colortoons, Davey and Goliath, that thing that slipped around your ankle and had a ball at the end of a string.
Dr. Max and Mombo was a real class act. Not having kids on the set all the time made it better. Just you, Dr. Max and Mombo and some colortoons. Sorry, but I always liked it better than Floppy, though Duane and Floppy at noon was fun (again, no kids!)
Dr. Max & Mombo were supposed to be the grand marshals of a parade that I and a bunch of other 10-year-olds were in, circa 1970 in Oelwein. We waited and waited for them to show up, and after maybe 45 minutes it was decided we should start without them. Moments after the marching band started playing and all of us kids began parading down the street, Dr. Max & Mombo, having heard the band, came flying out of the Hotel Mealy bar.
@BansheeVomit Dr Max's son used to bowl at Town and Country in Cedar Rapids. My Mom bowled at the same time and we would see Max in the bar or at the snack counter eating. A little kid kept pestering him for an autograph so Max apparently had a few too many and told the kid to " stop pestering me you little F**KER and I'll sign this napkin for you". The little kid ran off and told his dad and next thing you saw was old Dr. Max hiking it up the stairs to leave.
I grew up in Waterloo and Cedar Falls both and I remember Dr Max & Mombo and all the great cartoons he showed. Three Stooges and Davey & Goliath also!! I saw him at Crossroads Mall and he was selling his "Importan Book". He began yelling at the kids and frightened alot of us. I still watched him after that though!!
Around 1967 the Max and the Momb appeared at Whoopee Days in Brighton, Iowa. And I sat right next to Mombo in the local restaurant. He was in full costume. I recall being fascinated by his wedding ring. I guess I didn't believe that clowns could be married.
If you remember Dr Maxx then you remember the Davey and Goliath films he showed? How about The police officer Captain Gardener, the puppet lady Mary Jane from the Humane society? I loved Dr Maxx and Mombo!!
He was a very pleasant man that day. And I can't imagine any parent/teacher/whatever not having a gruff moment here or there. Sorry it ruined an experience, but everyone has a bad day. He probably felt bad about being cranky later too.
I was very little & my grandma was holding me while she & Mom were grocery shopping. My mom turned to her only to see that she was no longer holding me & had a stunned look. When Mom asked where I was, Grandma said a woman just took me. Turns out Dr. Max & Mombo were there, & Mrs. Mombo took me to see them. Thanks, Grandma, for just handing me over, haha! A few years later I saw Dr. Max again somewhere with lots of kids, and we all got photos of the two signed by Dr. Max.
Dr. Max sold the "Important Book" for 50 cents and advertised "Blue Star" potatoe chips because they were the "chippiest chips around"... great kid memories...
My Brownie Troop was on the Dr. Max and Mambo show in May 1981. I remember going to the studio in Cedar Rapids and how cool I thought all of that was.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I left my CR home in 1969, and I cried all the way to Indiana thinking I would NEVER see Dr. Max or Mombo again. Well I returned to Marion in 1974 and they were still there. But it is good to see this! I miss Dr. Max & Mombo almost as much as I do my grandfather. Here is another blast from the past for you all....my grandfather was Conrad Johnson, and he gave me a gift I will never forget, I got my voice from him AND he got me back stage to meet these two men.
Love it that you are Conrad Johnson's grandson. Loved his voice. I grew up in Cedar Falls in the 70s and 80s and watched Dr. Max. I also remember Conrad's voice. Cherish your voice!! (P.S. was Dr. Max a nice man or a fussy old dude? I heard rumors about both Dr. Max AND Mombo)
Conrad Johnson - I haven't heard that name for a long, long time. WMT weather man, right? It'd be cool to see some footage from back then. I'm also trying to find audio from the Open Line or Buy, Sell, or Trade from the late '60s.
Wow - this brings back memories. We grew up in Iowa City and loooooved Dr. Max and Mombo. Our Dad took us to the set one day and we met Dr. Max - I felt like I'd just met a movie star. Do you remember that he used to advertise Dr. Pepper? Something about drinking it at 10 and 2....
I lived in Cedar Rapids all through this shows airing. I watched it every day after school. When I got into my early teens I gained more interest in smoking pot tahn watchiong "kids shows' We were all driving around one afternoon, stoned as usual, and came to an intesection. As we were pulling trough a car coming from the left of us ran the sign and almost plowed into us. Son of a gun, if it wasn't Mombo, all dressed up, driving the car. We almost killed Mombo!
In my neighborhood in Cedar Falls in the mid-sixties you were "the celeb" in kindergarten or first grade if your name was mentioned on the birthday roll call.
I had long since forgotten that I say "Play it safe, be careful" because of this show.
Thank you for posting this! I used to run home from Squaw Creek Elementary so I could watch Dr. Max & Mambo and the other cartoons they played in the afternoon.
Bless your heart for posting this. Dr. Max and Mombo ruled southeast Iowa 1962-1982. Bugs Bunny cartoons. 3 Stooges.Boy Scout troops. Important Books. Both men are gone now. Thank you and tell thousands.
