That has got to be one of the most MESSES up endings I have ever seen of this! If they were going to stick to the book and have her dying couldn't they stick to the book a bit further and have Quasimodo's skeleton found with her. This is just BAD - there is no other word for it.
The only movie version that actually followed Victor Hugo's story. For those who choose to read Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame does not have a happy ending. But Hugo wasn't attempting to create a Disney story. His tale has other messages about the nature of man, government and the passions. His powerful message resulted in the birth of a classic, not another sappy romance. Victor Hugo would be horrified to view what Hollywood has done to twist his timeless classic.
plus: Kenneth Haigh is a very good Frollo, he's got this fever in his eyes when he looks at Esmeralda (and he has a very unhealthy complexion, something between paleness and sour milk); I read he was once slapped in the face in the middle of a play by a woman from the audience who couldn't bear his character. Must have been an intense potrayal
i'm impressed; of all adaptions of the novel, that one actually understood what the book was about; not this "beauty is in the eye of beholder" and all that stuff which the other versions try to establish. Hugo's novel is reflection of fiction and projection, and Esmeralda has to die because she'e merely an idea, a symbol, whatever you like to call it. She has to be shallow because she's not an individual.
As for the complaints about ending: come on! it's obviously an analogy, not naturalism
This version was very enjoyable and it's quite faithful to the original story. As for the ending, it's nice to see Gringroire having the last word (I liked him and Jehan the best, although all the actors in this production were impressive), although it did feel like it lacked some finesse. I would have preferred an ending which included the part with Quasi staying by Esme until death. Still, I wouldn't say this movie was bad - from what I've seen so far, it's the best at staying close to novel.
O.K, a sixteen year old girl is brutally executed with the executioner jumping on her broken neck shortly after he kicked the barrel out from under her... Esmeralda is being hung for commiting murder, but the person she "murdered" is in attendance.
meanwhile, people look up to clearly see the archdeacon hollering at the top of his lungs while being pushed over the edge of the church. he goes splat and Esmeralda still hangs... and it's now a maypole dance... wait... did I miss something? Oo
i was thinking the same thing..what the hell....? poor Esmeralda, blamed for a crime she diddent do and then being shown no respect, not even in death.
pierre you douche why didnt you save her for goodness sake why would you leave her alone in a boat with a creepy man. esmeralda you should have choosen to stay at the cathdral with quasi and he could have hidden you. okay got that off my chest. great verson though.
This is the only film of this book which was faithful to the novel. Most all the others had happy endings which were very incongruous with the times, not to mention the novel. There were no happy endings for the common man for most of human history. The aristocracy & the clergy ruled over everyone & owned everything. The only justice is that Frollo actually got some..
Although the acting in this seemed very British and made me laugh sometimes I will admit I really loved the use of set in this. Okay its obvious it was all filmed inside a studio but it was still incredibly believeable
two dead bodies and they have a dance!! gringoires just like"hmm this would be a good story!" not a fan! thanks for the upload though its nice to see different versions even the disapointing ones! xxx
I think its probably to do with the fact that back then hangings were a public spectacle in some cases the only form of entertainment they really had also they seemed to have completely lost all regard for Esmeralda all thinking she was a witch so they could also be like yay the witch is dead or something. Man humanity is a bitch sometimes
I know: it's inane. It was a filmed play not a movie. But this was lame, with pace or authenticity. Absolutely: people come out to a hanging to dance. Or watch a murder, and dance. Most natural thing in the world.
Executions used to be considered great entertainment. Even in 20th century America, there was often a carnival atmosphere at public hangings complete with commemorative merchandise like plates and belt buckles. Horrible but true. The movie takes a cynical, unromanticized view of human nature in all the characters except Quasimoto and Esmeralda are driven by their own selfish desires. A frequent theme in literature philosophy.
what a horrible ending, the wedding parade just marching in, it just makes a mockery or this tragic tale. i would've liked to have seen quasi lay down next to esmeralda and die next to her as it happened in the book, but i supose considering how accurate this version was and they didn't block out any of the more morbid scnes i shouldn't complain. films can never be as good as books after all^^
He was one in the novel too. He didnt acre about saving her. He only likes the goat, that is the reason he was with her all the time. That is just not right. I hope you agree.
not really i mean they never show Quasimodo dying in Esméralda's tomb but it's close compred to the 1939 and 1982 versions and the 1923 and 1997 and 1996

Esme, stop being shallow and stupid. The reason why you aren't like that in other versions is because we don't like you that way.
Zenagaserpent 9 months ago
it would of been okay if they left the film in mourning of the sad ending. this is just irritating! totally killed the moment!

Why didn't Quasi just save her again? It's not like he was too late or anything like in the book...

1. Poor poor Esmeralda! Somebody give her brain! Why didn´t she PRETEND to go with Frollo?
2. And somebody kill Phoebus. He makes me sick.

This is by far, the worst ending to all the hunchback of notre dame movies.
No wonder no one talks about this version!
A (evil) archeadon just died and they saw the murderer, the gypsy girl they wanted kill for so long just died and can they do??
O yes: DANCE!
What the hell? Its like they are mocking the novel and Victor Hugo himself.
Like they are trying to say "dancing would make everything better".Those pricks.
The best ending was the 1956 version.
The only movie with the true ending!
yourmomxxpp2 2 years ago 4
didnt 56 version didnt she get shot by an arrow?

Yep
Esme got shot by an arrow and then they hanged her.
The movie didnt show her get hanged though.
