    This idiot is as much technically-challenged as I am.

  • Check your vaccuum switching valve. It's hard to reach, but if you remove your passenger side front tire and look up on the block you will see it. I did this on my 99 Camry. Hard to reach, but the code should go off after you replace it.

  • I've had P0401. It has nothing to do with the catalytic converter.  I would avoid that mechanic, as it seems as though he was trying to rip you off. When I initially got it, I removed the EGR valve, which is the circular object where you we're hearing the hissing, and cleaned it. That temporarily fixed the issue. At a later time, the light came back on. This time, through diagnosis, I found that the EGR vacuum switching valve had gone bad. Replacing it eliminated the problem.
