I own this on Mega Games I for the Mega Drive (and I think it was released for the Genesis as well(?))

The gameplay in Flash mode is similar to Sega's 1989 Tetris variant, Flash Point (in which you clear a flashing area to advance to the next stage).

Interestingly, the music played in Flash Columns came from Sega's 1988 arcade version of Tetris.
