I love your montage/collage..I agree with a few comments here, alot of pornographic imagery is incredibly derogatory to women+sadly must distort how some men see the real "us" as woman. It's a question I often ponder on.Think does it provide a"function" ? a release for these men,if so then does it lessen violence towards women+kids?or indeed does it heighten it.,sadly the latter I fear.
I adore PJ Harvey,I just see her as a very powerful +somewhat overlooked artist in the UK.I adore her, thanks
my thoughts are alike natashaclaires, though I would'nt use the term "feminism" because of it's wide range of definitions. but for sure, there's some kind of sick exposure to sexuality in our society, "using" people for our satisfaction, instead of connecting to each other, not thinking any further about their lives.
I think the piano is an image for a woman and the lyrics are about this brutal kind of violence (often used against prostitutes). nobody's "playing" the piano or listening to it.
@wes12ify Why are people so scared to use the term 'feminism' like it's derogatory. If you believe that women have equal rights with men then you're a feminist. No other definitions.
A haunting frightening song.. the images are disturbing..I can't say that I don't like it.. nor that I love it..the ''O god I miss you '' words and sound does break my heart..
Now that I watch this video and I see some of the comments posted here, I think this song can actually be about a porn actress who misses her old self, when she was a child and all innocent. Sort of like Tori Amos' Amber Waves song, but like in PJ's point of view. Anyway, just a thought, I know I may be wrong.
I think the first half of the song, when it's understated, is the most powerful part. The ending, when she starts howling like a ghost and saying "nobody's listening" sounds a little melodramatic and trite, like a gothic novel. And I'm saying this as a fan and longtime listener of PJ Harvey, so I guess I'm picky with her music.
PJ is already in legend status. Album after album in a 16 year span has resulted in diverse, deep, creative, original, and emotional body of artistry that gives goosebumps to anyone who appreciates good music.
Interesting debate here. But I disagree that this video is any kind of critique of porn. I see it as a kind of distillation of the perversity and corporeality that permeates pornographic discourse. I think this clip is about pathos and eros and how they constitute and interact with deeply felt emotions.
Right on Dizzy. And don't you dig how she fully explores the barriers between them (eros and pathos), and using her fingers, mouth and soul she traces the contours where they mingle...
I think this video is feminist (feminism is inherently humane, too). I am a woman who grew up with pornography in my home from the age of ten that my dad used. I think many people don't realize what pornography does to women, how violent it now is, or that over 2/3 of women in pornography are survivors of childhood sex abuse. Maybe, "God I miss you" is about the women in pornography too--missing who they might have been. it's a brave video.
That's a good point, but not because you think that pornography is bad for women that doesn't make this a video a feminist video, I think that your point of view is really interesting but as a man I have to say that pornography is somehow important for men and it's just a type of satisfaction...
Claiming the right to buy sexual access to women, to use us through pornography, is not something men need or have to do. It's an act of abuse, and men can do it, only because women don't have equality in this culture. But I know several men who DON'T use pornography, because they don't want to use women. They survive just fine. Your "satisfaction" should not matter more than my or other women's pain.
Claiming that women don't have the right to be sexually explicit is anti-feminist darling, everything in the protectionist "feminism" is embebed in paternalism and the Judaic-Christian idea of sin. The negative effects of porn on how women are treated by men comes from there and not porn it self. True feminism embraces sexual freedom and equality, not an amputation of women's sexuality. the problem is education, not porn.
...and please don't get me wrong, I used to think just like you do, until I grew up and realysed that that line of thought is just a result of trauma, and in the end, just another form of repression and undeserved punishment. People must start to experience sex in a natural and healthier way, without repression and control games and devastating guilts. It would be much better for everyone, women AND men.
Even if paternalism and the Judeo-Christian idea of sin is the root cause of sexualized abuse of women (by men), that does not mean it's ok for porn to exist. Porn is a medium that transmits and tacitly advocates sexualized subjugation and violence. Of course women should be free to express their sexuality. Trying to rid the world of media that further subjugates women and is actually linked to violent acts towards women, is not disallowing female expressions of sexuality.
Being anti-porn means you acknowledge that the current conception of female sexuality is effed-up (it reeks of patriarchy). So, yeah... we should do something different.
Sorry but Female Pron actors are paid more then male actors. whose the mug there? I agree that pornography is male idealised cnetred but I do not think that every female porn actor is some skank smack ho. DO you not understand that men NEED visual stimulation? More to the point Pornography has been around for 1000s of years.
You know that pronography is anything that incites sexual thought?
"Porn is a medium that transmits and tacitly advocates sexualized subjugation and violence." - no it is not, at least not by definition... it does not have to be like that and should not be like that... uff.. I don't have time for this now...
If you don't have time for it, why in god's name are you posting? My goodness. I thought you were the one promoting "education" and yet you're being dismissive and insulting to those you would educate.
Pornography is important for men? Why are such derogatory images of women so important for men? Have you seen any contemporary porn lately? It is totally inhumane and brutal...why is this 'just a type of satisfaction'? I am not attacking you, I am just looking for answers to something that is deeply concerning.

I think if you really wish to live your life humanely you have to see people as more than, just objects, one dimensional story lines, for your sexual gratification. It has a cost.
Dude it's sad but if pornography is important to you that's probably because you have no real live woman in your life. As a man I find porn to be kind of sick
Believe me a real live breathing thinking feeling speaking and f***ing woman is so much more fulfilling than that phoney junk
I don't know whether this video is feminist or simply humane, but it seems to suggest that maybe pornography just isn't very much fun. I'm sure nobody reading this has ever looked at the stuff, but I've heard that it's dismal and benumbing--effects that this combination of video and song capture perfectly. Put all those pornographic images together in the right way, and they spell out "Oh God I Miss You": "I miss the real thing; this is what I have instead."
I think you make a good point. Pornography addiction is nothing but an attempt of filling a gap inside the person's spirit. It is a way to say "Oh God I miss you", like you say.
And don't be so sure... pornography addiction is way much more common than you think.
I didn't mean funny ha ha. I did think that it was funny ironic. It's funny to have all these gross images pushed in your face as we do every day (everyone know's which shit rags i mean) and have them used in this way of contrast between a song that is talking about volence and love. Maybe it's a feminist statement but i guess only p j and maria mochnacz really know, but i think we can all take something from it. *
mmm... I don't think it's funny at all... an I can't explain the video... but I can tell you that Polly that's trying to say something important... I can say that maybe this video is about sex(porn) versus Love...
im still just a bit confused. I also got this feeling of being on that age, between childhood and adulthood, clipping secrectly pics from underware catalog and trying to figure out sexuality.. :)
