this guy is annoying because in video clip after video clip, he keeps saying, "this is very strange" or "i don't really understand that" or "i don't know what that will be". well if the guy can't offer any insights then why is he being sought as a source of explanation???
That's because it's a video clip. If you want in depth insight read his three volume work totaling around 1900 pages explaining 1st century Judaism, the historical Jesus, life after life after death, etc. in great detail. It's not written at a popular level though.
EVerytime I think that Jesus really DID rise from the dead, it fills my soul with joy and hope that everything will be ok, and that there IS life after death!
Jesus made seven statements while on the cross, one of them was to a criminal beside him on a cross...he said that you will be in paradise with me today,I think the paradise of today is heaven in the present as a new heaven and earth will be created after the end of the tribulation.
The term 'paradise' referred to here (from Lk 23:43) is term that the original readers would have understood as a reference to the the Garden of Eden. In the LXX the same term is used in Gen 2:8, 13:10 & Ezek 31:8 to refer to this. In Isa 51:3 the term takes on a messianic aspect. NT Wright seems to have missed this here and the theology of the garden of the day.
Don't you just love people that expresses them selves with such great certainty about Christianity, but when asked a direct question, is never able to deliver a concrete answer?
Paradise is located in Hell, with a gulf fixed between the two which none can cross. To get to Paradise, you must go through Hell ironically. David said the Lord would not leave his soul IN hell, and he obviously went to Paradise where Abraham was and everyone else under God's grace and mercy.
@mirrormoveuchiha You have a very misinformed view of Paradise, Hell, and Hades.
Consider the end of Revelation in which the text says that Hades will be cast into the Lake of Fire. Hell is the lake of Fire - Hades, thus, cannot be. David never went to Hell. David went to Sheol (Hebrew) or Hades (Greek).
@Zipster0007 I understand your separtion of the hebrew words, but, i disagree, take Jesus when he talks about the rich man going to hell, a place of fiery torment, and talking to Abraham acrross a great gulf between hell and paradise. Yes in revelation, hell is cast into the lake of fire, the second death, the lake of fire is separate from hell(hades is greek for hell, underworld, place where hades reigns). David went ot paradise.
"Hades" is not greek for Hell; Hades is equivalent to "Sheol" which is Hebrew for "The grave" or "the abode of the dead." Sheol is what has the partition within it, which is referred to in Luke 16. "Paradise" was Abraham's Bosom - it was a temporary adobe for those who were righteous. The gulf separated them from a place of torment.
The Greek word for Hell is "Gehenna" - and it is into Gehenna that Hades is swallowed up into.
@Zipster0007 If you go to hell, or paradise, your going into the earth, the grave of the dead who dont accept Gods message is Hades the place most of the KJV calls hell, and gehenna which is what you call Hell is in the KJV the Lake of Fire which Hades is cast into., this is where they will stay until judgement.
@JRMAN65 Christianity is not really certain about it. What is central to our faith is the resurrection of the dead, resurrection of the physical body at the end of time. Thus, the life in the new world---here on earth.
bermudamartin-that would be a nonsensical and superflous statement, it has no textual or linguistic support either. Why not just accept the common reading?
This is a mater of where one puts the coma.Orthodox christianity puts it after the words,"i tell you the truth, then continue with "this day you will be with me".According to greek scholars and thier understanding of greek sentence structure.And.....that Jesu never used the phrse any other way but this way in His other statements ...."i tell you the truth.
addendum: and the judgment does not occur until the very End of Days; so, between death and the end of days, there are endless possibilities concerning which the TNKH is silent.
On Yom Kippur, we pray for the souls who have died that they may receive the merits that they have inspired in us to do.... Until the resurrection, many accounts may be settled which are yet to be determined at the time of death. This, however, may be a matter of reward which is known fully to the Timelss One.
27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
1 John 1:7,9..the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
I am sure that I have not studied Xianity as much as you, but NT that speaks of every man receiving a reward based on deeds-whether good or evil-he has done on earth. In my understanding, Xians will be rewarded based on the Tsadiq Y'shua (righteousness of Jesus); and the rest of us, we will be judged by our works. During the days of awe we pray that G*d's Y'shua will come bringing our righteousness. Most Rabbis interpret this as SALVATION rather than JESUS. I'm OK with either at this point.
Yes we will be judged according to our works but we are saved through faith. All we must do to be saved is belive in Christ. As it says "no one comes to the father except through the son.
@viktorybane By both deeds and faith. St. James says deeds, Paul says the faith--but both point to the same man as an example--Abraham, which basically means: faith and deeds.
@viktorybane I think believeing is more a matter of fealing. Once you feel Christ with your heart, there's no way back, you know that's the way to go, even though you chose not to.
@viktorybane So, It's not just God's mercy and grace which saves us. He needs our "Yes" to save the world. That's righteousness by your intellectual (or emotional) work. You will have to understand it, to grasp it by your mind and your heart. And if you can't understand or accept, then maybe you haven't thought enough. Or felt enough. Try harder, attend the service, read the bible, pray - and at the end, you will maybe believe. That's because our loving God depends on your mindwork! [/irony]
Amen, my friend people who believe in purgatory are undermining the sufficieny of Christ's atonement on the cross. Hebrews 10:14, 1:3, 10:10, 10:14 and many more. Christ paid it all, my sin is covered with his blood, GOD BLESS

Purgatory contradicts Holy Scripture:
Hebrews 9:27-28
27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
