According to police investigation, Ernie may have dropped his cigar while driving, and when trying to reach for it, lost control and crashed, killing him instantly.

Isn't that the truth. Replace it with 1 of the 500 versions of Family Feud?!?! I'm still mad at that. I miss Ernie's "Can it be folded" and Bennett Cerf's horrible corny jokes (I laughed at them!)
I got on my parents nerves asking if they knew this person and that person but it's was so much better watching this than the crap that's on now.
@bubblinbrownsugar616 Funny, I used to do something similar: when the mystery guest would come on, I wouldn't look at their name. I waited until after the first question just to see if I could recognize a person when they were younger.
for the many who have no idea what or who Ernie K. was -I can only say his influence on Late Night TV is beyond measure- Many of the "skits" ones sees on talk shows are a direct rip from the Ernie Kovacs play book- He advanced TV prdouction with his creative editing & writing skills...
ok the first time Ernie stood up and ran up to the panel, what did he do? He either did something to Dorothy or Bennett. It looks like he did something to Bennett, but Dorothy was laughing. His hand looked like it reached in her direction a little bit.
It is interesting to contemplate what 1960s TV comedy would have been like if Kovacs had not died young. It would have been a lot less linear for sure.
Fates' book says Goodson-Todman offered Kovacs a contract. He declined it, because he wanted creative control on on his own TV series. He did get that a few times before he died.
However, YouTube's clips of "What's My Line Henry J. Kaiser" and "What's My Line Julie London" suggest hints that Kovacs (non-linear surreal humor) and Bennett Cerf (puns and jokes) aggravated each other.
I like both Cerf and Kovacs, but their humors seem at odds with each other on WML.
Soulier, thanks for the tip on Fates' book. I went to the Worldcat library site and now have that book coming to MY library thru interlibrary loan. Can't wait to read it! No luck on finding a biography on John Charles Daly, tho. Know if anything like that is available? If not, maybe you could write one ! :-)
Let's see GSN try and top this: Robert Young, Kovacs, one of the first women elected to the Diet of Japan's Senate, mystery guest Doris Day, and twin bartenders.
Daly is as urbane as ever, but there are flashes when he looks as if he cannot quite believe Kovacs.
What's with DK? She screams when she identifies Kovacs, and she screamed again when the bartenders said they made 3 to 1 formula martinis. One of her last appearances as a redhead.
soulierinvestments, is that bartender episode posted? do you know? And Dorothy as a redhead?? I wish these were in colour, I would love to see how everyone looked being in colour, especially Dorothy. Can't find anything with her in colour or even a photo..
No, the twin bartender sequence does not appear on YouTube. Clips from the 1956 - 1957 period show Dorothy in her red period. She had a very short blond period in October 1960.

Looks like Arline Francis was looking down at notes she had written. Her mask does not appear as form-fitting as the others' do.

The joyous scream uttered by Ms. Dorothy at 4:24 is a million dollars all by itself. What a great episode.

I love it during the moments on this clip when the usually even-tempered JCD sounds a little PO'd.

Ernie Kovacs was too hip for the room. We really need him today.
