The strange growing shapes as it warms up are actually chimneys with hotter wax flowing upwards inside the columns. From about 0:13 to 0:16, almost all the wax is either in the column or coming out the top (note that there is very little wax sitting on the bottom).

@ancientbricks lol im just becoming interested in lava lamps and i might get one for my birthday but you just confirmed when i saw the strange growing shapes you were talking about i realized they looked like volcanoes and stuff so i thaught that its like a highway for hot wax and once it reaches the top it cools preventing further growth

My sister has a lava lamp which she hasnt used yet really. How long does it take for the circle thing to start - i'm not very good at maths...

I think mine takes about 30 minutes to start moving, maybe about 45-60 minutes before it's really flowing.
