I'm autistic and even though I don't stim as far as I know, I do have little particulaties. Sleeping in the fetal position is more comfortable for me but for some reason I can't fall asleep when I do, I have to sleep on my back. I don't like the feeling on hip-height pants and skirts, so they are either high-waisted or a dress. And my stomach tends to wake up 2 hours after I do so I really mind eating light things for breakfast like yoghurt and crackers.
Your son does look quite happy! As for your quesition "Is this Stimming?" Probably, but it could also be an emotional release. Stimming is behavior that is done specifically to generate a paticular type of sensory imput. people with autism ofem have difficulty with experessing emotions in typical ways, so that is another possibility to consider
My own way of stimming when I was a kid, I would spin my hands round and round attempting to imitate the wheels of Thomas The Tank Engine (one of my obsessive interests, yes I have asperger's syndrome). It was annoying that my parents A) Kept trying to restrict it in public places B) Kept confusing it with "hand-flapping".
If you curious, this stimming is helping him stimulate his cerebellum which aids in his proprioceptive functioning, in other words, he does this to feel calmer and coordinate his body within the space around him. He shows a lot of promise, verbally.
HA!!! My daughter does that too. Yes, it's stimming. My daughter has PDD-NOS, and is now 7. She goes through phases (months or years)- sometimes it's the jumping in circles, sometimes it's squeeling, sometimes it's spitting raspberries or blowing in my face (yes, gross, but she doesn't understand that), sometimes it's poking people in the eyes. Classic PDD-NOS (not answering your questions), etc.
Everyone stims. As a therapist for Autistic children I have to say that just because your child stims doesn't mean they're autistic. By going to WEAP or anyother organization that will be able to provide you with the correct answer. A regular Ped isn't the way to go. The sooner that a child in a program the better it is for development. Look for other characteristics ( lack of eye contact, slow language development, etc.
Thank you for sharing this :) My son stims by jumping and flapping ~ I have a video up if you want to see. This def looks like stimming to me ~ My son does it when he feels good :)
@hh73 A LOT of autistic people were diagnosed back then with bi-polar. I had this overwhelming feeling that my oldest daughter was bi-polar for years, and when I finally had her tested they told me that she has atypical autism. which is also called PDD-NOS. Are you sensitive to things (smells, sounds, textures)? Do things have to be "just right" or it makes you really really frustrated? It's interesting, maybe you should check it out. (I'm not an expert, just a mom with 2 on the spectrum)
@yintibbies i was diagnosed bp when i was 24. been on meds since.(am 36 now) the questions you just asked me i can honestly say yes if i think about it. i do know a lot of bp people also have these sysmptoms. i am terribly add, i also know add and bp are frequently seen together too. wow. i have a lot of questions now.
I used to skills train for a boy that looked and sounded exactly this way. Your child has much more verbal expression tho.. you are lucky, get him therapy asap and he will speak to you.
Hi. Aspergers here. I remember stimming this way, and we also have alot of videos confirming it. :P
mimiluvsherboys:
That depends on the degree of autism. Remember it's a spectrum disorder. For example People with AS (Aspergers), could be doing stims alone, but not when there are others.
@mimiluvsherboys Some are very difficult to get right. Especially kids with aspergers, which doesn't usually get diagnosed (regularly) until the child is 12.
@mimiluvsherboys Does every autistic child stim? I think that would be a yes, but they all do it in their own way. My daughter has had every stim known to man, but the one you would miss is that she chews on her fingers. OK, so I know some adults who do that too, but her fingernails get infected and her nails bleed at least 3 times a week. My older daughter stims privately in her bedroom by twisting her whole body around and planting her face in her pillow, but not all day long.
everybody stims in their own way...but one thing i noticed....is him licking the window....it is a common trait the they tend to i guess exlpore with their tongue...not saying every kid who licks a window has autism...but it is common in autistic kids....my stepson has been known to lick a few windows...and yes he is autistic
My son licks everything! Haha =P It's mostly when he's super excited, or is asked to sit still. He even licks people, but I'm trying to find a good alternative stem. Like giving him a cub with a straw or something for his mouth.
TBH i really do not think so most the time they are un aware of you "In there own world" but yeah get checked I think there are places that do it for free
So, Sorry! I haven't logged on here in forever! Yes, he was diagnosed with Autism in October. He was diagnosed almost instantly. He is now getting OT and Speech, and is in a wonderful preschool and doing great! Thanks for your wonderful comments, except that one, I guess some people have to make themselves feel better somehow, and if picking on an autistic child does it for ya, then so be it!!
Tekubus, I believe you are the one with mental issues. How dare you say such an cruel remark as that. As a parent with an autistic child, I am disgusted with you and your idiotic remarks. By the way, what is your IQ?
nope he is not stiimmming because my brother has autisum and he stimms and that doesnt look like he is stimming! watch my vids of him youll see how an autistic child acts when he is stimming>
This child stimming is different to your child. Not every child with asd will stim the same way. I got asd and I pace alot and my son flap spins and flap and my nephew stand and hum and flap. I have Aspergers so my nephew and my son is autism. so not every child is the same
My 8 year old spins, and he used to stim other ways, but he must have figured spinning worked better for him (he had this little finger/hand thing he used to do).
Not every autistic person/child stims the same. This little guy seems to have a little delay in language too. Ben is verbal also, but has a lot of difficulty with language and expressing himself.
Hey-look at my site - Rosalie (now 6) has always done this when happy. She's MUCH louder though :) She has PDD-NOS, and epilepsy. She has great eye contact and is very social, but autistic none-the-less.
I would consider that stimming especially being it seemed hard to redirect him from it when you asked him to give you 5. Does he have an ASD diagnosis yet?
Why do almost all kids nowadays need to have autism..?? is it maybe..a fashion??!! From the 'autism' videos posted on this site I believe only a few present children on the autistic spectrum..I mean a few..you can count them on your fingers..
@laurac482 Its not like we would choose it, with the stress and alienation from family and friends. If you find the answer let ME know OK.
And stop making half assed judgements if you dont know that facts, its not a fad its 24/7 with No end in sight thanks for YOUR kind words you YOUTUBE expert. Bless You
@laurac482 Considering that statistics show that 1 in every 110 children has something that falls on the autism spectrum, I'd say it isn't a fad at all. I believe the methods of diagnosing are becoming more reliable and that it is being diagnosed more successfully. There are probably a lot of people from my generation that had autism but it wasn't known then to be a spectrum of traits and so they were never diagnosed with it. Just ended up labeled mentally retarded or just plain weird.
he is just excited.

He is beautiful and you are blessed in a unique way, as am i.:)

he could be just playing or it could be some other
disorder there are many disorders that make kids

It's sensory but not necessarily stimming. To be technical, it is one way to activated the cerebellum which helps with calming.
radketim 1 year ago
also look for any sensory actions. Sticking his hand in his diaper, licking everything, strong sense of smells, etc
