undertones but not to spread a christian message but rather to show the importance to the character. Tom Hanks definitely deserved best actor too and all the others are great. he does an amazing job characterizing a less intelligent man that wants respect just like everyone else.
what the hell happened to Robert Zemeckis? People used to compare him to Spielberg! But the last ten years have been dreadful. He needs to get back to live-action!
To answer Ebert's quandary about how the speech scene was executed, The Mall was partitioned into a grid, and the filmmakers would film an entire grid square filled with people, and then in post production that grid square of people was replicated to create the illusion of hundreds of thousands of people in The Mall around The Reflecting Pool. Thank God for DVD Extras, lol.

From what I hear, THIS is how you properly show recent American history.
