Great drummer. I still listen to '3 Sides Live' pretty regularly, and I like the stuff he did with Zappa. I never can figure how he can play the drums sitting so high like that though. I'd mess my back up. :)
@drumrnva he plays with really low wrists relative to his hands, which means he doesn't have to bend his back, its a real relaxed way of playing but if you like your snare flat then you get sooooo many rimshots and that breaks your sticks after a while. its real good if you like just grooving on hihat and snare cos its gives your left hand a lot of room and puts it at perfect angle for drags :)
@thomasash What do you think I don't take showers like you? I have heard Phil Collins ever since I was child and thought that he was a piece of shit then as a drummer. I saw Chester in a drum clinic back in '88 and he was fire way better than Phil Collins . Dude I'm sorry I hurt your feelings , and that you are so sensitive BROA !!!
@iFoRgOtMyPsSwRd I have felt that Phil's 80s drumming was generally not as creative and vibrant as his 70's drumming (with Genesis AND with the jazz fusion band, Brand X)...but I can try to respect your feelings about his drumming skills...as for Chester, I am mostly familiar with his work on the (Genesis) "Seconds Out" live album - and I felt he had a nice flow ...
@davss5 I must agree with you on the 70s to 80s. but dats Phil within Phils degeneration on drumming at still such a young age within himself . much no arguing his great success but his drumming to me is somewhat boring
@iFoRgOtMyPsSwRd Thanks for your response...so (for clarification), are you saying that Phil's drumming particularly since the 80s has been boring?...if so, then I might not use the word "boring" but "more simplified" (compared to his 70s drumming)...I could agree that Phil's solo career has been successful - although I only prefer hardly a handful of his songs (e.g., "Take Me Home", "Against All Odds", "You'll Be in My Heart")...for whatever reasons, Phil decided on the "simpler" approach...
@iFoRgOtMyPsSwRd Did someone write sth?? Fuck for a moment i thought i saw a comment but it was just mu imagination... Anyway...
PS. Dude your comment DISAPPEARED from the minute you wrote it. Get a fuckin life and stop hatin on real legends. Its easy to say for me too that Freddie Mercury couldn't sing for shit. Isn't it?
Chester was and is amazing. His technique and stylings with Weather Report, Frank Zappa and Genesis speak for themselves. And when someone like Phil Collins picks you as his fill in drummer, well what can you say?
he sits real high on the drumthrone here,, he always does that? Never seen that before.. But i do love chester,, weather report en Genesis, great stuff!!!
@sgtpepper1138 I'm thinking that Ringo's drumset was arranged at a lower height back then (making it seem that he was sitting higher) - but I may need to watch "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help" again (maybe I'm the one who is wrong)...
oiiiiiiiii c mon idole je fer de la bateri depui 7 an et je sui fanne de lui frenchement pour monter a son nivo il fo le fere ocun batteure ni arrive enfin ci un seule phil collins
Gotta remember, this is a clinic..prob. at a music store, so its not his kit. his tech comes in, kinda puts the drums where he thinks they go, and C.T. does the rest.its not bad at all!
This must no be Mr. Thompson at his best. He seems average on this clip. He mus be having a bad day. His Weather Report tracks re far much better - funkier. Sorry Chester :(
if there is a god,he's on this video playin my dream kit... hey chester, you and phil belong together dude. genisis is in my blood. you pair are my heros. thank you so much
I used to go to church with this man in Brentwood TN. right about this same time :^) Cool customer and obviously very, very talented.
Seen him play in a personal setting at the Jammin' Jave cafe in Franklin TN. as well. Good Times ... heard him do some great Jeff Beck covers with Tom Hemby. I'm going to see pt 2 - thanks a lot !
chester is the man. Ive seen him once with phil and once with genesis. I have the cd to the genesis live in Amsterdam in July and when Chester is introduced he got the biggest cheer of the night.
I went to a drum clinic and saw Chester. As far as I was concerned there were three drummers and one musician, and the musician was Chester. One of the finest drummers I've ever heard.
Gay-drumming just doesn't suit mr. Thompson here..
I also agree with aihoschema, can't compare them..
Though Zappa was probably at his best when playing with Chester.. Excluding of course Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka, in which the great Aynsley Dunbar played so 'widely' and with such versatility. Go check them.. Completely different genre of course..
Collins liked Weather Report, so asked Chester to play live with them, Chester didn't know any Genesis, but Alphonso Johnson loved them, and told Chester he should take them up on the offer.
After playing with the likes of Zappa and Weather report he believed that playing with an "English rock band" would be a walk in the park, but by his own admission he had to go back to school and tighten up.
Chester is a great drummer, but he's no Phil Collins.
phil is better?? haha, Phil is great, i've listened to him plenty times with Brand X, he has some awesome chops, but Chester is one of the BEST, that played for the best and most demanding bands: Zappa, Weather Report, and Genesis' complicated progressive music, and he played it better than phil did, listen to Seconds Out, and I'm sure you'll hear.
well, here is how the story goes from phil. phil was listening to Frank Zappa - "Roxy & Elsewhere" - 1974 Lp which is live, is Chester Thompson & Ralph Humphrey playing side by side together. Phil was amazed how well they played together and heard the blistering drum solo battle on the Lp where they are trading off. So phil had to have him and hired him.
this man and phil collins started me on the road to drums I have been playing for 19 years now and my mouth still drops when I see chester play he is iccredible NO one like him. solid no crap drummer! keep rocking chester!
In an interview (I think it is on the Genesis songbook DVD) Phil said, that he was looking for an american drummer to fill in for him on live shows. Chosing such a skilled drummer tells a lot about Phil's greatness. Can't compare 'em anyway. Phil is a wacky and easygoing drummer. Chester is very disciplined and extremely reliable - never missing any beat with Genesis (including the craziest odd time signatures)
mano que porqueria, quieren ver un baterista de verdad vean a DAve Weckl , Vinnie Colaiuta no es por na pero yo le puedo dar clases a ese senor.. en verdad da lastima .
Chester Thompson is one of a kind. One of the best. I really enjoyed seeing you and Phil play along side each other. Super shows! Hope to see you on the Genesis tour, and get the drum sticks. Seriously, that is what i enjoyed most from the shows. Drums.
he is not Bruford.
