My Uncle has the 1988 Laser Disc version and I copied into a HF-VHS in 1996, then to wav. file to MP3 in 2004 and it Still sounds AWESOME.
I got the DVD version of this and it sounds like poop. I was so frigging upset. My MP3 version that I did sounds superior than the DVD version which was "re-mastered" LOL
I want a Pioneer LD to play this again. Which is 44k and sounds better than the stupid DVDs
Hope to see a Blue Ray with Original 1988 Laser Disc Sound.
This is some of the sickest performances I've heard these studio cats doing. Really great tune and amazing skills by everyone. Wish music was... well, more like this.
i have a video of this tune played by some grp stars (lee ritenour carlos vega(r.i.p) abraham laboriel and the fantastic larry williams on keys and tenor sax and of course the genius dave valentin)
this video reminds me of my beloved late father..he was a jazz lover and this piece was one of his favourites..love it so much! thanks a lot for posting this!!
I first saw Dave Valentin in 1985 at a Wilshire Blvd theater, Los Angeles and immediately fell in love with his performance energy, his amazing, unbeatable improvisational skills and the beautiful sharp tone of his Yamaha flute. Unfortunately, Daves unique style has changed dramatically since 2005. His once unmistakable flute tone is gone. His unique improvisational power seems now timid and predictable. I hope this change is due to personal choice and not because of a fading ability.
I have to agree with Mauriceandangela, I feel like that is exactly what has happened to Dave's playing. You couldn't have said it better. I agree that he has some how changed his playing style and not for the better. He's some what timid and lacks luster in his improv. Sad!
Yeah..that is like the best live video that I own. GRP live! It is a shame about Carlos. He was a great drummer and the it was the PERFECT combination of musicians on that stage! No doubt!
I have the video on tape! (a copy from the Laser Disc) but I want a DVD.. MAN that Laser Disc sounds superb.... It blew me away the first time I saw it.
You're best bet is to order it. Some time ago I tried to find the Christmas CD of GRP Live and had to order it on line. Forget about finding it in stores...or rather good luck. It's a classic!
mmm..Sorry, I think Dave Grusin wrote Oasis, but I'm not sure!, The credits doesn't say anything about that.. and I couldn't find the answer in google either.
I can inform you guys that this song is written by Bill O'Connell. Bill and Dave valentin did extensive touring together in the 80s. Oasis in one of Bill most requested songs, which is blatantly obvious! It's a great tune:-)
My first youtube comment goes to rodrum and this magnificent video. These cats can play. I have always liked this recording, especially the talent of the late Carlos Vega. He really knew how to play just the right thing for the song. Soooo good! Again, thank You rodrum for putting this video up --- I didn't know it existed:-)
This is too good to be true!! CARLOS VEGA is AMAZING!!!

Could be because of the smooth jazz format, seems to have tamed most contemporary jazz artists.
